It's actually correct Bjørn, new tires equals more consumption. It's called stepping, think as if each lamella on tires is a step. When oem's meassure consumption it's normal to use worn out or grinded down tires.

Wish there were a tire-noise test, e.g: Same car, same wheel size and rims, but different brands to check the various noise levels. As a EV owner the tires makes a huge difference, but it is impossible to find credible tests (controlled) to range the tires from noise. The best I can find are databases that states "this is a silent / noisy tires". It provides little help for the end user when there is no test. Comfort is important, and I am willing to sacrifise a bit of range and safety for better noise reduction.

There are EU-marks for EU-tested tires. It says consumption, breaking in wet environment, and tire-noise. Hakkapeliitta R3 was 72dB.

@@GeckoClever Oh? Do all tires have this? And is there a database page to see all tires? Thanks
@pompiuses2 жыл бұрын
@@GeckoClever The EU tire noise measurement is only meant for noise outside the car (for pedestrians), not inside the car. These are two very different things. Tires that have a soft compound often makes less noise inside the car, but more noise outside the car.

@@TheVeryEnd87 it is pass by noise in dB. If it is transferrable into the coupe of the car is a different story. On the R3 the pitch on my 20'' wheels changes depending on speed. I don't consider myself very sensitive to noise (stereo is playing quite loud most of the time).
@cliff43772 жыл бұрын
well, I can say for sure if you care about noise, never ever run r-series tires. lol
@ObserverDingue2 жыл бұрын
The tyre model is "R5 EV". This is good marketing by Nokian, because noise is more noticeable for EV drivers than fossil drivers. As you've said the kind of noise is relevant too, the kind of sound frequency, so perhaps the noise reduction will be noticeable for all drivers (just more so with EVs). The R5s are designed for "electric cars, crossovers and SUVs" so other improvements over the R3, like maybe wet road handling, would be relevant for all heavy cars. My Michelin winter tyres (not "Nordic") for my fossil van are rated as 71dB on the EU label (there's no EU label available yet for the R5s). The Nokian R3 EU label rating for noise is 73dB. Do you know how this standardised test is conducted? Presumably it's desgned so as not to include engine noise.

I wonder if this would also be good and a PHEV ? Also will they have the r5 in smaller sizes? like a 215/55 17" or 215/45 17"?

Yes they will, I'm a Nokian resaler and a fan of Nokian for more than 10 years but I tested that Nokian is not anymore a good tire in deep snow. Michelin xice snow and north 4 have way more grip in real snowee conditions (Québec, Vermont and Ontario road trips ) Michelin tested and R3 and hakka 10 studded and also hakka 9 not a Nokian fan anymore. Sorry Nokian. My new WRX will have 2 sets of wheels and tire ready one with Xice snow and the other with north4 studded for hard driving on my sundays gaz fuelling trips lake Champlain. For the Tesla the tires to go 100% is continental vikings 7 or Michelin confort, millage, noise, grip. Tires is a subjective thing, the reputation tends to make your opinion and a good saler is the one who can sale a freezer to an Inuit without lying. I'm a pretty damn good saler the best ratio of high end tire in my group because I never carry my client where he don't want to go. My opinion on winter tires is purely objective and has been tested.
@f1master9732 жыл бұрын
It all is down to track temps. 1°C isn't good for warming the compound to get it on the right elasticity to diminish friction/consumption. So you need more agressive warming up before the test, and then you are ready to go. With my B class tyres the consumption goes down 10% after warming up. I notice clearly when I come back home after a long trip, and compare with back from work.
