I love this description of the purple. Also another universal one: the white belt is untrained. the blu belt submits 95% of untrained and white bets. the purple belt beats the trained blue belt, and begin to sub purples, and has trained time to sub upperbelts. the brown belt can sub the white, blue, purples and some black belts.

I was promoted to purple in February. While I somewhat expected it I didnt account for the imposter syndrome that accompanied it. I had suffered an injury that required surgeries to recover from. When I talked to my coaches they told me I was already at that level before my injury at 4 stripe blue. That built my confidence to be at this level and to realise what I had been doing as a blue belt was already falling into a role model on the mats.

Beautifully explained man. I’m an older blue belt who trains with a lot of very cool purple belts in our small gym, and definitely the maturity in regards to flow and also knowledge sharing has been something I aspire to.

It makes sense that there is an added responsibility with the purple belt!! It makes sense you’re not coddled as much and not as much hand holding and I feel like that also translates outside of BJJ, that analogy

Appreciate the support, Sam! And I totally agree; I feel that BJJ has so many life lessons. I need to do a life vs. BJJ metaphors video! Haha!

It's crazy how one jump from a belt really takes a lot of hard work. I assume every time you get a belt you just want to continue growing and going higher.
@LifeWithVinceLuu4 жыл бұрын
That's exactly how it is! Usually it's 1.5 to 2 years to get to the next belt level. And that's with you going 4-5 days a week!

Most of our purple belts have more than decent techniques, explosivness and lot of speed, plus they are young. One critical, major issue I see as a long term seasoned grappler is this: besides speed and explosivness, I can compare them to our high level advance blue belts, and THAT is so wrong. For instance, when a purple belts top mounts me, I can easily slow him down, and use my hip to slowly defend and escape and get out. More of em often told me they would stop top mount me, cause I was too strong. Wrong, my defense/escape I got it from Firaz Zahabi online courses, boom ya. Anyway, thank you for taking my comment (venting).

At 3 stripe blue and have a feeling purple will be around the corner but don’t feel ready

I know this is an old comment, I’m curious how your journey is now. I’m on my 4th stripe on my purple belt and when I was first promoted, I didn’t feel ready either. lol

love the blue belt as a adolescent teen analogy! really cool to hear all this; and that a purple can beat a black and he's seen it happen?
@LifeWithVinceLuu4 жыл бұрын
It really is true! They say that a purple belt is basically a black belt though their technique needs to be sharpened a bit more to get to that black belt level!

Great video! What’s typical time from blue belt to purple belt?
@LifeWithVinceLuu3 жыл бұрын
I'm still at blue belt though from others around me, if you go 3-5x per week, it should take you anywhere from 1.5 - 2 years on average?

Oh wow, a really good purple belt can beat a black belt. Impressive stuff. How does the order of belts go again? Why does a purple belt constitute a "professional" label? Thanks for the insight!

I appreciate the question, Daniella! I'll save this question the next time I see Professor Bryant and put this in a BJJ video!
