It truly is a great book, I was very happy to have read it. And my professor did a great job of presenting it to the class and giving a lot of supplementary material. Good luck at university!

It is a good class, and we're reading some great short stories and novels. Since I've gone back to university it seems most teachers have an obsession with very modern books, or very old. It sometimes feels they are embarrassed by 1930-1990. I would really recommend reading this one, although it is quite heartbreaking, it is very easy to read.

I just finished this book, and I'm surprised at how little discussion there is of it on KZbin. It's funny because, as I was reading this novel, I kept trying to imagine reading it from the perspective of someone who wasn't American. Interesting that the first video I come to is from a white, non-American! I especially appreciate where you talked about why you like books which mirrors the parts of Black Boy in which Wright talked about his reasons for reading. It always seems to come back to seeing the world from different perspectives. Thank you for sharing yours!

Thank-you so much for the kind comment! Black Boy really should be much more well-known than it is. It's a shame that I might not have heard of it unless I had taken that one university class. We also read several short stories from Wright and James Baldwin (Sonny's Blues, Going To Meet The Man, Previous Condition). The scene towards the end of the book, when he was going North and the white people were telling him, "Don't you start getting ideas when you get up there!" That hit me hard, like they were telling him he could never escape. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video, since I've gone back to university, it's been hard to find the time to make the videos, and sometimes I feel my reviews are too superficial. It would be nice to put some more work into them, talk more about the author's life. Hope you are well and not affected by this terrible blizzard in America that is in the news today.
