Black hole mac tutorial - how to record internal audio on mac

Maybe you have previously used soundflower for recording internal audio, and then realized there are problems with audio flower and Mac OS Catalina. For me this solution really solved the sound flower catalina problem. Or maybe you are new to this and just need to record internal audio on your mac. Recording internal audio is useful for screen casts among other examples.
Anyway, I will in this tutorial go through how you install Blackhole virtual audio driver from Existential Audio
Down load latest release of Blackhole here on github:

Make a backup before you install or remove software like Blackhole.
Use Time Machine or my favorite Backblaze (affiliate link - 15 days free test!) www.backblaze....
Once black hole audio is downloaded. You must probably ctrl + click it to install it because Existential Audio is an unidentified developer.
Then just click your way through the installation process.
I will also go through the blackhole setup and how to set up aggregate device on mac. And how to set up multi-output device mac.
So know you know how to record screen on mac with audio!

@@gregrichardson2070 I do it because drivers are so connected to the system. You can’t just put them in the trash can if you don’t want them or if they will interfere with other drivers that you have. By making a backup you can just go back to how your computer was before.

If you go back to 'before', it must be a tedious exercise to either keep anything NON blackhole program related ? How would you do it unless you knew all the files/folders ect that Blackhole writes too on installation ?

That's exactly what the multi output device does. It combines two or more output sources, So you can play sound through Blackhole internally (to enable internal audio recording via blackhole too) and play sound through your speakers simultaneously.

I have trouble with this still even though I followed this tutorial and another one perfectly. When I follow the instructions on both (which are essentially the same) All sound completely stops on anything and it can't record what isn't playing....do you know how to fix this, I have heard to jump from output selection to another super fast to glitch it, but even that doesn't work for me 😭😭😭😭

I' happy I could help you recording internal audio with blackhole! I was struggling a bit with this myself before I realized that Soundflower is not compatible with Catalina, but even with Mojave Blackhole seems much more stabil than Soundflower, so I also "upgraded" my internal audio even on my other computers that don't run Catalina yet! @@gadgetsandtech Hello! I'm having trouble after 2 days. There have been problems like my headset microphone not picking up any sound. The output on my headset works fine. I found out that the input volume for my microphone goes to 0 for some reason. Even when I try to change the output volume, it automatically goes to the left (0). I'm now trying to reset the settings and remove Black Hole. It could be that it is not compatible with Mojave. :(

Have you tried to disconnect the headset and use only the microphone in the computer? Or borrow a different headset so you can be sure it’s not the headset itself that is the problem? What software do you use for the actual audio recording? I believe that QuickTime is the most straight forward program and good to use for troubleshooting. For me it worked in Mojave too, but every computer is different and there might conflicts with other softwares etc. if nothing else works and you need to uninstall blackhole, I have made a video about that too. I recommend that you back up your computer before you uninstall it though.

@@gadgetsandtech Yes, I have tried disconnecting my headset. I used a different pair of earphones to see if it was my headset that was acting up. The software I used to screen record was QuickTime. I am unable to completely remove blackhole (because I can't find it's path) but I deleted/uninstalled it by opening storage and looking through the applications. It doesn't cause much inconvenience for me now, thankfully. I have reset the PRAM on my mac for about 4 times because that's what I managed to get from google for help at that time. Currently, my headset's microphone successfully picks up sounds again! This was very important because I need it for my job. Thank you for all your help. It's unfortunate that it didn't work well for me.

That should be the same as buil-in output. Do you have headphones connected?

I did everything you said except I put my usb mixer instead of the build in. my problem is that I can't hear what I'm recording even though my computer is recognizing it. Hrrm, this shows us where to go and which things to click, but what exactly does any of this do? What are the aggregate and multi-output devices for? Which inputs/outputs do we want to check and for what purpose? Am I supposed to do something in my sound preferences or just confirm that they're there? What will selecting one of them in our recording software do? Why do some of them not show up for me in Quicktime? Trying to record from audio out, but my newly created devices don't show up in Quicktime.

