@lolcano234 I agree. I can understand from a legal standpoint. If a sexual thought pops in your head in the moment just move on and keep rolling. It is what it is. We have a couple women in our gym that compete a lot. If men didn’t roll with them they wouldn’t improve as quickly as they do. Just because I roll with a woman in my gym doesn’t mean I’m going to have an affair with her.

I go to the gym to focus on training and to "solve mental puzzles", why add an extra dimension of stress unnecessarily? Do you realize that there's a reason why most companies have dress codes? But yeah, it sounds like you're the first human to transcend your own biology. Most of us aren't on your level yet. Even Jesus and Buddha wouldn't be caught up rolling with women, but some new age male feminist like yourself obviously has more wisdom than both of them.

@lolcano234 Perhaps your point is not invalid but it is a form of fallacious reasoning. Being uncomfortable with rolling with women because of a potential sexual attraction and refusing to do so is in fact different than being uncomfortable with rolling with someone because they are simply better at jiu jitsu than you. Obviously, the latter could directly limit your development. As for your argument about learning more rolling with women: I have absolutely no idea why you would believe a female might be the "best person" to learn from. There are plenty of people to learn from and omitting women from that list is very unlikely to hurt your game.

Can we talk for a second about how it takes a lot of courage to admit and be open about this? For a man to say that you can't roll with women because you're self aware enough to recognize that part of you has impure intentions is not easy, and the more we can open this conversation, the easier it is for males to open up about other uncomfortable topics on the subject that we tend to just hold in, which is unhealthy.

Impure intentions? What a poor level of self control you have. Not rolling with women, because they are women, is sexist. And trust me, I'm usually calling out people for overreacting but here you put your female students at a clear disadvantage. People who get offended when someone doesn't want to roll with women might want to ask themselves why there are separate changing rooms and showers. Personally, I'm okay with rolling with women, but at my old gym we used to all change together too and no one seemed to care either way. There is a difference between having thoughts and acting on those thoughts. If a man has trouble with acting on certain sexual thougts, or if he wants to avoid the dilemma as a whole, then it's probably a good thing he avoids rolling with women. However, it's very important for women to roll with men. The majority of women practitioners are looking to be able to defend themselves against men. If you don't give them that opportunity, then you might be doing them a disservice if and when the time comes for them to apply their skills in real life.

You will never understand this concept because you’re an atheist so if you don’t agree with me then what can I do? Go live your life and I will live mine. And there’s nothing wrong with not wanting to roll with women. Women who feel uncomfortable rolling with men are always given the option to instead roll with other women. So I don’t see why when religious people don’t want to roll with women because they are uncomfortable you make a big fuss. Also it’s your coach’s gym yes?? So he can do whatever he wants, so I don’t give a shit if he kicks out people. It’s his gym. Why would I care.

How can women effectively practice self defense against half the human population (men), who are just physically stronger and bigger then them? Unless you're used to practicing with people who are big and strong, you're going to be suprise when you have to use BJJ for self defense against a bigger and stronger men.

As a progressive person, I want to end the culture that martial arts is only for men. At the end of the day, it's intention. Why are you there everyday at the gym? Are you there to work? Perhaps it would be creepier is Firas decided to roll with women knowing he had these inclinations. I don't think he's trying to force this perspective on everybody. I wasn’t comfortable when I first started, simply because I wasn’t confident controlling my weight (250). Now it’s honestly not a big deal at all. I just usually play guard, or focus on different passing I usually don’t try. I can recognize a girl is attractive and not have it ruin my training. I also don’t assume she wants to fuck me either. I’m honestly there to train, I’m not really in that mindset. I’m sure most women feel the same, I can respect anyone’s decision to not roll with anyone but the mocking/patronizing tone is weird on this one coach. And I say that with much respect. Sometimes my classes only have one woman in them. If we all thought like that she wouldn’t be able to train. And everyone at the academy has a right to train.

I couldn't agree more with everything you said. It's also disturbing seeing people defend their reasoning saying 'I just dont want to be tempted to do anything'. It really shouldn't be hard to not sexually harrass someone. What do people even think is going to happen if they roll with someone they think is attractive? That she's gonna get pregnant? I also feel like a coach should train with all his students in order to understand them and help them improve.

@@Wenutz sure. And again I can understand a lot of reasons for not wanting to roll with someone. Risk of injury, hygiene, etc. But the one in video doesn’t hold much merit for me. I’m a young guy, I get what coach is trying to say. But I’m also an adult. I’m not trying to be some “angelic” person because I can recognize I’m at my academy to train, not hunt for pussy. And I know women would benefit more from training with other women. But its not an option for a lot of women who train. We’re teammates. I’ve learned from higher level women.

finally someone with some sense and basic manners. it just shows how immature he is and how he excessively objectives women. So much so, that he can't see them as humans, as students, as doughters or mothers that are coming to his classes to train and to learn to defend themselves. He can only see them as possible sexpartners. The moment he touches them the last bit of decency would melt away. What an animal. This attitude is a disgrace. Especially to someone in the position of a teacher.

