Might need your OP desperatly. 51 here, 20 years of grappling. Seasoned blue, crossed my grappling with 25 years of amateur comp boxing and wrestling (freestyle and greco). I fell in love with Prriitt Mihkelson, Dean Lister, Jeff Glover and AG Algarazam full court defensive grappling. If I cant beat a superior grappler, then I'll revert back to my A game, defense. I know its weird, go watch Priitt Mihkelson's seminars to get an idea of how I roll. Am I heading the wrong way or should I just do my thing and call it defense BJJ. I can actually sub 95% of white belts, 70% of blues and 20% of purples. Thanks in advance.

I'm very familiar and a fan of Priit and his teachings. I think there is much to be said for good defense, and I believe in the Carlson Sr. saying "If you cant win, make the opponent pay a steep price for victory". Additionally, as we age (I am mid 40s) we have to balance our rolling style against our longevity and frequency of training. However, if you have safe training partners, then I also recommend opening up to try new things, and risk failure. Concern for win / loss ratio in the gym is not beneficial to overall growth in my opinion. If you haven't followed the page, hit the button because I will soon be doing a video on the importance of variety in your training partners. There is a big difference in rolling to win as opposed to rolling to improve. My question to you is which are you trying to accomplish! First, allow me to commend you for staying the course, and please accept my encouragement to continue forward! As far as rank, my suggestions are the same, build the game that best reflects you! Regarding age, the importance of how we train will often dictate our longevity, especially for those of us who are no longer in our 20's where we were seemingly impervious to father time. Choose the right training partners, keep your nutrition where it helps rather than hinders your health, and enjoy the knowledge that life has taught you, that the youngsters have not yet learn. We didn't make it to 40-50-60 years old by being soft, especially in the era of our youth. Know that your grit will see you through anything, but also be mindful to preserve the longevity of your training. Too heavy on the tools and tradesmen metaphors. Would of preferred to hear it in jiu jitsu terms. Especially because this video is for those who are advancing to their brown belt. Don’t need the metaphors. We understand bjj.

I appreciate the reply! The video is more a roadmap for those people new to jiu-jitsu who are learning about the belt systems. As you stated, those people who have already reached higher ranks (and have the understanding you referenced) don't require such an explanation. Additionally, more experienced practitioners also understand that only their coach can convey the specifics of what he/she is looking for not only in their students, but specifically in an individual student. That was why I chose to speak in the broad scope. That being said, perhaps I should adjust the metaphors to establish a more broad reach! Thanks again

Do purple belts need to compete to make it to brown belt?

At our academy competition is encouraged at least once or twice in your BJJ journey, but not a requirement. Our members will compete against each other and guests day in and day out. My only concern is the constant force of force learning. Whether that is in the academy, other academy's open mats, or tournament competition. I just care about live training and progress.

Never got a stripe on my purple belt. Ive been a purple belt over 5 years. I switched schools been at it almost 2 years 3 or 4 times a week. My heart sank once i realized my professor wasnt gonna give me a stripe for a long time. Yes my feelings are hurt. I feel like im just passing through this school until i move again and im trying to be serious and consistent. I've seen others not as skilled as me getting brown belts especially those that kiss the professors ass. My purple belt is literally dissolving. I just feel discouraged.

Have you spoken to your Professor about this... I know there are many that consider it a taboo, but there are also many who may have their own opinion as to why they have chosen not to promote or who are willing to express what they aren't seeing that would otherwise assist their determination

@@NXG_HQ I’m thinking about it but I also feel like it may upset my professor and I will just get moved to the bottom of the queue. The current plan is to pick up my training regimen and making a concerted effort to start tapping all brown and black belts. Also still trying to stay gentle and rely on technique and not just being a douche at the same time. It’s a fine line to walk though. If no results in 6 months I’ll ask.
