Lawrence Michael Levine wrote this film, and the lead character of "Allison", specifically for Aubrey. The "April Ludgate" character in Parks & Rec was written specifically for Aubrey. The "Darius" character in Safety Not Guaranteed was written with Aubrey in mind. And the "Brandy" character in The To Do List was written by writer/director Maggie Carey with Aubrey in mind to play the role. Aubrey Plaza is a very unique, special actress and woman. She generates that sort of interest and inspiration in writers. It's long past time for people to start truly recognizing how exceptional she is. And contrary to popular belief, Aubrey has already demonstrated tremendous variety in the roles she's played over her 10-or-so-year-long professional career. This notion that she keeps playing the same sort of character is simply false, ignorant, and unfair. If you like her work, please support her and see this!

At a glance, Aubrey Plaza is starring in her own movie playing the main character but she also has her husband and another actress playing her (Aubrey's) role as wife. Exactly what I’m thinking the twist is. Reminds me of another movie I watched a while back, and I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. But essentially a woman and a man were staying at this beach house, and they progressively become more irritated and verbally abusive with each other. The man eventually assaults the woman, sexually, and at the very end of the assault, they both get up calmly, and thank each other for their time. Apparently, it was all a paid arrangement where they role played as this toxic couple. What sticks with me the most about the ending is that the woman seems to be slightly shaken despite the whole thing being arranged, and it becomes unclear whether the assault was supposed to happen or not. And that’s the end. If anyone knows what I’m talking about, please drop the name! This was a tangent, but I expect Black Bear to be something similar. Could be wrong though.

@@aurora9252 It's about if the roles were reversed a dumbass would still cheat because he chases that feeling in the beginning of relationships like Aubrey so well described. But more in depth ... It's about you can have chemistry with every girl but when you get into a relationship there will be monents when you wish it was "all happy like in the beginning" and when another girl comes into your life and they seem to have more chemistry, it's not because they do, its because you're chasing that "beginning" feeling and that's bad because a relationship is serious and you should stick by your partner even after the excitement is gone even if you get tempted by others who seem to have so much chemistry with you, but you forget that's how it was in the beginning of your first couple and eventually it will fade away and if you're dumb enough you'll cheat even if you have a baby on the way until the new relationship with that girl you cheated with reaches it's plateau and then you do it all again.

1st of all the trailer is cut in a deceptive way... Because it's basically 2 movies in 1.. every time the bear shows up the script has ended (each script ends with a black bear).. Now the events we see aren't really happening.. Aubrey's character is at the lake house by herself writing scripts & that's what we see playing out.. that's why we see the same three main characters in somewhat different roles... Don't try to connect the 2 totally different plots... She sits by the water, meditates., Get an idea .. then walks back to her writing room & writes a new script.. we saw 2 of them... I liked the 2nd story more it had more depth

I watched it and I loved it. It’s one of those movies where you watch it to experience the journey and what each character is thinking and feeling, rather than anticipate for the ending. The trailer is like that because... well, there’s no way to really express or tease the movie because even after watching the movie, you have to really think about what it means, and go through it again. But that’s the fun of it. And having watched Aubrey Plaza’s movies all these years since Parks and Recreation, I think you are going to be amazed at the true depth of her talents in this movie. This movie may seem unappealing to you based on the trailer, but please refrain from commenting negative opinions about the content/acting/direction/design when you haven’t actually seen the whole thing.

I read some comments and I replied to one with this same text. It may help you if you didn't understand the film. There you go. Spoilerss Sooo, I read this and it made perfect sense to me: Second half is actually Allison's story where she is the actress that is hard to work with. And her husband cheats on her, that's why she does not go to the cottage with him. She knows he cheated. And it's the mind plays that we don't understand why the man looks exactly like her husband and pregnant woman is Blair and the cottage is the same as the filming location. There we assume it's all on her mind or it's the script that she works on where she is not the victim but the guilty one. The stronger one.
