I'm a UK based Art teacher and showed this to all my classes during black history month. They have loved it but all spotted that Basquiat's date of birth was wrong because they saw in a text book that he died at age 27 and it makes him look just 20 in what you have said. Asides that you have offered inspiration to my students which is essential.

He did die at 27. Started very young, the last years of his life was not exclusive to his work. He was just 20 in some of these images. I'm curious to what was the disconnect with full detail of Basquiat. What was missed in this video.

@@ikamille She was saying that the birth year to year of death found at the bottom of his section, starting at 3:20, is listed as 1968-1988 and it should have been 1960-1988. She was just trying to give the creator a heads up that they may have made a typo while also complimenting the overall video.

With regards to Jean-Michel Basquiat: He wasn't merely a black artist, he was an Afro-hatian-latino/Hatian-latino/Afro-latino artist. His Father was from Haiti and his Mother was Puerto Rican, born to Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, NYC. So she was on effect, a New York Rican. Jean-Michele spoke Spanish at home and also incorporated Spanish words in his art works. By conveniently erasing his Puerto Rican heritage and claiming him as merely black, you nullify the totality of Basquiat's being and impact as both a person and an artist! He wouldn't be who he was and created the art that he did w/o both sides of his Ethnic heritage. Please STOP conveniently appropriating him as just a black artist and recognize the added factor of his having been Afro-hispanic! It's insultive and hurtful to erase the Spanish side of his ethnicity. He wouldn't have been the incredible artist that he was without his Spanish side as well. Don't white wash his legacy to conviniently fit a black narrative. You can't erase his Puerto Rican/Latino side no matter how hard you may try!
