I did the Big John Referee course. $600 three days of class room setting. Out of about forty hopefuls about half didn't show up next day because if you have no jiujitsu experience you will be lost. There were a few Canadians there trying to pass after three attempts! I am a black belt in BJJ, wrestled in high school, black belt Ed Parker Kenpo,Tang Soo Do. I've been competing in most combat sports since the late 80's. I've been a MMA Jiujitsu Instructor or grappling coach (No GI) to eight guys that were on TUF and UFC. Tony Ferguson taking it the furthest. Others included Lodune Sincaid RIP, Jeremy Scorpion Jackson,Chris Beal,Joe Henley...I also was a professional fighter... Turned pro at 42 yrs old . A buddy of mine Brian Peterson was the head grappling coach at Big Johns. When after training there with Jeremy I asked about the referee course. Brian says dude it's not easy. Out of like twenty people maybe one or two pass. I paid and did it anyway. I felt great after first day. Frank Trigg sitting behind me it was his like third time.. Mac Danzig .. so theres UFC guys taking the course. Referees Mike Bell and Beltran and another Referee dark complexion. So there was a submission called the Barataplata that is a complex crank with a kinda 10th planet set up. First I've never seen the Barataplata used in MMA. Never used it never seen someone tap to it out of all the grappling tournaments I've done . ( I was on the Paragon BJJ team with Bill Cooper etc. When we studied film or fights and Big John paused and asks questions .. Frank Trigg would pretty much answer first or oppose ,challenge the question .. and usually sounded way off like huh? I had been throwing smokers at a MMA gym I was coaching at Hostility MMA. I did matchmaking, referring, this was right before Camo started. Pretty much all aspects of MMA. At the course you will referee a mock fight and look for blatant fouls, what ifs check mouthpieces etc. also learn scoring,judging,boxing,kickboxing as well. Ok so on the last day on testing I thought I aced everything despite a disagreement about the oma plata which I felt had a way better chance of landing in MMA than the Barataplata. On one of the test questions it asked what is a grounded opponent? I KNOW what this is from both sides many times.. but I made a joke and said when a competitor is getting his ass kicked and really doesn't want to get up so does the three to two back n forth game looking for a foul from opponent trying to time a knee or something..I didn't pass the course and few months later Frank Trigg reffing camo.events ? Which some of my guys were competing in and winning debuts one with Mac Danzig corner across from me. Others that passed before I took course are aquatintnances former competitors ..fast forward almost a decade and are still doing inspector roles (walking fighters to bathroom ,walking them out to cage, signing off on wraps ) meanwhile Frank Trigg reffing UFC fights .. hmmmm.. all in all it was a fun learning experience.

The only problem with Big John's logic about paying fighters (the organization, be it the UFC or whomever, happens to be struggling) is that if that were true why aren't they paying fighters better when they aren't? And I don't mean marquee fighters because they're always going to do well, but for those UFC fighters that you might not have heard of.

I’m not sure how you say the BKFC was a great card. Nearly every fight fell flat. It looked like Thiago quit, the bicep rupture ruined the fight before, the girl fight was awful and one of the others got called early. It was probably the worst card I’ve ever watched.

I think BKFC can grow even bigger and do great things, at some point the casual ufc fans may decide they've had enough of "Ground control time" and rather watch bare knuckle, because ultimately (and totally understandable) they really want those moments such as Max Holloway's KO of Justin more than any grappling. Maybe BKFC will even make good offers to the "BMF" contenders...
