I remember watching it at the time because Ryder was one of the very few people left who wouldn’t / couldn’t play the media game. That weasel Evans thought he was his mate so could control him, but this is a lad from a Manchester council estate bombed out his nut on gear, so what did you expect? (slapping birds’ heads on his way down the stairs 😂) It pretty much ended live TV in the UK, and with it any chance of genuine rock’n’roll spontaneity.

I like how the gallery anticipated that final F-bomb of the performance and cut their mics. The very definition of shutting the gate after the horse had bolted. The sheer amount of failures here are staggering. Firstly, Chris Evans' rebelliousness of Channel 4's prior ban on Shaun Ryder being interviewed live on the show again by exploiting the loophole of having him sing live instead. Secondly, the gallery not cutting away from the performance after the F-bombs started to arrive in spades. Thirdly, Channel 4 not intervening and pulling the broadcast themselves. I remember Chris Evans closing that show by saying something along the lines of "Hopefully we'll be back next week." with an expression on his face which could only be matched by a condemned man on his way to the gallows. It was very possible that Ofcom could have pulled the show entirely, as they effectively did with The Word. Ultimately, the fallout was a hefty fine and a demand of a 15 minute delay on all future editions. Chris Evans was lucky, The Tube got pulled by the IBA for a few weeks after a single F-bomb from Jools Holland during a live trailer for The Tube.

Their performance was MAYHEM, ending up with band members throwing themselves, their guitars and a random chair about.