Coach, what is your advice for women who train BJJ for self-defense (in particular against male attackers), but they can't experience the strength disparity in training when men wouldn't roll with them¿ How could they prepare¿ I'm not suggesting you have the responsibility to roll with them, I think everybody has the right to refuse to roll with anyone they don't want to roll with, regardless of the reason. But this would be an important question, in particular as BJJ was designed for self-defense.

This is a great question, most women are training BJJ not to hook up with guys on the mat and ruin families but to learn self defense. The great thing about BJJ is it can be pressure tested but how can they the training they need with coaches view points towards women?

Today BJJ has become more and more a sport and less and less a martial art, like judo. It doesn't make sense any more speaking about self defense today. Women has to train with other women because at competitions they fight each other. Your point is useless.

reasons to not roll with woman : if men dont want to ,thats a reason good enough : lawsuit; if one day a girl filled a case of sexual harrasement stating that the man tried to be harrasive during rolling, that is the end of your fucking reputation and trust. : there are really high level women that can roll with other woman and they can improve. : religion ; leave those guys alone if rolling wit you hurt their sentiments. :i know men who have wives who doesnt like rolling with other women, why make them suffer. : most gentlemen are hammered from childhood not to hurt woman and be gentle with them; let them be old fasioned : some men dont have enough control; just let them be when they accept that fact and are trying to move forward. what we want and we dont want is our fucking choice let men roll with who ever the fuck they wanna roll with..... why is that so hard to understand...

The scenarios are different. As a heterosexual male I wouldn't even know if the guy I'm rolling is gay unless he told me. The one who has to decide whether he can handle the sexual tensions would be the gay dude since there would be no tension on my end (pause). On the other hand if I'm rolling with an attractive woman I'd have to deal with unwanted sexual tensions when my mind should be on the grappling. I'd be grappling with my own biology as well which adds unnecessary stress.

Gay guys are guys. Tbh rolling with women you have you not use certain parts of the body (near the chest or butt even if you go for an upper c leg take down) the upper c single leg take down gets pretty close to the forbidden area and some might not feel comfortable with that. However, having rolled with gay guys they don't care about any of that they are too busy trying to choke me out lol

Very true. Usually it's not an issue until a super hot girl comes to class. One time this happened in our academy, and our guys could hardly take their eyes off of her to be honest... even the professors. At my previous academy, they would even ask students not to start a relationship with a new girl unless they are serious. I agree with that too because I have seen problems at academies when guys start a relationship with the hot new girl... specially, when it's a coach.

Wow I'm really surprised at this take, coach. I can honestly say that I don't have any sexual thoughts rolling with women. I'm not asexual but I leave that at the door. Doesn't make me "angelic". edit: Just to clarify, given the responses: there are moments, on occasion, where the girl is hot and/or the position suggestive, that trigger a notion of sexuality/eroticism. However, that is a far cry from "an impure thought" as Firas puts it. When these moments occur, I block it out and resume the jiu jitsu. I am not having sexual fantasies on the mat.

@Zoot jitsu Notice how you have to push the definition to make your case. The girls in our gym are average, and I roll gi only (got my blue just before covid hit). But besides that, my mind is on jiu jitsu. Unless you're in mount, side control etc. things move fast and you're constantly reacting. How do you even have time for sexual thoughts? It's weird to me that your mind would go there given the preoccupation. There is plenty of time for that stuff outside of actual rolling. In fact, I think people who are besieged by those thoughts must not be around women much outside of bjj.

If you roll with the other sex or not is a very personal and legitimate decision. You should not roll with a wouman if you think that you cannot resist the temptation to put your hands where they shouldn't be. Female grapplers quickly develop a sense to distinguish if a touch was accidental, required by a technique or intentional and driven by what he calls "impure thoughts". This is good because it removes the discomfort if you accidently happen to touch a "suspicious" body part. However, if you have a problem with getting submitted by a female grappler, do not roll with women because you will apply brute force if necessary which increases the risk of getting injured or to injure your training partner. And at last, you may need to avoid certain techniques depending on each individual. Some women's breasts are more sensible at certain times and it wouldn't be nice to put your shin across them for a knee shield or scissor sweep. More advanced female grapplers are often very technical and rolling with them can be very rewarding. But the most important thing: Do not be offended if your request for a role is turned down by someone of the opposite sex.
