Maia is such a wizard on the ground in MMA. Very inspirational video. I respect Eddie Bravo's bottom game, and his approach, but you HAVE to be on top in a real fight to be successful....And Maia is on another level. Maybe someone will combine these styles one day into a truly effective ground fighting style. Great vid as usual.

How effective do you think Demian Maia's blend of passing styles would be in sport BJJ?
@BJJSCOUT
@BJJSCOUT 8 жыл бұрын
hmm, well he is tripoding for a reason, its MMA, you can;t stand back in sport cause there will be an immediate stand up while in sport the guarder will stay down as he knows you must engage and get penalized. in sport he would probably pick either the 100% Faria (tripod) or 100% Lo (posting) elements of his blend, cause in sport u can keep your hands low to reach for his legs with no fear of strikes (ie you can hunt for 5 mins with your hands down, eventually you could secure something). I think the better qn is how would maia's mind fare in the modern sport world now - I see a really intelligent mind behind his mma grappling "design" so I have faith that he would pick a good strategy to counter what you see today. I think bjj gets more mental at the higher level tbh and not so much will this "style" beat that "Style"

First, this is an amazing breakdown. Still amazing in 2020. However, it seems like you're ignoring the arm post when he is in position #3 (tripod over half butterfly). In almost every instance, Maia has posted his hand on the "short" side of the tripod (i.e. the side that is pinning opponent's leg). Could you provide some context on this choice? EDIT: Uh . . . never mind. I just got to the "active posting" part of the video, lol.

Is Maia potentially vulnerable to a leg attack while he's tripodding like that? For example, at 4:37 could the bottom guy not switch to Single Leg X guard?

Head position.
@joeyripswell
@joeyripswell 6 жыл бұрын
Samuel Son- if they were to latch on to a submission, of any kind really, there is an escape or submission defense available for him to use. Once he is out of the attempt, he would be able to improve his position immediately. We find this out somewhere around 6 months of bjj sparing. Your defense becomes better and the opportunity to act offensively appears. Then you try for it, and find yourself flat on your back on bottom of side control. Sometimes in mma you see people jump guard and rip off a guillotine, and ya thats bad head position. Demian does not do bad position
@ShinDenn

Isn't Hand posting (like in 6:14) Vs Butterfly dangerous? I'm talking about Marcellos style reverse armbar/straight armbar! that was my former teacher specialty: unballanced you with butterfly --> you put an Hand to the Mat --> reverse Armbar. slow exemple here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fYuvdaeNitKmpMk Ps: I love Maia, I'm so happy you're doing this serie, I'd watch his fight against LaFlare again and again, when you see a guy doing the same passing strategie straight to mount as will in every 5 round you know there's something big here!
@BJJSCOUT
@BJJSCOUT 8 жыл бұрын
well the same reason why situp sweeps, X guard, SLX etc are hard, his head is pushing into your chest, if he feels its coming up, he pins you down again, it's basically one big exercise in posture control of the guarder. thank you for the kind words, hope u found the vids useful

Hey excellent analysis. Can you slow down a bit for us old timers please. Im trying to read, understand, digest before next one comes up so fast. I have seen this tripod in action and even try defending/attacking (bjj) it but its so hopeless. But when i try it the bottom guy pulls DHG deep half guard. Whats the solution to that? Damian can do this i think because mma fighters dont maybe want DHG, do they? Even if you do you probably dont want to spend too much time there as you will get rain of hammer fists. Last note. I will try this, but my preference to date is go in low with head pressure getting undercooks/cross face control.

to what extent does maias philosophy of "spreading the weight" contradict the catchwrestling principle of always being heavy on your opponent and making him carry weight? And whats preferable/what are the (dis)advangtes of each?
@BJJSCOUT
@BJJSCOUT 8 жыл бұрын
well when u want to pin , all u need to do is be heavy for a few secs, it makes sense to be heavy. But if u want to keep top position , u need something more energy efficient - active posting/base spreading help u do this for long periods
