There's nothing WRONG with this late 80's Giant Hybrid, but I'd totally take the used replacement option if I was facing a $200 repair to get things back to "good enough for who it's for". But the customer really liked their old bike, so HERE WE GO AGAIN!

Tires, tubes and brake pads are just part of the running costs for any bike and shouldn't really factor into the "is it worth fixing" question - any bike used as intended will need those things doing after long enough. To my mind it's absolutely worth keeping a bike like this running, after all - it's good enough for who it's for.

For the owner, yes. For a shop trying to turn a profit, no. I would have fixed it too, but I'm not trying to make money, just cover my costs ;-)

Exactly. I'd guess most people get a new bike if they want something different or new. If the person likes their bike, then needing a tuneup, tires and tubes is obviously not a reason to just replace it with some other used bike.

I think it is hard to find another bike for only 50-100 euro more then fixing this up, which is worth that investment. Meaning, it has better upgradability then this bike.

If it feels safer then it is safer. If you don't like it anymore and want something different, go ahead finding another one. Besides that, if it's easily fixable and you like it as it is, why get a new one, what's the motivation?

I have the giant Inova cross almost the same bike but from about 1991, I just keep putting money in to it and it keeps getting better, it's now got dropbars, sora brifters, a mtb wheelset, and a 1x8 drive train with 40 upfront and 11-40 on the rear, with 32 road tyre's, fender and rack it's the most amazing bike ever. Oh and the purple color is amazing.

I think that’s the beauty of owning a bicycle. Bringing back one of your favorite rides only cost $200 to get back in working order? I knew friends in college who would spend more than that on weekend drinks at the club for a girl whose number always seemed to be incorrectly written. My winter bike is a target special Schwinn Loop. But I love how it rides and have tons of miles on it. I do most of the work myself, but have been working tons of hours these last few years. There’s a really cool bike shop in Brooklyn called harvest cyclery that’s staffed by guys you could grab a beer with and do really good work. From an economical standpoint it’s a horrible idea, but from a “hey this is only $200 bucks to get my bike up and running again and it’ll run like new again for thousands of miles as long as I make sure to keep the engine topped off with coffee?”. Easy choice, plus any profit they make is going towards cool guys keeping people’s bikes on the road. As somebody who puts thousands of miles on his bike per year, does that sand paper stuff cut into the life of the rim, or it really doesn’t matter and helps for improved braking? Also, well worth $200 bucks to have my bike made into a video on KZbin. That alone is worth it lol
@billincolumbia

the sandpaper is going to shorten the life of the rim. but, most people won't ride enough miles to wear out a rim, even with the sanding.

90s steel hybrids like this make great all purpose bikes.. I have an old Trek Multitrack that I picked up used for $75.. When I got in to riding again in adulthood I spent way too much (over £1000) upgrading an old clapped out old road bike which only cost £170. Sure it's a massive waste of money especially when you aren't rolling in dough but when you like a bike the value of it is higher to me than it will ever be to anyone else so why not give it a nice snazzy new paint job and components and show it some love. I will never get my money back and I'll never sell it either. But it makes me happy. Sometimes we do irrational things. When you have something you love rationale goes out the window. Damn best Raleigh airlite you're ever gunna see tho 😄

I remember back in the 90s, my cousin gave me a Giant. I think it was a Nutra, but it may have been a Sedona...I gave it to a friend because I owned 2 Bianchi road bikes. I remember that Giant being a pretty good hybrid bike. I have a Shimano wheelset, the kind with the minimal spoke count. It has a dork disc, but it actually makes the rear wheel look real nice, because it's black. It doesn't turn yellow.

Pro tip on wheel adjusting, I always, before doing any adjusting, pluck all the spokes to hear the tension and adjust any that are over tight or under tight to get them to sound all the same, then adjust from there. The reason is often you will find a super loose or super tight spoke, the loose is from years of neglect, the tight is from some dork not knowing what they are doing and messing with it. Just an FYI from one old wrench to younger one.

Replacing “high friction areas” like worn brake pads, tires, grips, seat etc is normal business IMO. I love it when I wear tires out and it is time to get new ones! That means I’ve been doing my pedaling job.

Totally worth restoring in my opinion. I'm an old bike wrencher so I would do my usual restore which is stirp everything off the frame that will come off, clean and polish the frame, then one by one clean polish, lube/grease, true each piece as I put it back on and replace all the consumables so when done the bike is as good as it can be then ride the snot out of it.

