OK. I saw the image of the black women chanting together and started crying. I've been living in Thailand now for about 9 months working on health issues. The first issue was my anxiety. Unlike Christianity or Islam, Buddhism has ALWAYS opposed slavery, castes, and racial discrimination from the very beggining. Christians and Muslims often try to dismiss passages of their holy books which condone slavery and teach how to deal with slaves by appealing to "historical context". There is NO context that justifies slavery. It was as wrong then as it is now. The Buddha's teachings have always been right, not because of his authority, but because their principles have stood the test of time and can be verified and confirmed by logic, practical experience and meditation.

Buddhism to me is about learning from the enlightened one and less about ceremonies, worship, chanting and rituals. Buddha teaches us the truth and the path to experiencing that truth ourselves. I believe this can only be done by learning about Buddha's original teaching in Buddhist texts, especially Theravada Buddhist texts. It's also improtant to learn from senior buddhists who have read and understoodthe text as they can be quite abstract and difficult to understand.

1. What is the goal of Buddhism? - Freedom from suffering. 2. What is suffering (dukkha)? - (1) physical and mental discomfort, (2) transience of all conditioned reality, (3) unsatisfactoriness caused by desire and clinging to the idea of self, and (4) aggregates of clinging/birth/ body and mind, all which are themselves the cause of suffering, regardless of whether the mind has craving or not. 3. What is the cause of suffering? - Suffering is caused by (1) non-fulfillment of wishes, (2) craving, and (3) ignorance of the Noble Truths. 4. The path to freedom from suffering - The only path to freedom from suffering is the Noble Eightfold Path, or morality, concentration and wisdom. In brief it is mindfulness practice, or constant observation of one’s body and mind, until the mind gets insight into the truth that this body and mind are the root of all suffering. Only then will the mind eradicate craving, clinging (intense craving), the mental process of becoming (mental formation), rebirth (acquisition of sense-organs), and become liberated.

"Buddha" means the enlightened one and does not refer to particularly one's name nor identity. The fact that Buddha wants us to call him Buddha instead of his name Siddharta Gautama suggests that his skin colour, race, background is not important at all. The great thing about buddhism is that you can be a christian/islamic AND STILL BE A BUDDHIST. (This doesnt apply to Mahayana buddhism as thats almost a completely different religion compared to original buddhism which Theravada is the closest modern remnant). Under Theravada buddhism Gautama buddha at no point says "follow me or you go to hell". There are no gods in buddhism infact Gautama Buddha explicitly asks his followers to NOT worship him as an idol (ironically people have started doing this all over the place today which is technically wrong). All budhism asks you to do is to live a life worth living and to tame your ego. If anyone wants to learn more about this beautiful way of life consider travelling to SRI LANKA and researching.

@@mcdonaldchump5804 From a Buddhist perspective though I would say that does not matter. All things change, all being is associate with suffering and therefore these statues would be gone one day or another. These Islamic terrorists have done far worse than destroying ancient statues; they destroyed the lives of a generation to come. The teachings of the Buddha persist with or without these ritual sites.

Buddhism doesn't have a god but doesn't stops one from believing in god or gods like the Japanese, Koreans & Chinese. But even in India (also Indonesia in the past) Buddhists practice Buddhism but continue believing in Hindu gods & goddesses without any issue.

Indonesia in the past? Indonesia still has Hindu and Buddhist majority places such as the island of Bali and the Central Kalimatan region of Borneo island for Hindus and the Riau region of Sumatra island for Buddhists.
@NikhileshSurve3 жыл бұрын
@@Manoatevarua Yes there are places like Bali with Hindu majority but within Indonesia it's so small both in terms of territory & population whereas the muslim population in Indonesia is the biggest in the world, although I wasn't aware of Kalimantan/Borneo which is interesting. Are you Indonesian?

@@Manoatevarua Oh. Is the Hawaiian demography majority Hawaiian? Do Hawaiians (at least some if not most) still follow their ancestral religion?
@Manoatevarua3 жыл бұрын
@@NikhileshSurve No, we aren’t the majority of the demography in Hawaii. First you have Asians (mainly Japanese with some smaller groups such as Chinese, Koreans and Filipinos) Then you have Whites (mainly Americans) And then you have Polynesians (mainly Hawaiians with some smaller groups such as Samoans and Tahitians) Oh yeah, we still follow our ancestral religion, It’s called Huna and I’m a follower, there are many Heiau (Huna temples) scattered throughout Hawaii and ceremonies are still being perpetuated, especially during the Makahiki season which starts with the rising of the Pleiades and ends once they disappear. It’s the majority religion within the Hawaiian community. Christianity only arrived in the 1800’s so it’s relatively new and we Hawaiians are resilient when it comes to culture and traditions. The biggest religion in Hawaii is Christianity, followed by Buddhism and then Folk Religion (Huna).

Y'all talk about there being no god in Buddhism, but there's so much to unpack here. If you're gonna talk about the Lotus Sutra, you're gonna talk about how the Buddha has always and will always be here for all sentient beings. The Mahayana knows the third body, the Dharmakaya, and that the Buddha is "devatideva" or "God of gods." If Dharmakaya is our true nature, our true self, then that means that the LORD is inside each and everyone one of us. All of our brothers and all of our sisters are divine because the divine is in our soul, the divine IS our soul, and that is God. That is Buddha. That is waking up to Freedom. An an extra, you'll see that the Gohonzon has many names written, all friends and guardians of the holy Dharma. Among them is Shakra devanam Indra, king of heaven. In many instances, he is depicted in Asian art as dark: often blue or green, and sometimes even Black. It's a remarkable point of in history that the king of the gods himself is understood in this way.

Lord Buddha never said there is God or no God. He said its not important. He knows better why he said so. He said You have to work on yourself , it's more important. It's very unwise to declare what Buddha never said. You can find out yourself once you become enlightened if there is God or not , may be in this life or next.

It’s funny that still many Buddhists, no matter where they are from.. believe that there is no god. Buddha himself never said or made clear that there is no god. When asked such question, he just didn’t answer. What he did made clear is that we are responsible for our lives, good or bad. So Buddha wanted that people just focused more on making their own lifes better instead of relying on a divine power. That’s the main difference between buddhism and religions like christianity, islam and judeism. If someone tells you a story, your only choice is to believe or disbelieve. But believe or disbelieve is not experience, and only through experience you really know.

Buddhism is the logical solution, not only for African people, but for all of humanity. It is based on scientific reasoning and rejects all blind faith and dogma. However, historically speaking, Buddhism is fundamentally African Indian people's religion! Buddha was a Black Man!

@@jaxthewolf4572 - Did not say he was African per se, but that he was a Black man, in contrast to how he is often white washed. That is the point. And that African and Indian people practised Buddhism is the other point. Buddhism had spread as far as Europe, so this is not a very far fetched statement. But of course a great such as The Buddha belongs to the whole world, that is why UN declares Buddhist sites as World Heritage and people all over the world have drawn/sculpted him in their own image. Hope that clarifies things.
