I travel solo with my backpack because my friends will not come with me. I have been all over Europe including Prague, Brussels, Germany, Italy, France, etc. I actually dragged my dad along with me because he was bugging me about traveling solo. I have spent one month in the Amazon Jungle, traveled all through Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, and my favorite Brazil. I have stayed in favelas, stayed with Native Americans, slept on boast for 5 days, etc. I am actually planning another solo trip to Peru and then Costa Rica. I have never met one African-American while traveling through South America, and of course people think that I am either African or Brazilian. I am a teacher and encourage my students to travel. I think (my opinion) when you haven't been exposed to certain things, you may not do certain things. I have had great experiences while abroad and I think that I help to kill the negative stereotype of African-American women when I do travel. I actually have had people say to me, "Wow, you aren't loud and ghetto," which is annoying. I just try to be me when I travel and be "aware" that I represent a race, gender, and country when I do travel. By the way I am from Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, and did not hear about or see people like me "backpacking." I just knew, as a kid, that I wanted to travel and see the world. I am blessed to be given the opportunities and share them with my family and students.

I once vacationed to Croatia before I dropped out of UCLA and I was young and excited and didn't know much about european men customs. while I was riding in the train to my hotel, the row across, there was this white guy who kept flashing his penis at me and I couldn't change seats because I was sitting next to my friend. They never see black women so the first one they see they react negatively to. So ever since then I will only vacation to places with a significant black population i.e. Brazil, France, England, Germany, Italy, Africa, Caribbean etc.

cableaccesslover Same with me sista, I try to visit places where there is a balance of races. There's a lot of places in the world that's not good for black men to travel alone. Places like India in which they are strongly racist towards blacks and them mothafuckas are blacker than me. Rome and Greece is out of the question for me. I try to stay South of the hemisphere. It is very rare to find black Americans traveling, but there are so many black people from London and other parts of the UK that I have ran into around the world. When my brother went to Thailand in 2011 he saw about 5 black people on his 3 month stay there. When we went back in 2013 it was not out of the ordinary to see 2-3 of us out in Chiang Mai partying it up. The word is spreading, black people especially Americans just have to more exposure to this huge world we live in. Love the work!

The most, most black people will travel is to family reunions. People you fill comfortable with, not a strange place where everyone is white or asian, and you're some isolated little person. Well I can't speak for others but traveling for me is a mixed bag. For instance I went to Spain for a while and had an amazing time. The people, culture and etc were all just amazing. There were a few skinheads but nothing really of note in their behavior towards me or the others with me. People asked borderline racist questions but mostly out ignorance not maliciousness. I was 15 and had travelled prior but mostly to the Caribbean (Antigua, Trinidad and elsewhere) but this trip opened my eyes to the adventures one could have travelling. I wanted to be well travelled after it. Later on dating a Chinese woman at the time I went to Puerto Rico,.. the level of overt racism (especially as a mixed couple) was so bad that we got on a plane for $100 (liat airline) to Antigua and spent all but the last day of our vacation there instead. Now before I travel I scour google for how racist a place is before I consider going. And it has kept me from travelling to a lot of places. If I am on Vacation or just trying to go see somewhere I don't want to deal with racism. Eastern Europe is a mixed bag especially for blacks as some places are just ignorant about who black people are. They may ask stereotypical questions but they honestly mean no harm,.On the other hand some have really just absorbed American media and aren't so nice and can even be dangerous. Dating a Polish woman I was going to go on a trip with her to see Poland, but her family looking out for me said it may not be a good idea. The area they lived in was not very progressive and they didn't want me affected by the racism of the area. Racism is a serious factor in where I decide to go. Lots of places sound nice but how people will respond to my skin color has an affect for sure.

+Nigel Botchey Sure but the countries in Europe are smaller and closer together. It's only an hour from UK to almost anywhere else in Europe, and the airfare is really cheap. You can go to Paris or Spain for a weekend. The US is so much bigger. It's an hour flight just from San Francisco to Los Angeles, and that's only one state. It's a 10 hour flight for me to go to Europe and I have to save up a lot of money for it. The cost definitely restricts the amount of Americans traveling outside North America.

Because this brotha didn't have the funds to travel extensively, I used jobs & education to do it. I had a chance to live in Johannesburg, Tokyo, and London, and to travel to different countries of their respective continents. However, I have family members who don't travel outside of the tri-state area. There may be a desire, but I also think some think it's not actually obtainable. I've had family members asked me if I was in the military because that was the main way that they, as black people themselves, think that a black person would be able to travel. And in my travels, I did come across other black Americans and non American Blacks doing their thing.

Black people do travel. May not be as many as whites but we do travel. As for the girl who said black people only travel the beaten path, umm what tourist doesn't??? And to be quite frank most white American tourists that do travel act a fool and really paint a negative picture of America in these foreign countries. They dont speak a lick of the language of the country they travel to and dont care to try. So as for traveling as a whole, whats the point of doing it if you go and do the same thing you do at home, it's an honor so act like it. This goes more for whites from my experience than blacks.

