Borg moved gracefully and stealthily - like a panther - on the court

Like a superhuman - especially on grass & clay courts. Borg uncoiled his powerful forehand/two-fisted back hand topspin groundstrokes, that totally revolutionized the game of tennis forever.

The King forever The Viking.

incredibly classic match. it was slightly before my time, but Borg-Mac is so classic.

Phew ! I'm glad Borg won that. What an awful moment in that tiebreak to have penalty points awarded against him to McEnroe. I'd have been furious! The umpire clearly made a mistake in calling that forehand passing shot out .

@speedoflite1. And Vilas as well because both he and Borg introduced the heavy topspin style from the baseline! Before they came onto the men's pro tour (Vilas 4 years earlier- in 1969 - than Borg in 1973), players hit the ball flat or with moderate topspin on the forehand and mostly underspin on the backhand.

McEnroe admitted he missed Borg after he retired. Borg was the only one who could make him look silly at the net. Borg was the only one who could elevate his game.

at 1:29:34 mcenroe giving away a point to borg on purpose because he knew that serve was good and the umpire overruled and called it out, this umpire seemed to have a vendetta against borg, he probably cost borg winning this match in straight sets, in the 2nd set tie break with his overule that should have given borg the 4-3 lead in the tiebreak

Neither Borg nor McEnroe offered a handshake to chair umpire after the match was completed. Imagine one of the Williams sisters , Coco Gauff , or Naomi Osaka doing that today ? I'm sure the curmudgeonly stalwart " keep tennis the way it was," tennis fan fringe would be really riled up.

Borg's argument here was an indication I think of how much McEnroe had started to get into his head.
@openlotus95582 жыл бұрын
No. Borg argued because he felt he was robbed of the US Open a few months earlier vs McEnroe on a bad line call at 3 all in the 5th set. It cost him a chance at the Grand Slam. He was still thinking about it 3 months later at the Masters. Also a sign that Borg was beginning to fall out of love with tennis.
@JD-jc8gp2 жыл бұрын
@@openlotus9558 And Borg was falling out of love with tennis for a long time before the 1980 US Open. There's documentary footage of Borg in autumn 1978 where he looks very weary and tired of traveling. After winning the 1979 Wimbledon, he said he was tired of touring. Borg also said something interesting later about his state of mind after winning the 1980 Wimbledon, saying he was relieved right after the final match that he didn't have to play anymore. So even when he was winning he was feeling burned out. Borg also hinted on numerous occasions that if he had won the grand slam in 1980 he would have retired right there, so he must have really pushed himself to continue playing until early 1983.
@Picus132 ай бұрын
From the end of 1979 to the Masters at 81 Borg record against Mac was 5-1, after that Borg had already lost interest in Tennis, he only played 9 tournaments in 1981, he didn’t care about Mac or anything related with Tennis.
