You guys don't seem to understand what's happening here. Asta's actions have zero consequence regarding his innocence; this isn't an actual trial, this is a show to appease the nobles. Damnatio is well aware of Asta's accomplishments and the truth regarding the war; All of that is irrelevant to him. All the Nobles know is that the kingdom was attacked by, what they believe to be, traitorous magic knights aiding a known terrorist organization, and someone must be held responsible. If the Magic Knights involved with the attacks are allowed to be placed on trial then not only would the Clover Kingdom lose soldiers, but the Noble's trust in said soldiers will wane; and during a period where the Clover Kingdom is currently at risk of being invaded by at least of two of its neighboring Kingdoms, both of those things could be catastrophic. Damnatio knows this, he also knows that if they could prove that a devil was indeed behind this, and forced those knights to fight then they would be cleared of charges, but no one but the people who are currently on trial saw the Devil, and without proof other then Asta's power they never be proven innocent. Damnatio for the sake of the Kingdom is willing to sacrifice one person, a peasant, so that the kingdoms chances of survival in the future are greater, regardless of the heroics of that person; in fact, Damnatio was relying on Asta's heroic spirit in this situation; he knew that he would be willing to take the fall for others, and if not, he'd be easy to force into a position in which he can be scapegoated, as we just witnessed with Marie and the Newspaper.

Yeah, but still fucked up tho. No way the magic knights will accept this and just will create more internal conflict between the magic knights and the royals which they cant afford this time. Thats why Julius made that proposal to prevent this.
