BLACK GIRL GETS HAIR DONE IN KOREA again... but this time Braids lol
In this video, I, a black girl, get my hair braided at a local beauty shop in Korea. I am surprised at the hip length/ waist length natural hair and that I am getting my hair done in South Korea again lol. The Korean hairstylists' reaction to my hair was priceless! lol And she really took her time with my hair. It was a great experience
The inspiration for this video came from Chilo Talks who lives in Japan and MaryJane Byram who lived in China but is now a world traveler.
I haven't been to a salon in about 3 years due to some hair horror stories but I am excited to be doing this series where I get my hair done in Korea and try out different salons again, especially in a different country. Normally being black in Korea, or any country in Asia like China or Japan, finding a place to get natural hair done is like finding a needle in a haystack. Therefore, I decided to do an experiment! Especially since this salon is one of the best-reviewed salons in South Korea, so I am excited to see what they can do with my long natural 4c hair. The results were shocking and not the transformation I expected. I hope you watch and enjoy it until the end!
Sidenote: This hairstylist's salon is located in the center of Seoul which is a great location because if you were to visit it would be very accessible to go. Looking forward to seeing everyone's braids if you go tag me! :D

I know a lot of other cultures put on in front of cameras to look good in the black community "I love black people!" "I love black culture!" and they be straight up only trying to monetize off of proximity to us, but you can tell there was respect because she was attentive and interactive. And when she said "don't you guys sometimes wake up in the morning and do each other's hair?" 😭 that was sooo cute how she knew that and you could tell she really enjoys the community behind the hair. Genuine curiosity and appreciation for the differences of others is at the root of her craft and it shows. She said "I work cheap" as if she's proud when most would think it's demeaning, but it takes concern and empathy to know that not everyone has it like that and it's not taking away from your talent to CARE that not everyone has it like that. She put work into learning and overcoming her fear about doing black hair and seems so so sweet. I'm glad she went to the source and found some black people to study and shadow who weren't afraid to educate her and embrace her appreciation. I wonder if she's had any experience detangling and/or blow drying black hair as you said you did that yourself (which is understandable). Like did she ask you to or was that a personal call that you made? I would've loved to see a whole process but I understand if she's not as knowledgeable or simply not ready to do such things. Either way, this was a sweet video and y'all dialogue was so lovely. Good for her and I love this for you.

I wonder if she was this lady! This was so peaceful and addictive to watch and listen to, and I don't even speak Korean. Please make more videos with her! I could watch every style her masterful hands weave on your lovely head 😍 As a kid, my neighbor friend used to get microbraids and I remember it being a two day process, 6 hours one day, 4 hours the next. She did a great job ! I would like to know how she became interested in learning how to do our hair? Maybe she has black people in her family? There must be a sizeable number of black people living there for her to earn a living doing these styles. I know there are Africans and people from the Caribbean Islands living there. But seriously this lady must have close ties to black people to choose this as a career path. I know she likely does other hairstyles besides braiding, but she did NOT become that skilled overnight. This is an amazing question! Honestly I had such a good time conversating with her and unfortunately I couldn't keep everything for the video. But from what I understand she told me how when black culture started gaining a wave in Korea she decided she wanted to know more beyond that so she would watch videos about black hair care and also go to black salons to see and learn how to do black. She then made really close friends with people in the African community here in Korea and they kinda embraced her with their cultures which explains why she's very knowledgeable. Honestly though, she's really a gem and this whole experience blew my expectations 1000% over especially since I had the opportunity to talk about how black hair is treated in America and she was very receptive.

I was so nervous at first, fearing she'd mess up your hair. It was a relief to see it turn out so beautiful and that she did the braids so well. I'm happy for you!

The braids look beautiful! Your hair looked healthy and long, I am glad she made the braids nice an neat without having to be rough and super tight. The accessories are a nice bonus.

I love everything about your videos in Korea! I was deployed there in 2006 for months and fell in love with Korean culture. I don’t know if it’s still the same now, back then you had to know a person who knew a person in order to find someone that could take care of natural hair lol. I searched and found a place right outside of Seoul. I’ll never forget walking into the salon with my natural hair and walking out with the exact pixie cut I asked for, without having to relax or damage my curls at all. Pedi’s, food, and custom clothing were all amazing and you’re so right, the prices were extremely affordable!

She did that, I hope your rapping them in a silk or satin large scarf . They will last so much longer . She did that hunty!!!! I can’t believe she only charged $50.00 , huh in the USA, African Braiders charge you about $150.00 for that style. Keep that to yourself Sis, you look beautiful as usual.
