This man didn’t just help the police officer, he helped the suspect that was resisting. This could have escalated to the point where the suspect was either shot by police. Or as he was attempting to steal the officer’s gun, he could have ended committing more serious crimes and never getting out of jail. This act of courage isn’t so simple as helping the cop only. His actions rippled out and helped both men, other officers who may have arrived later, innocent bystanders and the families of both men. He deserves some serious appreciation.

My son in Saint George, Utah had the same experience. He was driving along noticed on the side of the road a police officer struggling with a man. Shane could tell he the police officer was exhausted and not winning the battle. He pulled his car over jumped out and put the convict in a choke hold and told him to stop resisting. After they got him cuffed the police officer said in a breathless voice “thank you, I thought for sure I was going to lose him. Shane got in his car and left. Let’s look out for each other!

I actually helped an officer with a subject years ago when I was a young man. The first thing to remember is to declare yourself as a friend and ask if he needs help. The officer I helped is still a good friend of mine. We found out later the guy was running because he was suspected of possessing child porn. I probably would have been more "help" had I known.

This is an amazing video and a great job by both the police officer and the BJJ student. I want to take a second to tell the Gracie's that I was able to take six weeks of classes while visitng Las Vegas a couple years ago and even though I was a very seasoned Judo B.B. I learned so much during that training and had the time of my life while doing so. I earned my first white strip in BJJ and it was as exciting to me as when I got my first degree black belt in Judo. I previously worked with the disabled. We were trained on how to restrain a person without them hurting you or themselves. (Legally, if we did something incorrectly we were subject to arrest.) It seems somehow this training has been deleted from the police.I have seen over and over police try to cuff someone that would literally tear their shoulder cuff so of course they resist. Who wouldn't! My nephew was a state trooper for 20 years and said he had this training. But most of the new cops were all military and were like their own gang. Their word was law even though they knew little about the law itself. He retired early because he feared he would get caught in a 'George Floyd' moment or one of them would think he was an informant and he would have Serpico moment. This is what the police in the US have become.

I started BJJ ABOUT 10 months ago. I only get a chance to go about once a week but I love it. A few months back in a gas station and a patron came in with what seemed to be some mental health issues. After threatening to kill the gas station attendant I was able to get their attention on me. They slapped me in the face but I immediately took them down and subdued them until the cops came without ever striking or hurting the individual. I was calm the entire time. BJJ definitely gave me the skills to handle the situation with a calm head.

As an older student (57) and been to several different gyms, I would recommend Gracie schools by far for the structure and technical applications. Trained with multiple law enforcement bjj practitioners and it's such an integral part of engagement without the need for deadly force in many cases.

Never a waste. I did Hapkido years ago, learning circles and proper falling technique. Years later I was chasing my dog around the yard, decided to take a shortcut and hop over the deck railing, caught my toe lost balance and instead of a collarbone breaking fall I auto-magically smoothly rolled straight into running position and caught Frisky! No thought involved, it happened too fast…just automatic response from training. Wish it was on camera, I checked and can’t spin webbing from my wrists…yet!

The officer had no backup and was trying to put a very strong man who was probably on drugs into handcuffs behind his back. No matter how good of training any one person or officer might have, putting a very strong man into handcuffs behind their back can be impossible without help. Trying to put a very strong man into handcuffs behind their back while wearing a police belt with a gun attached makes it even harder when that same person is trying to take control of that gun.

If the roles were reverse, that citizen, even with MMA training, would of probably needed assistance too. A cop has to position him/herself to maintain weapon control. When I trained BJJ we had a few officers that trained with us.. they had very little knowledge of ground control. It amazed me that they didn't know much. Even with muscles and strength they struggled. They need to implement BJJ training with all officers worldwide. Not only does it help physically.. but it helps most importantly.. mentally.

"I don't know how to safely operate this machine, I might get my armed ripped off." "Welp, guess you're gonna die then." If USA's rich people required or experienced police interventions from random street officers more often, you can bet the police would be better prepared. Instead, officers are allowed to screw up, risking themselves and inflicting harm unnecessarily, but departments (often bad officers themselves) pay no cost for that because of qualified immunity. If the real costs of bad performance was being paid not by the community and police families, but by police departments, it'd turn out it's actually cheaper to train officers properly.
