I am currently brewing a black IPA in the fermzilla. I was originally going for a hazy IPA, but I thought I'd give roasted barley a try at 5%. Maulted naked oats at 9% and weat malt at 90%. The combination of hops I have used is galaxy, mosaic, and Citra. Yeast strain is New England ale (dry) My OG was 1.057 and targeting to hit FG at 1.010. Your content is very inspirational, and I love watching you guys talk in depth. Best channel on this platform ❤🍻

I'm intrigued now. Like Mike I thought I would never try a black IPA but now you forced me into it. Let me know how you do on a competition. 😊👍👍

I got mid-high 30s on this beer. It wasn't as fresh when the judges got it. They were looking for American "C" hops. Meh. - John

Great viewing again. There seems to be little point in a black IPA in just looking black, the colour has to be a echo of a flavour. Or just drink a regular IPA in the dark. In the past British beers were either brewed to be served young (mild) or aged (keeping), I think the old terms were X or K with X-XXX and K-KKK representing the strength. I imagine a black IPA would be closer to a stout (just meaning strong) mild (meaning drink young) and it might have been termed dark. But more importantly, someone would have bought a pint cos they just liked it So glad you brewed a beer you're happy with.

Hi, thanks for the great video! I would like to get your thoughts on whether beer no2 could be brewed at a lower abv, say 5.5%? Would scaling the hop additions to keep the same bu/gu ratio work? It’s just that I’ve brewed a lot of high abv beers lately, but I am intrigued by the complexity of the beer!
@BrewDudes2 жыл бұрын
I think that beer number 2 would work well at the lower ABV. Reduce the base malt a bit and you will be in a good zone. - John

I've wondered about a black ipa hopped like a hazy, and fermented with voss or hornindal to push the citrus (or the sacc trois for "regular"yeast). I think there could be room for a more west coast version and a "juicier" version, perhaps one could be black ipa and one CDA.

If you go back to the English ale yeast experiments, WLP013 is definitely worth a try. I am working through my own experiments and this one is one of the favorites to become the “house English yeast”.

What would be the closest UK equivalent grain bill so I can attempt recipe 2. Some I can get others I have no idea how to find? Help

I would look for an English pale malt as my base and look for some debittered black malt. The chocolate and the crystal should be easier to find for you. - John

The only Black IPA I've had a great hop aroma and was bitter but as it warmed it was roast and toasty. Good beer but I don't think I'll buy another black IPA. Not really an appealing style to me. P.S. Love the jar of destiny idea

Black IPAs are awesome! I disagree with the idea that they are West Coast plus color. Personally, I like crystal malts in IPAs... I'm not sure right now if the hate is distinct from actual preferences. Just look at the popularity of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clones for example.
