I agree Ian. I think he's also not given enough credit for starting the modern forehand and many other concepts like "being a tennis superstar". He was a very calm and classy thinker during the games. Human memory is very short, and some of these greats are not remembered as much as they should be.

untouchable on a tennis court. I NEVER saw a player get in his head...not once. And there were some "clowns" in Borg's day, that tried (Nastase, Connors, Tiriac, Eddie Dibbs) He is the only guy I ever saw, whose footwork was so flawless, I swear, it looked like he was floating on air. His speed was just SICK..and to this day, I STILL believe he was faster than Michael Chang.

Love your message. Borg got upset because Mcenroe started to beat him. But Mcenroe didn't have the discipline Borg did and he never won another major after 1984. If Borg would have hung around he would have taken back the number 1 spot and easily won more grand slams. Borg should have won at least 15 or 16.

Bjorn Rune Borg: The Grand GOAT. Youngest player in history to win 11 grand slams. Highest grand slam win %. Only player in history to win the “channel slam” 3 years in a row (Wimbledon & the French Open, 1978-79-80). Only player to fuse these THREE diverse sports into tennis: Ping Pong/forehand; Hockey slap shot/backhand; Skating/Quicksilver movement on the court. Resting pulse rate of 38 bpm when young. Unshakable resolve and ability to reach and hold the Alpha relaxed concentration brainwave state. Although burnout did play a key part in his much-needed 6 month break from tennis in late 1981 into spring 1982, the REAL reason he retired early was DIRTY POLITICS: Borg was forced out of the sport by the “players council” in 1982, which, because Borg had missed the first four months of tournaments in 1982 to recharge and get his energy and passion back, they refused Borg’s request to play a reduced schedule in ‘82 (due to his missing the first third of that year) and instead insisted that he play a full 12 months of tournaments in 8-or they’d force him to QUALIFY for the same grand slam tournaments he’d either won or was a finalist in just the year before (1981). THIS is the true and seldom told story of how dirty politics cut short the stellar career of Bjorn Borg.

Borg won French Opens at about the same rate that Nadal did until he retired. Obviously the tennis was different in Borg's time, because of the differences in the racquets and strings. So it's difficult to compare Borg and Nadal as clay courters. But they have common assets -- both very fast (McEnroe has said that Borg was the fastest guy he ever played), very fit and extremely competitive. Borg probably had the better serve. Nadal volleys better. Which brings me to Borg's achievement of winning 6 French and 5 Wimbledon titles. The grass at the All England Club was changed in 2002. The 'new' grass is much slower and the ball bounces higher. The result is that Wimbledon has become yet another place where ground-strokes are the primary weapon. The serve-volley game that made so many of great players of the 50s, 60s, , etc. successful at Wimbledon is now obsolete. Pete Sampras would not have been nearly as successful at Wimbledon in today's conditions as he was in the 1990s, in my opinion. John McEnroe's one-grip ground-strokes and fabulous volleying also would be smothered at Wimbledon by the great players of today -- Djokovic, Federer, etc. But Borg somehow took that great clay-court game and made it work on the old grass at Wimbledon. He did it by flattening his serve and going into the net, even though he was not a great volleyer. That plus his foot-speed and endurance enabled him to be a 5-time Wimbledon champion with a game that on paper would not have been expected to work on traditional grass. He did this when the gap between the French and Wimbledon was only two weeks. I think Borg's record at those two tournaments is one of the great achievements in the history of tennis. And if tennis continues to be played as it is today, we'll never see such a thing again.

I loved watching Bjorn play. The matches with McEnroe were classic games. I am the same age and I had the same Fila tennis shirts when he played. He did retired very young. I bet if there were sports psychologist and if he had a bit more privacy he would had played into his 30’s. Bjorn’s era had more rallies like in today’s woman’s tennis because of the wood rackets and the early metal rackets the men used and it was more interesting to watch. Todays tennis is just faster with shorter rallies.

The gentleman Mr Borg is a person whom I saw as the lead to be my best at that time I saw and began tennis to my sport of choice if i had autonomy to choose. The hunger then an addition of foods and the way hydration reacts with diet is the way to settle to a persons choice. for me it may be to be better player but another to win and another to think better and conqueror who she / he is internally and perhaps decide from there . at nearly 60 years I like me not to be a person that says here it is eat that but after this time i say hmmm i found i commited and at that time it is a good answer but the the last set comitmnet was not an answer that i needed. perhaps tennis is my way of lif/e interpretation , learning, and at 60 i hope to continue to equalise my mind and be adapataple and a tr=eam player , relationships? easir when the femine has respect in my mind
