In November I visited the Black cat roundabout to tell the story of how it came to be and what the future holds... in this video, we're looking at the progress made towards that future with the A428 and A421 Dual Carriageway Upgrade. It's costing near enough £1,000,000,000 yes...billion and after all is said and done, we'll have 10 miles of new dual carriageway between the Black Cat and Caxton Gibbet roundabouts.

Shenanigans videos are comedy based on a deep foundation of documentary exposing the collosal sums of money wasted and pocketed by our vile government and their friends. Mr. Marples is still alive and doing well beyond the River Styx, well until it gets privatised. Severn Trent Water have already started pumping sewage into it.

@@Stealth360stealthyes, lots of people care. You are in the minority. One only has to look to towns such as Northampton to see what happens when we carelessly tear down our heritage in favour of new projects that have no relevance whatsoever less than a quarter century on - in the case of Northampton, undeterred, they have even pulled down _more_ of their architectural heritage along with the failed buildings that they built the first time around. I can't wait for the Labour new towns projects that will bring this model to areas of the country as yet untouched by the hand of 'progress'. 🙄

What a coincidence that Brook Cottage was left open to the elements over the winter and has now deteriorated. And now it can only be demolished. What an “unfortunate” “accident” that was! I’ve seen this before with a company that wanted to demolish a couple of buildings but weren’t allowed because they were listed. There was an “unfortunate” fire involving one, and an “unfortunate” accident with the other when some cables supporting the roof “accidentally” got cut when work was being done to convert the building for a different use. But the roof didn’t collapse, amusingly it cost the company involved a fortune to repair the damage to the roof cables on a building they didn’t want

Oh you mean the well sign posted big yellow sign that warns you that the left hand lane is for the A1 north at 300 yards from the roundabout then at 200 yards then at the point where the 2nd lane appears and then actually on the roundabout too! Sadly people believe they are too important and feel that using that lane will jump the queue of vehicles using the A421 towards MK and Bedford Personally anyone who tries it gets hung out to dry by myself daily and anyone else who has a sense of social justice in front or behind me generally does the same! Basically it becomes a “that sounds like a YOU problem” If you can’t read signs and want to take the risk of being in the wrong lane you’re also got to accept it and eat humble pie and go back round the roundabout to correct your mistake!

Brook Cottage was still standing at 3pm today (26th June). At £10million a mile this is one expensive road. Doesn't help though when they are replacing bridges that don't appear to be quite wide enough on the existing A421, that was built less than 20 years ago.... As for their compound(s), good grief, have Civil Engineers turned into a bunch of wussies? When I started my working life on a Building site in the late 80's, we had a few Portakabins, a Portaloo, and an old caravan for a tea hut, with a bit of hardcore on the floor to make a yard. You also had to wait several weeks for BT to connect a phone line to site, so if you had an emergency it was either find a call box or knock on a door to ask to use the phone. Now they want tarmac car parks, (complete with white lines), centrally heated office blocks, Gold Star Toilet and shower facilities, a 4 wheel drive each, fast Broadband, kitchen staff, and an Orange suit for every day of the week, with several spares in case they get dirty. Only to spend more money ripping the lot up at the end of the job and putting it back to soil.

That was similar for us Nick when they were converting the M4 to four lanes through Berkshire. The “road builders city” that they constructed between Reading and Slough on the eastbound bound side to house hundreds of road workers over approx five years had all the facilities including clinic medical centre and also a welfare & counselling section for road workers that presumably were missing their families at home etc. ( so I was told ). All returned to beautiful green fields again now thankfully…😁

More progress at the black cat end with the preliminary roadworks snaking round the bottom of St Neots then stopping abruptly in fields, then work started on sketching out on the ground the other two junctions. Be great when its finished, should have been built like this the first time the black cat was improved, or the second time. Third time lucky

This was when this road was the main road carrying the East/West traffic in the area before the A14 was built to the north of St Neots. Perfect and really well fitting outro music 🎧 It’s such a shame that everything that’s been preserved about decades almost centuries has just been demolished within days. I remember it really well, when I watched your video about the black cat roundabout. I thought it’s so lovely that they care about the history in that area so much, that they’ve even created the black cat to put it into the roundabout. And now it’s all gone. It’s such a shame.

John, me and my mrs get a tad upset as when we start a video we are sitting there anticipating a wave and there was no wave, we even wave back. So thanks John, tonight too adults were waving at the tv in vain. (Feel like that’s a dull men’s club post 😂) love the vids, do more around East Sussex please 😊

another well crafted slice of information with a side of resigned sarcasm so thanks for that Jon - any plans to visit that mega traffic light monster roundabout in Cambridge yet....?

I think I saw you filming this a few weeks back. I saw a drone and oddly thought “oh I wander if that’s Jon”. I also feel I’m the dark grey car emerging onto the roundabout in the first shot. At least that’s what I think…

Hi Jon love your videos. If you would like to do a similar “before and after” look at the A46 near Stoneleigh in Warwickshire that would be very interesting. In fact the “new junction” that started back in 2020 is EXACTLY the f&@king same today as it was back in February 2021 with no work whatsoever being done on it. The question is why??? Anyway that saved you a video and possibly gave someone a laugh. Keep up the good work 👍👍

I use this route regularly and we'll see if they can get it right this time. 12 years ago they made the roundabout bigger to reduce congestion...which didn't work.

That house sounds like a lot of the pubs round here that "mysteriously" burned down, and very quickly afterwards had poor quality houses built on their sites, someone did the dirty there... :\

Black Cat roundabout needs a massive upgrade including a new bridge for the A1 to go over River Great Ouse. As well a new road to avoid St. Neots coming to and from Cambridge and A14 which would make it lot easier to get to Bedford and Milton Keynes. Wish this would have happened back in the 1990s or 2000s.

The Black Cat is located outside the A428 Wintringham site office on Loverose Way. Delivered there, thought it was the site's nickname until i saw this video as I live nowhere near this area.

This single point in the United Kingdom was the bane of my life for years. I lived near Caxton and commuted to Milton Keynes. On a Friday the traffic starts to build around 1400 and backs up for miles.

There’s a massive project at Milton Keynes east! At a similar stage as this one maybe a few months ahead, would make a great video. I can give you some inside info if u want ;)

To be fair, its being done by the same team that completed the A14 upgrade ahead of schedule, so I'm vaguely hopeful about it. Also you can see the black cat statue leaning on one of their compounds as you head westbound on the A428 - can't remember quite where though, I was on a bus and half asleep.

The pace of new road construction was never rapid but it is pretty glacial now. Rather a lot of HSE and kick off meetings interspersed with time to think sessions perhaps. Strategic imperative matters are not even secondary nowadays. I once launched half a rowing eight off a trailer I was towing at the Caxton Gibbet roundabout. Fortunately I was not responsible for its being tied on but I probably should have checked 😮

I suggest a cut out of John to be erected on the roundabout to take the place of the Black Cat. This impress upon the planners and trades involved in the transformation that they are being WATCHED and Will be JUDGED in future reports from the the High Priest of Highways Hiccups. Cheers

Thanks for this explanation; I make occasional trips through there and was wondering what the plan was. Not much wiser but will await 2027 and return of the Black Cat. I think the upgrade of the A14 between Cambridge and Huntingdon must be an exception to your ‘not much good at these sort of things’ as it seemed to be executed in good time. Also the A142 southern bypass around Ely which was quick IMO.

On removing listed buildings.........a similar but smaller building was in the way of Jct 26 on the M25 and the owners insisted it be moved to the north side of the M25 to stop their objections rather than take the money and run. It was relocated but after a year they moved out because of the noise.
