I've got to say I've only just come across Mr danaher today, as a judo black belt I've been blown away by his astute, precise intelligent answers. He in my mind encapsulates everything you'd want as a coach and sensei. If anyone is interested in judo groundwork can I recommend the great kashiwazaki.

Wasn’t pumped about this vid at first, but JD’s knowledge bombs made it worth watching the whole thing and made me so happy to hear that his teaching philosophy aligns so closely with my own without me even knowing it. The “why” is extremely important in learning systems with infinite number of possibilities.

Im saying this in a serious not joking fashion .... JOHN DANAHER speaks the QUEEN’s English. I hear him dot his i’s & cross his t’s as he speaks. I would love to hear a Christmas novel series during holiday seasons ....a series via John’s incredibly soothing voice. We can get creative with that. I believe as the master instructor you are .... your selling your self short John. I hear your voice as a narrator for film & tv. Nat-Geo .... documentary film...a tv series. The options are endless. I’m still sticking to my guns on my KZbin content for advance & beginners time length. I would promote your god given power of articulation for the world 🌎 to enjoy. Not just this grappling series.

judo practitioner /historian of martial arts here. ultra fast short background. Judo is Ju-jutsu + a particular methodology of training developed by Kano (this methodology is the regular method of training you see today in bjj , judo and sambo) . Todays judo , isn't actually judo but shiai ,sport form of judo, basically a watered down , no atemi (no striking) and "safer" version of judo. this version of judo has different rules, which have been changing for a long long time, and basically it has one goal => MONEY. YES, MONEY. how does the IJF get the money? sponsors. Shown where ? TV .people watch the world cups , grand prix and other competitions. The IJF learned through the ratings, that people don't like certain techniques, and situations. For example, ground game. People would rather watch huge throws into the air than submissions. That's why they cut the amount of time on the ground, they added the "always be working towards submission" rule, which means if you stop pursuing the submission or pin by any reason, after 20 seconds, they WILL stand you up. They also banned leg grabbing throws back in 2010 , because statistically people will be more aware of counter throws(leg grabbing throws such as single leg, double leg are best used as counter throws, as those are very high risk while attacking, but very effective while countering) which would make the occurrence of "beauty throws (those who people like to see happening)" go down a bit (not good for ratings). So basically it is always about money. Ohh, and the gis? they change them after a while, so you to buy new ones, keep the sponsors wheel turning

To be honest I think the flying submissions probably are dangerous and Danaher himself has said he does not allow his students to just dump their weight in an uncontrolled manner. Hence no jumping guard etc.

I think helping people see the "Why?", is very important! I also believe John uses formal names for things like "Ashi Garami". Goes back to japanese jui jitsu and speaks of it in a system. System thinking is very helpful, that brings order. These things will help logical thinkers to follow the path paved and push those other types of learning to search the terminology. This cascade effect of knowledge, raises the grappling potential! Keep in mind John Danaher went to Columbia University, so he is an intellectual...

IJF is soon to ban everything but uchimata and seoi nage. Screw them. What Judo needs is a clear distinction beetween the sport and martial art, or a major shift in the positions the blockheads leading the organisazion currently own. Bring back the leg grabs, extend the newaza work time, let Judo grow and develop, and if that means falling out of Olympics, well - it's their loss.

The IJF banning flying submissions? Sigh! Ever since BJJ (and MMA) became popular, the have done everything possible to distance themselves from this sister style. Not that the Gracies haven't done the exact same thing in reverse, but it's just silly. Back in the 80s and early 90s, you had more like 10-20 seconds on the ground in Judo, and if you where getting somewhere, they let you keep going. And I still cannot get used to this terminology. Almost every other school of Jiu jitsu around the world is classical self defense, in the meaning of training fixed attack/defense techniques in pre-defined steps. Except of course Brazilian Jiu jitsu which is practiced with full force sparring/rolling at every pass, just like Judo. Wouldn't it have been easier if you just called it Brazilian Judo instead, because my head is spinning around? :) Anyway thanks for a good show. I had never really thought about that juji gatame was specific to Japan. I remember having seen some drawings from France and England from the 19th century, but was probably from some very early jiujitsu/judo schools, because they were wearing a gi.

Judo comes from Japaneese Jiu Jitsu, Kano just adopted its stand up
@MeroGrumble
@MeroGrumble 5 жыл бұрын
@@oreocarlton3343 Judo also has ground techniques. Jujigatame was not invented in Rio, neither the triangle choke (existed in the 20's, spread in Western judo and BJJ in the 70's), neither the "Ezekiel" (80's). Not even the "gogoplata", ankle locks, "X-guard", "De la Riva", "rubber guard"-like techniques etc. *You can see all of them demonstrated in old judo books or black and white footages* . *All of this is judo. Long after its creation, the "olympification" of the art removed them from today common training and competitions* . Plus, jujutsu (Japanese goes without saying) is an umbrella word, just like "grappling". There were hundreds of jujutsu schools in Japan, Jigoro Kano formally trained two of them and learned from some other, which then led to the development of Judo and its offshoot, BJJ. Have a good roll.

@@MeroGrumble so there are old mentions of the triangle?
@MeroGrumble
@MeroGrumble 5 жыл бұрын
@@oreocarlton3343 Yes, you find mention of the triangle choke in judo in the 1920's, though everything new is often old in grappling and I would be surprised if it did not existed before that under one form or another. But it became common in judo only around this time. If you are interested, *you can find a good summary on the Valente brothers' blog* entitled "the Origin of the triangle choke" explaining why Maeda did not teach the triangle choke in Brazil. I quote a part of this article from a BJJ source in support of my reply to your first message :) : " _In Maeda’s time at the Kodokan there were no shortage of ne waza experts to train with_ ." (ne waza means ground technique) Also, among a long list of judo books, you might want to have a look at "ma méthode de judo" (My method of judo) by Kawaishi, a judoka who trained in the 1920's, showing a lot of ground submissions looking pretty familiar in BJJ and rare or totally forbidden in today judo (leg locks, neck crancks, gogoplata, legs scissor choke etc)

Now before you keyboard warriors attack me I’m recommending that for advanced grapplers it’s a snooze 💤 fest. I totally agree on it for less advanced players. I would separate the video content for advanced & beginners & option it. My KZbin span for me to click on a techniques 5:00 minutes or less. John ..... sorry but your content is too long. I have watched some a master at your craft but for video reason .... shorten the god forsaken talking please.