@@bkefrmr I'm pretty much retired, don't want no stinking position other then the riding position lol. My point really was for the hobbyist doing it for themselves on their own bike, do it all the way since its yours and your not paying for labor. The way you do it makes sense for a bike shop due to the time constraint, its not feasible for you to do it my way as most people wont be willing to pay you enough typically so you have to cut corners which I totally get and as you say, with your way, "its good enough for who its for" and they are happy with the results which is what matters and you make money and can ride, golf, play guitar and make more vids.

I bought some of that power wash a while back, and have yet to use it on the bikes. I did use it on something of the wife's that had some kind of nasty greasy goo on it, and I was going to attack it with some of my other "harsher" degreasing chemicals (think, automotive... the kind that'll damn near peel your skin off) but decided to give the power wash a test. well son of a monkey it worked amazingly well. I was impressed. and yes P&G, I bought it because of BikeFarmer... so sponsor his tubes already :D

Man I run into this all the time... Just this week I checked in a clapped out 90s diamondback roadbike for a $500 complete overhaul. I managed to extract the stuck seatpost, but the non-driveside BB cup has resisted heat, cold, chemicals, impact, force, cutting... and is now so thoroughly mangled that the old BB cannot be reassembled. So basically, the guy agreed to pay $500 for a fully restored bike, but instead his bike is now destroyed for FREE!

YES, in almost all cases an equal cost in a bicycle mechanic doing a repair or upgrade on my existing bikes is much better than buying a new to me bike. However, I let my bike mechanic have my blessing to do whatever he thinks I need to my 🚲 and I will pay for it. Bike mechanics are sort of like artists. Don't lean over Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci's shoulders and tell him how to paint. Hand him money and tell him to paint, the customer (me), goes away, comes back when the rolling art is done, and I appreciate art daily. If I bring my beloved bikes into the local bike shop in a couple of buckets, I expect that my local bike shop mechanic will make a beautiful Frankenstein monster out of my broken bike parts, providing that I give him enough money, encouragement, and time. Caleb, at Dave's Bike Shop in Idaho Falls took our daughter's old but very well designed, and rarely ever used, steel frame mountain bike that she outgrew, put drop bars on the front, a rack on the back, and now my wife is 3.5 mph FASTER than she was on our daughter's carbon fiber race bike! He was apologetic about the costs but the Mullet Bike (business up front and party in the rear) has transformed my wife's cycling and outlook! She zips around like a toddler on a triple espresso who is chasing a golden retriever puppy! She's FAST and pedals farther without pain! Yesterday she pedaled 41 miles, which is almost TWICE her previous distance record! NO bike off the shelf would do this. Only a local bike shop mechanic could make this functional work of art. She did crash it hard yesterday at mile 41, and it's back in the shop as of yesterday, but I will happily keep my local bike shop owner in business repairing and upgrading our old bikes rather than gambling on a new bike. YES, bring in your old bike, tell your local bike shop mechanic to have the freedom to make art, and appreciate art!

Hello Bike Farmer. In my old age I am using tubless tyres now that I have started biking again. In the 70s I remember finding bubbles in my older tubes. They used to bubble out in places and over time it would damage the tyres and the steel ring would separate from the tyres. Have tubes improved to the point where they dont bubble so one can use older tubes? Or were my tubes so old that they were useless anyway? Mark

To me, that always sounds like a put-down of his customers. It's like "Meh, it's not the greatest job, but it's good enough for the guy who owns this bike." Regreasing the wheel bearings without removing them from the hub, for instance, seems pretty half-ass.

Are we missing something here? Every bike will need new tyres, tubes, brake pads and some lubing at some point in it's life. And the outlay will be the same whether these things are replaced at the time that they need replacing, or all in one go as Andy is doing here. It will just seem a little expensive all at once. But if this dude took the option of taking Andy's 40 bucks and spent 350 bucks on a used bike, guess what it will need in the future?

In the mid 70s, I tore down my Gitane road bike without the benefit of bike specific tools, although I did have a set of cone wrenches. I used whatever grease was laying around. The result made me less than happy. I took it to a one-man LBS &, in less than an hour, he fixed all the mistakes it took me 3 days to make. I wish I'd held on to that bike. What happened to it is a mystery.
