You are absolutely right. Location makes all the difference with people's experiences in Germany. But then again, I also read in the new today tat a man faced racist encounter in Berlin (in the Eastern part: again location) so sometimes you just never know.

Why should smaller towns or cities be more racist? It's just big city hipster bashing on the non big cities. As if the people there aren't connect to the world of today and hunt everyone foreign looking with sticks and candles. Most violence and clashes, higher crimes rates are all in the bigger cities.
@marsa742 жыл бұрын
Especially the smaller cities in Germany took a larger part of refugees, proportionally, and there are no signs showing more or less racist behavior. Nowadays, people from rural areas have studied in some larger city and traveled around the world pretty much like their counterparts from the metropolitan areas. I guess you'll find more people in Munich who have never left their hometown than in Bad Wildungen. Racism grows where people are dissatisfied with their own situation. Then they start to blame "someone" and, of course, always the government.
@jennyh40252 жыл бұрын
I would guess that as well, size and economics matter. The bigger and „richer“ a city or town, the less racist,I would assume - at least that’s my experience (well, my friends‘).

I can so see the scene with the child in the supermarket! 😂 German staring is usually not racist, because we do it to everyone, who looks interesting in any way (actual looks, fashion, movement, anything) or just to entertain ourselves by thinking up stories about their life.

I think you dropped a clanger (I hope this is the right translation). One of the most common reasons for a neighborhood fight is noise nuisance from neighbors. Hard to tell if it really was racism or just anger. I hope I can get all my thoughts into words. Especially old houses have thin walls and you can hear your neighbors. Footsteps or loud music for example. If you want you could look into "Nachbarschaftskrieg" or "Nachbarschaftsstreit". You find a lot of videos here about war between neighbors. From my personal experience I know how people feel if the neighbor is too noisy. If you have a lot of stress at work because of bad working climate for example and you only have these two free days and which one day is normally just sleeping and the neighbor is too noisy I would be angry as well. Of course if it only happen in one case it is something you can talk properly through so that the person understands. Many employees here are overworked in Germany if I consider this social issue. This is of course no excuse for rude behavior. Sometimes you not only have to find a good arpartment but good neighbors as well. Something you don't find in the discription. Especially workers or pensioner like a quiet neighborhood. People in the age between 20-30 are still in the age for party and fun. I could write more and with more detail but the YT comment section is not good place for a detailed conversation/explanation.

Hi Waleo, I just came across your channel and after watching your bubbly personality in this video I decided to join in. First of all - the German staring. We seem to be famous for it without being aware of it. Many expats talk about this and I must say it was news to me. If you have'nt already watch the video Hayley Alexis did about this: YT/watch?v=nQ7wU5jY0R0. I think she really nailed it there. And besides - I'm afraid you're going to have to deal with it due to the fact that you're obviously a very pretty lady (NO, not coming on to you here in any way. Would be kind of creepy if I, as a 56y old geezer, would do that)😁. And in regards to your ex neighbours I think you're right in assuming that that was no racism. Just nasty people with no manners who think the world spins around them and them alone or as we say in Germany "Mit dem D-Zug durch die Kinderstube gerauscht". When it happened to me one time that the father of a good friend would simply ignore me I turned the tables on him by being extra friendly to him because I knew it drove him nuts and he didn't know how to respomd to it...🤣🤣. I'm glad that you didn't experience more hate or racism and surely enough Berlin as a multi cultural city plays a role in this. Unfortunately you will meet racism all over the world. Mostly from narrow minded people who never travelled outside their country. It's true what they say that "Reisen bildet". Somewhere along the evolution of mankind white people decided that they were superior to people of different skin colours. Totally oblivious to the fact that mankind originated in Africa and spread througout the world from there. Hey, we're all the same! There are good people and bad people in the world - the colour of your skin is in no way any indicator to which group you belong to!

I live in Brandenburg and I'm black. Honestly, it's really, really bad and I feel really, really bad here. The amount of racism that i faced here is huge. It's clearly not a place to live if you're a person of colour. That's why I'm in Berlin almost every day to spend some time until I find somewhere to live. It's really very serious. I know that Germans aren’t that bad because i have a lot of German friends in Berlin, but if i wouldn’t, i think that i would have hated the Germans just because of those bad experiences. (It’s just based of my own experience and i just wanna say that we all have different experiences)

I live in Hamburg and an honest question: I once saw a black woman that looked just fabulous due to her dress and just her figure. Obviously, I and a lot of other guys stared, because she just looked great, and (in a predominantly white country) stook out as "exotic". My point is: Obviously people would strare, but for a "good" reason, but this be misconstrued to be racism?

