Brian congrats to your success. I remember you from class when you were about 14-16 years old back at the old academy for two years when you were starting to get your rep for your triangles. Rener, you and your brother are awesome instructors. I learned a lot and had I not moved, would have stayed with it. Stay safe and healthy in L.A!

I'm 46 and proud to have joined the Gracie University family of students. I am learning so much. It's crazy how much stuff is clicking left and right. Watching is one thing, doing is another. For Rener and Ryron to have so much respect from some of the best fighters and practitioners in the world is a testament to the quality of instruction that I am receiving. Obrigado.

Great stuff!... I've not been back to JJ since injuring my back... However I train through the Gracie University every morning (solo though unfortunately - at 53). I want to move closer to a CTC... the nearest one to me is 200 miles, and there are no Garages where I live... and I don't have a garage, otherwise I'd start one :) ;) I train on the kitchen floor in about 3ft of space :). When I watch these type of videos they make me feel I can do it.... as well as feel part of "the GJJ family" :)
@DigitalNomadInvestor4 жыл бұрын
Best advice for a white belt? Expect to feel lost and overwhelmed the first 1-4 months when you start training. But you will start to "get it" when the flow of instruction starts to feel okay. No matter what, stick with it.
@dimaokolovych11884 жыл бұрын
You will feel lost and overwhelmed if you are being taught incorrectly and being asked to process things the context of which you do not understand. The best way to lose a student. 90% of bjj schools do exactly that.

@@King-Fasi Rener and Ryron were my instructors at The Gracie Academy in L.A. for two years. Brian Ortega, the guy in this video, and I were in the same class. So I knew him as a fellow student (but not personally). He was in his mid-teens back then. I only rolled with him once from what I can remember. He was nice but a shy kid back then. Rener took Brian under his wing and really helped him and looked after his development. The Gracies get a bad rap but they are incredible instructors and as accomplished as they are, I never felt any ego from Rener, Ryron, or their dad, Rorion. The people who badmouth them don't know the and never trained at their academy. I did for two years. They are passionate about JJ and instilled in us that we are only as good as is our ability to help the person we are rolling with. I was an older student and they made me feel like one of family there. How passionate they are in their YT videos is not an act, they are 100% legit. I highly recommend to anyone interested in JJ to check out their academy!
@DigitalNomadInvestor4 жыл бұрын
@@dimaokolovych1188 I get what you are saying, but JJ is like chess, and you don't learn chess in one month and that is what I mean by my statement. Each JJ move is 3-6 steps, so it's difficult to learn the muscle memory all at once and it takes a lot of training. That's why getting a black belt in JJ is so long. Boxing is like checkers and you can learn it quicker. I say this from experience in both (I train in boxing and Muay Thai now in Thailand) but I trained at The Gracie Academy for two years). I checked out a number of martial arts places before I chose The Gracie Academy. Their instruction is incredible.

Being the smallest guy in class (130 lbs), I feel lost and got smashed by everybody for the first 6 months or more before finally learn to improve my game by tying it all together and knowing which move work or not work for me. So yeah, BJJ has a steep learning curve man
@DigitalNomadInvestor4 жыл бұрын
@@oa7274 Rener always told us to try and roll with guys bigger than ourselves because in a street fight where you have to defend yourself, it will usually be a bigger guy who is the aggressor against you. So, it's good practice. It's good that you stuck with it.

Interesting comment regarding older students...I began at my CTC when I was 59 and I am still there going on 61...I often think of how it would be if started 20 years ago...then I remember the best day to plant a tree would have been 20 years ago..the second best day is today!!! I love training and will continue as long as my journey will allow...

What a great video. I'm still shocked how many people questioned Brian, not just as a fighter, also as a human before his fight with Zombie. I know the slap, but there were also things before from TKZ. Brian is just such nice and humble guy and Rener is probably his best possible coach.
@falufalump4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it's shocking, given that Rener's philosophy and business is built, ostensibly, on anti-bullying. It appeared that Ortega was bullying some random TKZ affiliated person that he knew he had physical advantages over. He physically assaulted him. That's anti-thesis to everything his school and mentor espouse.

As a 45 year old white belt the question about staying motivated was great although I get frustrated with my progress at times I had to take on the mentality that there's winning and learning in BJJ and I've been doing a metric ton of learning since I've started about 7 months ago and if I'm learning then it's worth it. Life is about learning and in doing BJJ I'm learning so much not just about the art of BJJ but I'm learning a lot about myself and it's been a blast