The guy's comment about money is spot on though.
@davidelliott15948 жыл бұрын
I have to strongly disagree with the stereotype in this video that black people (black/African Americans) don't travel. I myself am well traveled throughout Latin America, Europe and Africa, and every country I've ever traveled to, I've met other African American travelers. It's very easy to create friendships because you have this cultural link while being in a foreign environment. Now if the question is do MOST black Americans travel, particularly internationally, I would say not most, but a considerable number do travel. However, the same could be said about most AMERICANS in general. Statistically, less than half of ALL Americans don't have a passport. Which means that less than half of ALL Americans regardless of race have never traveled outside of the country. So, black Americans should not exclusively acquire this stigma of not traveling because that same stigma could be applied to Americans in general.

There is a point of privilege even within the Black community that I believe plays into the travel aspect. It stands to reason (i'll let the "fact-checkers" fact-check) that mostly Middle to Upper-Middle Class Americans have the financial means to think about taking say, a family of 4 abroad to Europe in the summer. It's quite expensive! But if you are a single high-income earner...again, pre-supposing Middle Class status, then maybe you can afford to take yourself. When I tell my friend "Hey, i'm thinking about going to India dawg, you wanna roll?" - most of the time the answer is "My money kinda funny right now." or something to that effect. That brother could have just bought 26in rims, all 3 latest Jordan throwback releases AND popped bottles for his birthday. It's all in how you see you money and spend it...and it's about exposure. I find deals. I am not rich. But when you have a passport AND when you have been to a country or three, the idea of that $399 flight from LA to Argentina last-minute doesn't seem as daunting. Another reason is we like to feel comfortable. Aside from Anglo-speaking countries, a lot of Black Americans are not fluent in multiple languages, which makes traveling even in Europe challenging. Hard to fully enjoy Paris when you don't speak French! :-) And the other thing I think is of note too is that the best airfare deals are from major market, big cities, while 50+ percentage of African-Americans live in the South. So if you are not in say Atlanta, it cost waaaay more to fly from Alabama, Louisiana, South Carolina to Ghana (just picked a random country) than from NYC, DC, LA, Chicago. Living on both the East Coast and the West Coast, whereas I might find a deal to Japan for $600-700, from DC it might be $1100-1200, which is not quite as cheap. My hope is that with this program and Blogs like Black Atlas by AmericanAirlines more Black folks will get into traveling. If anyone is reading this and wants a cheap "1st trip" our the States, you cannot go wrong with Dominican Republic, Cancun or Cabo San Lucas Mexico, Toronto or Montreal, Canada and London, England. and for deals, try going on flyer talk.com which is the best blog for newbies just learning about Points, miles, mileage runs, deals, etc...

That right there is total bullcrap. Many African Americans have moved because of jobs, school, or whatever. Then there are the ones in the military.

Wow, not sure what to say on this one. If you don't have money it makes it difficult to travel comfortably. I travel the USA as part of my job many years ago. I have traveled for pleasure to China a few times, London (the icon I have was taken in London) and Toronto many times. But then some places I just don't have an interest in traveling to like Mexico. Lived in Southern California since I was a teenager and ever had an desire to go there. Of course I met or ran into American blacks in London , but I have also ran into some brothers in shanghai 2005. My last trip was 2013 ran into some Black women attending a teachers conference. It is becoming more common to see other black Americans travel, but we have to remember were only 13% of the us population. I never expect to see a flood of black people in Bejing. However we are there.

If I'm correct, first generation Africans of today hold attitudes a lot different than African Americans. Different viewpoints and values, not just because of obvious cultural differences but a lot of them don't hold the same assumptions a lot of us AAs do. White Europeans and White Americans hold different views as well. It's stupid to not travel because you assume they won't be welcoming to you. Assumptions don't help anything.
@eniola9889 жыл бұрын
1. I don't think it's fair to compare the tendencies of black people to white people. White people have always been so much more privileged than other 'races' in so many dimensions. 2. To consider within the black population that you know is flawed because there is a wider demographic of black people outside of small population that you know and outside America because to me, who has lived and grown up in London, its weird to say black people don't travel. So consider the whole population of black people. 3. Places like Europe is a popular holiday or travelling destination for white people stereotypically. So systematically we would think they are popular holiday destination for people in general. Aah we need to consider the fact that the system we live in is catered to white people
@losgryfog9 жыл бұрын
that's a worthless excuse. white people don't have the coward nature most black Americans do. white people travel to tons of places that have publicly stated they don't welcome whites. that doesn't stop them. white people travel places not knowing the outcome, blacks need someone to give them permission first
@Animefreak2429 жыл бұрын

Linda Adeyemo I noticed white folks going into Iranian territory like they don't realize that their not suppose to go in that country, but these dumbasses still do it. I have a friend's all over the world, and I was kind of shock to see white Europeans visiting Morocco. American white folks that is.

