Corded versus battery, corded will work in 70 years time, batteries will all be dead. The cord can be a pain but I prefer them, no charging works first time every time.
@robfahey13492 жыл бұрын
I feel the same way although it seems like there's no incentives for companies to continue making corded products, everything seems to be cordless these days. I think its about the money because once you commit to cordless and invest in it, next thing you know they change the batteries and then your stuck having to start over again. I feel like the companies know this and hope for this planned obsolescence.

That was the same kind of B&D drill that almost killed me way back in 1963. Fresh out of high school working on my first job. The boss told me to get the drill motor and hone a cylinder out. Got all set up with my feet firmly planted & my hands gripping the handle. I pulled the trigger and the thing was shorted out & all that electricity went through me. I couldn’t do a thing but emit some sort of a guttural sounds . I couldn’t let go either. Luckily my co worker saw what was happening and rushed over to unplug the thing. WOW! What an experience. I still remember that feeling. I’m lucky to be alive. I have a great deal of respect for electricity today. This was before they put a U-ground plug on tools.

Totally agree on bearings. My landrover gearbox rebuild and also the front axle, I’ve left 50 year old bearings in place, still within tolerance, as they are named bearings and glass hard steel. Maybe a new one would make the shaft ever so slightly tighter but in months it’d be back to where the old ones are and in a coupla years be worn out and knackered! Half the battle is to know when to leave well alone. I’ve got a similar drill to your recent pair , it’s a Wolf and runs so slowly! Great for honing bores!

Beautiful work on the drill and stand John. Though I do more work with battery powered tools these days I still like the older Black & Decker tools. I gave my nephew Matt Lynd @ Turtle Chapel Forge on Facebook, an aluminum frame bench drill press with a newer, but still aluminum body drill that he is using to make custom knives. He also bought Old #47. The treadle grinder I rebuilt. No shop work for a while. When I do get back into the shop I have a few hundred projects to work on.

@ScoutCrafter2 жыл бұрын
Having two vises on boards really has helped me out a few times, it's even better if the vises are the same size and model but so many times you can clamp each vise to the bench and suspend work between them. If you were doing a lot of drills a jig could be made to really make things easy. Thanks!

The drill looks terrific. Nice job on the cleanup. I like the polished cap more than the black, although the black does look good. You did not mention what you did to the chuck taper to clean it up. Looks to be holding well now. I have a Milwaukee Magnum 1/2in corded drill I purchased around 1982. Back then it was made in USA. Still looks and works like new. It does not get much use these days, but when I need the torque it is waiting to go to work. Dave.

Evening John! I am just catching up. For once I have nothing to add. Your new longer format videos are extremely informative and I agree with everything you have said. I could not possibly add a thing. I did want to mention, that jeweling photo I was speaking of with the factory women making craftsman name plates, I had a closer look with a magnifying glass. I thought you might like to know, apparently craftsman used Ticonderoga number 2 solely for jeweling. There are multiple visible boxes. You might be the only other person excited about this. Hope the holidays are treating you well. Take care

I've had good luck on old bearings, even ones that are frozen. I'll pick out as much dirt as possible, douse it in wd40, place it in a hot mixture of Simple Green and water in the HF ultrasonic cleaner (3 times on max time), dry it out then lightly oil as needed. They almost always work like new. It saves a ton of money on those oddball ones like on Walker Turner drill presses.
@ScoutCrafter2 жыл бұрын
Rob- You are so right, those old bearings were made of Virgin 52100 steel, some of the best steel ever made! The knife guys all look for that steel to make awesome knives. Most drills the bearings get dirty and the grease gets fry but the bearings are still great. The exceptions are machines with a lot of hours and heavy load forces.. Thanks!!!!!!

What a great resto Scout. You are so right about if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. It get quite a few power tools from my scrap yard and repair them but you will never see a video of that on my channel because as soon as you don’t replace a bearing all the Tubers get on and complain that you didn’t do it properly whether the bearings or brushes need replacing or not. There are some nasty keyboard jockeys out there. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
@ScoutCrafter2 жыл бұрын
LOL Stuart- What a lot of the people watching don't understand is the old bearings and brushes were much better quality then you can get today because most of today's stuff is Sub-Par, the older bearing were made of 52100 steel that was amazing. New bearings are questionable as to what they are made of. The brushes back then were also made of a very fine carbon and little filler, today not so. I even have old drills with 2 prong cords that are still nice with no cracking, I will keep them and just bite on a stick! =D
