Agreed. I like many reviewers for headphones and IEMs, but for DAC/amps I go straight to WaveTheory first.

Thanks so much for this review. I just ordered an Aries based largely on your review, and the fact it’s pretty much the only headphone amp available with adjustable bass and treble settings. I’d rather turn knobs and get off the amp merry-go-round. It’s a little frustrating that one can learn more from your review than by reading the product description and (lack of) specs on the Black Ice site. I hope they let you keep it, you definitely earned it.

Although I think you undersold the MJ3 in your review of it, I couldn’t help but place an ARIES order due to your enthusiasm. I can honestly say that you are spot on, this is truly a magic box. I wouldn’t call the amp MJ3 level nor would i call the DAC Hugo 2 level just yet, but I’m still using stock tubes so that could change. However, considering all that this thing does and how good it sounds has me very happy with my purchase, great review wavetheory, i gave you lots of backlash over the MJ3 but as you can see I’m still very much a fan, continue to help the audiophile community the way that you do my friend. Thanks!

Do you think MJ3 is a better amp that the one in the black ice ? I have a Yggdrasil GS2 withe a MJ3 and I am wondering if the Black ice could be better, for less money. Please share your thought on this

The MJ3 sounds better than the amp on the Black Ice Aries to my ear. However, I’d choose the Black Ice Aries as a complete system over the GS2/MJ3 stack. The Aries is really fantastic as a complete system, it’s the first piece of gear I’ve had on my desk that i will never sell. However, he forgot to mention that the Aries will require a DDC, the USB implementation isn’t good at all really. I use the same Singxer SA-6 as Wavetheory, the COAX and Optical coming from the SA-6 make the USB port on the Aries a joke (it’s that serious). Also, the Aries is just plain brilliant, it’s the last piece of gear you’ll need dude. The MJ3 is the better amp to my ear, but just as amps, they are in the exact same league. Apples and oranges really. It’s just that the Aries offers tons more. You’ll be at your desk forever messing with this thing.

@@quawn0418 thank you for the report. Yes this unit don't have the good USB implementation of the Yggdrasil, wich don't need DDC. I am very curious to hear this thing. I listen with He1000se and i should be happy to regulate the tone with eq

@ if you happen to purchase one, grab a pair a linlai elite 6sn7 tubes and pop them both in. The unit won’t close because the tubes are huge as wavetheory mentions but this doesn’t bother me at all really, i love to run mines completely open at times due to this “problem”…doesn’t affect the sound at all and the internals are beautiful

Black ice formerly jolida is a company I’ve owned multiple tube amps for my 2 channel system. I’ve recently had the BI F35 and previously a Jolida JD 1000p. Loved both products..

I hate I loathe steamers… I bought an ultra rendu but just use it with Spotify. The whole bumble upmp or room wnd point crap pisses me off to no end. I don’t build pcs I don’t want a complex streaming setup where I have to read Hebrew translate into Aramaic then convert to Latin just to stream a song. I’m no fan of Spotify to it works with ultrarendu where nothing else just does. I imagine this streamer would piss me off to no end. Wiim and BlueSound just worked easy peasy.

Perhaps the Burson conductor 3xgt and Hugo is working on a tt3. Even then both options will be missing the eq and and streamer capabilities.

The DAC in the Aries is superior to the BF2 by a considerable margin, IMO.

Great review, great amp, also L0rdGwyn Aegis please, endgame tube amp DIY $2K, prebuilt $3.5K~$4K, also some headfiers said this is the best amp for Tungsten.