This is so true. I had a white friend of mine pointed out places he would travel and attempt to buy a home in and I was warning him that he should be careful about traveling to some of these places but it went in one ear out the other. He really had this entitled, arrogant attitude that he'll be accepted anywhere.

My professor was from Nepal and looked like a black guy, so I know they must have seen people that look like sister gurl in Nepal. Girl, bye. Let's not exaggerate. The brother who travels for work is probably right: you need a certain income level and lifestyle to travel. You also need a certain mindset to travel. Sometimes AA's are satisfied and content with what they know. So going to Nepal is highly unlikely. Mexico, yes. Caribbean cruises, definitely. But I don't know many AA's who want to visit... the great unknown. Again, a lot of it has to do with socio economic status and class. Even where I am from, people of a certain class travel. The struggle is a serious obstacle to elevating oneself to pleasure beyond the immediately available...
@msjrene059 жыл бұрын
Lol! Yes. That girl irritated me to the core with her stupid remarks. I think that most African Americans don't travel due to finances. I thank God my husband and I are able to travel extensively, but we're also of a certain class. I think the socio economic factor could have been expounded on more here. I know many black people who would travel all the time if given the opportunity.

Somebody mentioned that black people don't want to be bothered to get a passport. Well, that is just dumb. A passport is one of the most important identification documents a person can own. Even if you do not intend to travel internationally, it is a very good idea to get a passport card. The cost for that, including the photos, is $70 and they are good for 10 years. With the Customs and Border Patrol overreach going on right now and the harassment of US Citizens of all races, you cannot go wrong by having a passport card.

One place I see few to zero black tourists is the national parks. I see 10 times as many Japanese and Chinese tour groups crammed on a bus 50 at a pop as I do 1 black family of 4. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing any. The same could be said for Hispanics.

it's solidifying stereotypes in the eyes of a particular generation and a particular demographic too. I've met too many black americans in the countries I lived in. in Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Turkey, Germany, UK, Holland, etc etc etc. Anyway, this series was interesting at first, but now I am starting to see that they're targeting a sheltered demographic.

Money and free time and are obvious things, I wasn't even talking about the majority of people worldwide who are travelling... I said you are most likely to meet a black person outside of America who is none African American. Also the majority of black immigrants/ black foreign students are none African American. You might run into some African Americans in South Korea,Mexico or Japan because there are many Americans there.

Black people from the United States don't travel anywhere, not even inside The US, only the educated and rich black people do travel and they travel in an expensively and luxorious way. My girlfriend works for an international on-line travel agency, it's a call center where people call them to reserve and buy the vacation packages, sometimes she tells me, they have outbound calls (this means that the agents have to call people from a list) because they have certain campaign with great deals and as soon as they hear/notice they're talking to a black person or someone from India, Pakistan or an Arab person or Asian women the agents hang up unless they detect an educated or rich black person, she tells me thay they (her colleagues and she) can detect them from the very minute they say "hello", the words they use, they are educated enough to stay in the call and hear the offer and ask questions and the words they use to communicate are way way different than the avarege black folk. Asian and Middle East women cannot take decisions without their husbands and Pakistan and India men are stingy, and they only want vacation packages to India and Pakistan! Latin American blacks or black people from other countries they do travel! Hispanics if they have papers (passport or legal residence in The US) they do travel!

I've heard this same notion all of my life. "Black people don't travel." And usually I'm hearing it from a black person who travels lol. Mind you, they're speaking to me, another black person who travels -- both domestically and internationally. It may just better of updating our thinking to reflect the cultural, social and economic climate of the current generation.

This too. If by "black" you mean Americans with African descent, you are talking 14% of the country. That is 14% of 300 million. That's about 42 million people versus 7 billion worldwide. So without regard to stereotypes, you should be surprised when you see other African Americas abroad.

LMAO@we are not alone...that was funny...same thing happens to me in Tibet..I find that most blacks travel internationally with the exception of our african american cousins. I would guess it has more to do with the lack of funds and interests. I wonder why.

Black people are "African-American" because we descend from AFRICA but no one knows exactly where. White people come from Europe, but most of them know where. If you're from Ghana or Jamaica or Nigerian, you can take whichever descriptor you'd like, but black people in America (who are a biologically separate ethnic group from Africans due to our Native American+European+African genetic makeup) get the generic "African-American".

I would say blacks outside the US travel more than black from the US mainly because of proximity and resources. Blacks in other countries many times are dying to escape their countries for more resources and the proximity of other countries is close like Africa and Europe who are separated only by small bodies of water. America HAS ALL the resources so the desire to leave isn't as strong for lower class blacks. So I dont think this is a fair comparison.
@maraniOHYES12 жыл бұрын
maybe the reason we don't see many black people traveling has to do with the fact that there aren't many black people. period. they are such a minute percentage of the population and the majority of that portion is lower class/poor so that explains itself.
