SYNTHUSIA I was in Lome, Togo for a few weeks. It was a great adventure for me. When I boarded at the plane I knew it will be funny. There were about 5 white people and the black guy who had a seat next to me had some problem as he noticed I will seat next to him. He had no choice as the plane was full ☺ I don't know what the problem was as even talked a little bit later. When I got out of the airport all people were staring at me. At that time probaby I got the same feeling when black person comes to Poland ☺ during my stay at Togo I met kids who were called me white in their language. What I didn't like were prices which were different for white people at many places. I understand this country is poor but very often prices were as high as in the center of Paris. Sometimes it was possible to negotiate. The food was very tasty there. My visits at local restaurants were always surprising for people there as usually white guys don't go to such places. Only one time I was sick when I bought food at the street. I would like to go back there some day as I met there very friendly people.

I hope this will help. In Poland people don't have common understanding of racial differences and racism. There is no ideological concept of racism/discrimination like in USA or any other western country. 99% of people living here are ethincally white and that is why racism is not an issue here. Polish people can be hostile and rude towards foreigners just because they are not from Poland and race/color has nothing to do with this. For example there is more hostility against Ukrainians and Russians (ethnically white people) than against black people. This is because of our history (Russians were our "uninvited guests" few times in recent history). Obviously when you are black it is harder to blend in and everybody knows you are not a local. But we've never had any kind of racial politics (apartheid) or institutional discrimination against black people and people here don't care so much about the race. It is more like local vs foreign than black vs white. Poles will love you, take care of you and help you if you let them feel like you are their guest. We value hospitality very much. We have this saying "Gość w dom, Bóg w dom" (guest in home, god in home). Poles will hate you if they feel like you dominate them and don't act like a polite guest.
