The interesting thing with Joe Louis and Max Schmelling is they actually became good friends later in life. Also, schmelling actually helped some Jews escape Germany before the war.

Schmelling had a lot of character to him. He refused to fire his Jewish manager, despite considerable pressure to do so. After WWII, he was given the Coke franchise in Germany, making him very wealthy. Louis, as stated, had money issues, but he also acquired health problems from his previous fights. He became hospitalized, but his costs were covered by a silent benefactor. This benefactor would also cover his funeral costs on Louis's death. The benefactor's name was Max Schmelling. Thank you, Under the Influence on CBC for this bit of relevant trivia.

The same man who bragged about receiving applause from the Ku Klux Klan after he shared his thoughts about why interracial marriage is evil? The same man who cheated on his wife in front of the public eye and showed no remorse? Muhammad Ali has done many great things, but he really did some terrible things, too. I remember once seeing a documentary about Sonny Liston called, "Sonny Liston: The Champion No One Wanted." It was pretty fascinating and spoke of not only how he learned to Box and his career, but also his public image vs what he was like in his private life. According to many accounts from friends and family, he was soft spoken when you could get him to talk at all considering he was also often shy. He had a love for children even if they weren't his kids, and got along well with pretty much everyone in his community. He was often described Boxing-wise as this mean and tough-as-nails power-puncher, being depicted as thuggish and short-tempered, often as a result of his shy and quiet nature being turned around on him as being unlikeable and preferring to allow his fists to do the talking. Naturally with all of these assumptions and negative portrayal of him and his image, it's not surprising that people looked to Muhammad Ali to replace him. Ali wasn't just an excellent fighter, he was well-spoken, witty, and clever with his rhyme scheme in regards to interviews as well as just being a personality that people could really attach to in that sense. Sonny Liston was someone that I think was misunderstood so greatly that it impacted his career severely and I think that he didn't really get the credit and understanding he deserved. He may have been the champion no one wanted, but there was more to him than that. In regards to his public persona, he was the man no one really knew.

Just to clear up on schmeling vs Louis here. It’s been said in the comments about the nazis and simply put he wasn’t one. he had fought in the u.s. A few years, won the title before the nazis came to power and he had joe jacobs a Jewish manager in his corner. But just on the match in general. It is the first time a fighter of note looked at video material to study his opponent. He noticed that Louis drops his hand after the jab while staying square on. Not exactly a no no in boxing but if schmeling could maintain distance, kept his more side on stance and pawed his jab to get an exchange going then would throw a lead right cross or 1-2 then either clinch or slip the hook. It’s a fight plan that we should regardless of the era that it was in, be remembered for its brilliance and innovation. Louis became a complete fighter after it. His shuffle jab would become more lateral to give himself more angles to get away or create frames and counter opportunities. Which helped him a lot in the rematch because he closes the gap so quickly. And realigning their positions where schmeling could not get off. And just to remind people that Louis had only been a pro for 2 years. With a limited and unolympic style amateur experience. A being a significant turning point of boxing strategy. Just a mildly more in-depth look at that fromBoxing fan. And great video. Love the channel ever since the Punic wars and the squeaky voice.

Gotta correct something here. The Schmelling Lewis fight took place at the old Yankee Stadium, not Madison Square Garden. It attracted 70,000 fans, one of the largest crowds in the history of the stadium, and was attended by Hollywood celebrities and (for some reason) J. Edgar Hoover.

There is no meaningful comparison between Muhammad Ali and Colin Kaepernick in terms of what they suffered for their convictions they are in totally different leagues. Ali lost everything and Kaepernick got a deal with Nike...
@StephySon3 жыл бұрын
The point in comparison is that black athletes are still targeted. Jack, Joe, and Muhammad all were notable black men of each of their times. And white supremacist America couldn't handle that. If they did something to step out of line or upset that balance they were targeted in some way. It is only because of the times we are currently in that Colin got off better compared to the previous 3. Yes indeed each of their situations is different make no mistake. But lets not pretend one mans crusade against institutional racism and police brutality dint end up with him being black balled and convos on race being revved up which is even more notable when you think of the uprisings for black loves last year And FYI, in his final time, Muhammad loved Colin.

Look up the Ken Burns documentary Unforgivable Blackness: The Jack Johnson Story. It's pretty amazing and goes deep into the details on his career and life in the way EH can't. There is A LOT that's been glossed over in this episode.

I’m Black, and I like the sentiment that you meant to relay with “[racism] is undefeated.” It is important to stress how successful powers backed by racism have been and still are in their endeavors. But it’s us that’s undefeated. We’re still here and some of us are even thriving despite powers doing their best to systematically exploit and use Black lives. We’re still here. Black people are undefeated.

Sports have always been political on one level or another, even their very start back in the original greek olympics was used to promote themselves and assert dominance,.
@jackofalltrades61293 жыл бұрын
@@alejandrovallejo6763 That's a misconception. People have used sports to be political, but the sports themselves are not. Sports, much like combat are about training oneself to compete against others and see who is the best. If you step into the arena and focus on who your opponent is and what your match could mean politically, your opponent can use that to steal victory from under you. When you step into the ring, the field, whatever, it is just you and your opponent, their moves and your moves, their mind and your mind. Nothing else matters.
@spellbound18753 жыл бұрын
@@jackofalltrades6129 Would it be fair to say that while sports are not political organized sporting events are? Because while it may be counterintuitive athletes are in the minority of individuals involved in sporting events, even if they are making the largest personal contributions.