What program did you use for the actual recording? Quicktime seems to be one of the more stabile ones. Did you get only the other sounds or both the other sound and the internal sounds? In quicktime, what source do you select for input?

I unfortunately believe you can't do that for any aggregate devices, that is in the nature of aggregate devices. I had problems with that during a Skype call. So when I'm not actively recording my screen recordings, I turn back my headphones as output source.

No that’s a drawback for me to. I can’t adjust the volume for my multi output, I need to adjust both sound sources separately, and then the will have the individual volumes within the multi output. It’s a bit annoying:-S

I have used it with Mojave without any problems. Maybe some specific versions of Mojave don't work with some specific versions of Blackhole.

I have watched a few Tubes on this software and cannot get it to record my voice audio in Catalina from headphones and screen record the meeting at the same time. I need to record the meeting and my voice, and have spent 2 hours without success. I appreciate the video anyway.

I did everything the way you explained, but it doesn't work. I testet it with QuickTime and with this video playing. but when I change the sound setting KZbin freezes and no sound is playing. what also is strange is, that I can't change the system volume when I choose multiple devices. but when I only select blackhole, then it works, but then I can't hear anything while recording.

I don't know why youtube is freezing. Have you tried different browsers? Maybe you can see in the activity monitor if something is acting strange. Regarding the volume, there is no way to change the volume on a multioutput device. It's an Apple thing. I've heard of some third party solutions for that, but I have never tried any myself. Let me know if you find a good soloution for that!

You don’t have to do that. It’s only if you want to be able to record both the system sound and microphone sound at the same time. Eg if you want to do record your speech at the same time. It’s kinda like a mixer. But if you don’t need any other sound, then just use blackhole as your input device.

Thanks for the video! Works but not STEREO. My Audio comes from Logic Pro X in STEREO but once it gets recorded with QuickTime using BlackHole then the audio turns into a MONO channel. The audio is STEREO in my master channel and it sounds STEREO while I'm screen-"recording/monitoring", once I check the file after recording it sounds MONO. Thanks for the video and all the help!

I hope you can solve it. Blackhole is only a virtual audio driver that enables recording internal audio on your Mac. Then the setup for the actual recording can be a bit different from program to program. Let me know if you found a solution for Scarlett 2i2 and Logic pro! Cheers!

@@gadgetsandtech I did! The pain that slows down the flow (if at all) is you have to change I/O preferences in Both Logic And Gig Performer. In Gig performer, after setting up through adding Black Hole 16 Channel app in Midi OutPut Setup, you go to Preferences and change your Sound Output device to Black Hole 16 Channel. THEN open Logic Preferences, in Sound, change In to Black Hole and leave Out to Scarlett (or your device). I have only recorded one song set up this way using Gig Performer dialed in to a very clean/little OD set up and must say, it sounds, on both recording and playback (the same!!) a little different than just using Scarlett as my play IN and my play OUT device solo. Just not sure yet... But it's getting there, thanks!

If you don’t need to record internal audio you can do this without black hole. Just connect your aux as a microphone and select that as a input source in your recording program.

I have never used blackhole for live streaming so I'm not sure. But a good start is to use blackhole and the microphone you intend to use in your aggregate device. It should work.

If It Still doesn't work make sure Quicktime player has access to the microphone System preferences > security and privacy > privacy tab > microphone > select quick time player

Then you select internal audio and not the aggregate device as source. The aggregate device is just made to mix the both. Cheers!

Can I record audio coming from youtube or netflix videos from safari or chrome browser? I am learning a new language and I would like to be able to record the sound of certain words in order to hear the accent through my space repetition software. This app looks great but not sure if I can record internal audio from browsers.

This video was made on my birthday, so let me please ask a question as a wish: I want to be able to change my audio source while broadcasting a youtube stream, switching between two different audio input sources. Is black hole the right tool for this? How do I have to configure it? (I tried, but no sound on the youtube stream)

I have not tried that, but I guess you would need to make two different aggregate devices and two different multi output devices. One “set” for each source you want to use. Good luck! Let us know if you find a way!