Germans don't stare! They look, they watch their surrounding! 😉If you want to know what staring is, I have an obvious, unusual handicap, lots of people stare at me here. Let them look, I'm the star, they're just curious because they don't see that often, that's human, that's not a problem for me. It only gets uncomfortable when they stare at me stupidly, with their mouths open and their jaws dropped, and sometimes even run after me. But that rarely happens! I find children on public transport interesting. You can often see pure curiosity in their faces because they've never seen anything like it before. You can talk to them and have interesting conversations. I think that's important sometimes, the children feel that I'm a normal person who they don't have to be afraid of!

Hi! I think, a main issue is, that germans are all in all mostly conservative thinking and acting people. Therefor, changes in social or public society take their time to be established here. For long lime, germany was not seen as a country, were immigration takes place ( instead of it already HAS BEEN such a place since the 50ties, when the german government started camaigns to invent workers from other countries - first especially italian, greek, spanish and slavic people....later mainly from turkey - there was a big lack of workers because many german workers had been killed in world war 2.) Thecgerman government and the german people expected the so called "Gastarbeiter" ( guest workers) not to stay in germany. They thought, that after a few years they would return to their homelands.... - but they didn't!! Most of them stayed because of the - compared to their homelands - better living conditions in germany and also invited their families to join them here! The german government and people refused to see that ( new conditions always take a lot of time to establish in germany, brcause the germans are very traditional oriented in their thinking...) and so everydays life is still not totally reflecting the indeed high number of immigrants/people from other countries that meanwhile had come to germany in the way, that is reflecting this phenomenon . During the last decades, things have become better, but germany is a very buresucratical concepted country and so things need time to change to the better....germans aren't bad people, but sadly they tend to stuck to their traditions and are not very flexible, when it comes to urgent needs in a world that changes faster and faster. Perhaps this stay help you understanding, why life in germany still needs a lot of changes towards taking more care for the situations of its immigrants! In addition it makes a difference, where in germany you are! You shall not forget, that the eastern part has a complete different history then the west! East germany was a part of the soviet block until 1989 and tgerefor was complete isolated until the Berlin wall fell. The rural living east german people didn't experience the presence of peoples from other places ( except some russians) until tge 1990ties - especially not of colored people - and they stiill are suffering from the fact, that their general living conditions are not as good as tgey are for people in the western part of germany: So its a double issue fir them, when they are confronted with immigrants with another color of skin: First they use not to know such people living in their neighborhood and tend to stereotype them following wrong images from yesterday - and second they fear to get into something like a "social and work competition" with immigrants .... people, who's causes for their leaving of their home countries they don't really understand, because they actually don't know, what problems use to exist in those for them "strange" countries where the immigrants come from. For 40 years they hadn't the opportuity to leave germany and experience life in other places of the world. And last its sad, but true .... there are certain politicians, which are well recognized especially in eastern germany, that use to discriminate and diffame immigrants and refuguees to get poltical advantages from the scepticism of eastern german people against "strangers" from other countries. The problematic situation of high poverty in rural parts of eastern germany gives those politicians a perfideous pretext, to use prejustices for their purposes.... Espeially "problematic areas" for immigrants are generally the borderlands to polands and czechia, the "*ostsee"- coastlands of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern and Brandenburg because that are very poor areas and they generally are not very open to strangers, because of the extremly negative working infra-structure they often have to live from tourism and are not very lucky with that.... The extremly northeast parts are very "special" because of the bad infra-structure and poverty there. They have a large tendency to seperate themselves from strangers, even other germans, are often very "backwards minded" and most of them have never left their own territory and so they aren't experienced in relations to people from outside! - i know that, because i lived there for some years! - Its sad, but it is how it is.... Generally, germans are often not educated to show their emotions, especially the older people. "Work" is a very "important" thing here and many people define themselves only through how hard and successful they "work". Its sadly our mentality and part of the german mindset and its hard to hold against it! For me, color of skin or where people come from, doesn't count! - We are all humans and have to respect each other!! I like to say to you and all other people that like to come to germany, a sincere *WELCOME!! GERMANY NEEDS YOU AND HAS TO TREAT YOU AS FRIENDS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!* Hope you're doing well! - Greetz!

Talking with smiles and trying to hide recism and discrimination is not a solution. I have much experience not welcoming people. And they don't tell you directly that does not mean recism does not exist. German people condemned that exists in reality. Picture what you see and reality both are different. Many times I take initiative to start integrating but 80% of the people I saw don't like to integrate because I am a foreigner. Only 20 % of foreigners were lucky enough because they met some good people.
