It was common for us especially drilling surface (approx 2k') to pull to the connection and drop to TD while circulation is continuously maintained to further assure that due to the loss of formation psi the cuttings are adequately circulated up-hole. The bentonite gel if adequately mixed serves to deposit an impermeable wall where h2o will not filter out or be allowed in from the formation. It lubricates, cools, and provides a buoyancy factor known as the "shear axis" (where the improved shear axis provides for greater efficiency to lift the cuttings up-hole). You can add CLS or LS to increase the "shear axis" without increasing its viscosity (thickness or density). That mud is the most important factor of any drilling operation especially for hydrocarbons. I worked derricks 6yrs. One double the rest triples, Lee C. Moore, IDECO full view, Standard, in-land drill barges in the La swamp. My slug was so good that when you broke the kelly connection you'd hear that heavy vacuum as the mud inside the string fell.

Hell yeah, we did straight 12 hr days and stayed over during moves or running casing..I did 2 week on 1 week off in Wyoming mostly and east coast area like wv and pa..

@@Yamaha38XCRacer they wanted me in Pennsylvania but I didn't go! We worked 7-12's but they paid us for 14 hours a day + $150 a day per diem! We worked 45 days on then 7 days off with a company called flowback equipment! We were just fracking! Easy money

I didn’t see that many good chain throws either during the whole series…doesn’t matter what drugs they are on..a good chain hand knows a good throw..

And seven wraps with the chain, too many unless you've been out the hole for a while or had been circulating with diesel based mud. Normally, 4 or 5 wraps was enough. That chain, off the tool joint, often damaged the pipe enough to incite a washout in the string. We had a set of air tongs on one rig that just sat there and never used.