Great video. Could anyone confirm that the final export of your internal recording will always be in mono? I tried recording things in stereo, but unfortunately found out that the final export is in mono. Can I change this? Greetings from the Netherlands

I believe Blackhole supports internal recordings up to 16ch. I only use QuickTime myself for screen recordings for tutorials, so I haven’t really had need for more channels. But I believe it also depends on the specific software that you use for your actual recording. Let me know if you, or anyone else here, find a solution for your problem!

@@VanessaFlores Hi Vannymore, as of yet, I can only record internal audio in mono. Haven’t discovered how to record in stereo. Are we possibly overlooking something? Hopefully one of us can find a fix someday!

If you don't want to mix the audio with your microphone you can skip the steps with building an aggregate device and just select blackhole as input source. Cheers!

hi, thanks for this! really helpful. I had downloaded BlackHole and didn't have any idea how to make it work. I followed your instructions pretty exactly - question though - my sound choices (for ordinary internet browsing / media playing) now give me the choice of internal speakers, blackhole (by itself, not an aggregate), "built in + BH" and "built in mic + BH" - and I have to switch back and forth because if I leave it on the built in + BH output aggregate, I cannot control my computer volume. it greys out. So I need "internal speakers" for watching, "built in + BH" for screen recording. Have I done something wrong?

This works really well except when I use Logic Pro X to record my own music. The sound from Logic Pro X is recorded without problems in Audacity, but then I can not hear the sound I play in my external speakers. I think I have tried everything to make it work but it is hopeless.

Hello, I'm trying to use it to screen record on my Mac. I also use a Yeti microphone. Right now I have in my System Preferences for Sound: Input- (named Screen Recording) my Yeti microphone (listed two separate times, one for input and one for output- not sure why) and Blackhole 2ch. Output- (named Screen Recording w/comp) Built-in Output, Blackhole 2ch, and my Yeti microphone. Yet when I tried recording, the finished screen recording had no sound. What do you suggest I do?

Try to not use an aggregate device, but only black hole. The aggregate device will mix two sources.

Unfortunately the multi output devices can't be controlled in that way. Even not if you combine two other sources and not only when you use internal audio and blackhole.

That’s a very important question and everything has to judge for themselves whether they find it legit or not. Both when it comes to payed software or free software. I trust it because all the code was transparently available at github at the time I used it and in big projects in my experience there is always one or more programmers finding strange code. But I cannot leave any grantees that the code is not harmful and it a constantly developing project so the code can change from day to day.

I followed the steps exactly as you showed. But, when I record in Quicktime, the movies have no sound. Screen capture video is just fine, but the internal audio is not being recorded. I cannot figure out my mistake and why this is not working. Any thoughts? Thank you!!

Did you select your aggregate device or your microphone as source in QuickTime? There is a tiny drop down next to the recording button. Let me know if this helps?

Suppose I wanted black hole 16 channel to send 8 of its discrete channels to one eight channel dac via usb and send the remaining 8 channels to a second dac also connect to my pc via usb. How would I do that? Also, suppose I did not want Black Hole to record anything but merely to serve as a program which accepts a discrete multi channel output from something like Netflix or JRiver and pass it through to an external device like a DAC, could I do that, and how?

Thanks for your tutorial. I am trying to record using quicktime both internal (playback from a DAW like Reason) and external (voiceover on microphone through an Apogee Duet interface). When the microphone is active, the sound is routed to QuickTime only through the microphone and there is no Audio Signal through BlackHole. If I don't have the microphone active, then BlackHole does transmit the sound to QuickTime. Any idea why this might be? Can the Audio in a mac travel through multiple items in the Aggregate at once?

Yes black hole is only enabling routing the sound internally. I have used blackhole for screen recordings with internal audio using QuickTime. You can also do audio only recordings in QuickTime.

But for me setting up multi-output device sometimes doesn't work, audio won't play when I use it for output (the audio won't play, not no sound, the audio just won't start playing, the progress bar on youtube and itunes stays at 0:00), I just got it working by selecting built-in output first and then blackhole, which is weird and I'm not sure if it's the problem
