So I am born and raised in Hamburg and I have to say I still can't get enough of it's beauty. Just going from A to B is so good for the soul because it's always so pretty and interesting. I also think that architecture wise it's more divers than Berlin because you have so many different types of houses and quartier structures and it all varies a lot from each other. Also the City has so many nice areas that are perfect daytrip material like the Elbe Beach, the Vier und Marschlande, the Fischbeker Heide and so on. I wish you would have gone to a real neighborhood like Eimsbüttel, Altona, Winterhude etc. because eventhough the hafencity is pretty, it's not where Hamburgers live... it's like visiting Berlin and only going to the reichstag, Brandenburg Gate and Checkpoint Charlie... it's just not where the City "lives". Hamburg has a Huge Alternative Scene too with the Gängeviertel, Wilhelmsburg, Schanze, St. Pauli and you didn't even mention these areas. I don't mean this in a bad way but you totally didn't see Hamburg in all of it's shades unfortunately. I hope you had a nice Visit and will return with more time :)

As someone who comes from East Germany (with Berlin pretty close) and has chosen Hamburg to be their chosen home: never leave! XD Hamburg is AWESOME!! ❤ And I miss it so much so, since I am sick and living in the East again... And every time I'm in Berlin everything feels just so gross to me. And honestly: I know a lot of Berliners who say, they consider moving too, or outsiders, who say, they really wouldn't want to live there. Especially since I have experienced Hamburg I can agree. No comparison to me. ✌️ Hamburg is just 👌👌💯
@publicminx Жыл бұрын
lets be a bit more realistic. last year (2022) 75000 ppl moved to Berlin (more than the +/- 65000 in 5 years (!) to Hamburg). Every year more ppl move to Berlin than to Munich AND Hamburg AND Frankfurt AND Cologne together. In the end of the day its more like the question if you want live in the big hotspot metropolis then its Berlin (just like it is London in UK, Paris in France, NY in the US, Vienna in Austria etc.). If you want avoid that and rather prefer smaller but still big cities with this or that specific charm then its rather Munich, Hamburg, Cologne/Bonn/Duesseldorf, Frankfurt or Leipzig/Dresden. In the end of the day for most ppl a city with a population over 500k - 1 Mio. is big enough and has enough diversity for an everyday life, especially if it is not just in a high developed country like Germany but also in a culture like Germany with its many diversity of things one can do for every kind of interest. In difference to most cultures/countries/cities in the world thats a huge plus, because most have only some rather superficial things to offer. Lagos, Istanbul, Mumbai etc. are for instance huge cities but masses of things like the Tango scene is much smaller than in Hamburg, Cologne or Munich (not to mention Berlin who has much more galeries than all of those cities together inclusive Tokyo and Mexico City). Same goes for interests in Life Role Playing, Yoga, Table Tennis, Chess, Outdoor activies, all kind of Arts, more diverse music scenes and so on. It is in general a huge difference between countries with a VHS/Club/Vereins-and do it yourself mentality like Central and Northern/East Europe (plus USA/Canada etc.) to most of the rest of the world. Many ppl are even not aware that 'wandering around' was for most cultures unknown. That expanded especially from countries like Germany ...

Hamburg: nicer people and what's the most important that I researched it's also safer then Berlin. But nothing in north compares to Stuttgart, Munich, south when it comes to safety...Should you sacrifice food options for that? Yes. And I completely get it: l lived for 14 yrs in NYC (queens) and enjoyed the extensive and amazing menus in restaurants with very different cuisines: grilled fish, grilled meats, veggie options, vegan-gluten free options (greek, Indian, Mexican) but when l moved to Orlando, FL I was shocked with a lack of options, polar opposite off NYC. Even a nice restaurant has a small menu with burger and fries as a fancy dinner option which is unheard of in NYC! Horrible! Now I like to eat at home and just join friends for drinks. It saves money though 🤦♂😄 But Orlando is sooo clean and people here actually want to hang out! Social life is much better. P.S. you are so funny - l adore you ! 🤗

Berlin is much cooler and really a cosmopolitan city! The feeling of freedom and diversity is worlds more pronounced there and you just have the feeling that everything is possible. Everything is much bigger there and just a lot more going on. Of course, Hamburg is also great, no question about it, but just too well-behaved and normal and as a visitor you have explored the city after 3 days at the latest. Although Hamburg is also big, it seems as if a lot of small towns have pitted against each other. When you get off the subway in Berlin, no matter where, you experience a lot of hustle and bustle everywhere. Of course, Berlin is twice as big.
@Danisachan Жыл бұрын
Yeah, and twice as dirty for it... I personally prefer the fun activities and the culture in Hamburg much more. But that's my opinion. (And if you have experienced all Hamburg has to offer in 3 days, you DEFENITELY missed a lot of things!)

RE: food. I've had very good meals in Berlin at Vietnamese and at German restaurants. But in Hamburg the fish restaurants and fish stands are excellent. There is also a section with Portuguese restaurants in Hamburg. I prefer Berlin to Hamburg, because I find it more vibrant, but Hamburg is a beautiful and greener city. (I am an American who visits relatives in both Hamburg and Berlin periodically.)

So what was your decision? I am living in Berlin but thinking about Hamburg. I am missing the sea and the fresh air and the beauty .Berlin is so dirty everywhere....but yes the food is so good and also the bars and culture scene there is so much to do. But rents are horrible and ugh I can't decide.

I once met a guy from cologne who thought hamburgers are more friendly... I think it's always very up to there you live and what your interests are. I went to Cologne this summer and have to say it wasn't as "happy" as I expected. Yes it was nice but not such a big jump from Hamburg I thought. The biggest difference in how open and communicative people are, did I feel in Istanbul. Wow everyone looks you in the eyes and greets you! Malaga was also super incredibly from the people. But I mean if you have sun all time that's understandable I guess :) Anyway I am super happy that you found you place and cologne is a great city too! I probably will come back sometime for sure.

I guess your are totally wrong with your „International“ Point. Maybe there are More foreign people on the streets in Berlin (Tourist, trevellers, expats, refugiees, whatever) than in Hamburg. But Hamburg is a merchant City for centuries and it has connections to every place in the world, places you never heart about. But these connections are a professional kind, Not these „in your Face“ walking people on the streets.

@@WaleochroniclesI totally agree. The Hauptbahnhof area and St. Georg were rather questionable, including safety-wise. But Barmbek feels very safe, even at night, and Blankenese has the feel of safety. Borgfelde and Hammerbrook are more industrial, but I never felt unsafe there except one night in Hammerbrook; the streets were almost empty and the whole area is industrial buildings. But they did not give me the same insecurity as Hauptbahnhof. But what I love about Hamburg as a whole is how green it is, even in Hammerbrook thanks to the canals that often have birds and trees around them.

@publicminx Жыл бұрын
what many Germans (actually also non-Germans) dont understand is why Berlin has this world class food scene. One has to understand that Berlin became a kind of 21. century global food startup hotspot over the last decade which created an explosion of diversity. It is NOT anymore about just international kitchen added to the local one and a bit additional creativity diversify things. Thats how diversity was associated in the 20. century and most ppl in the world have still this stereotype in mind. But the food scene in Berlin is already one step further and its now more about concepts, mixing, composing new food combinations additionally to the classic/traditional international/local food. Same is with how drinks are now created. It went more and more to a individualized mentality among the classics. Its the result of Food Culture of the world meets Startup mentality. Apart from that, I personally like the different local fish food traditions in Hamburg/Bremen etc. a lot - and much more than most other fish food cultures in the world.
