@@bobuscesar2534 you really need to read the codexes and novels and stop getting your lore from memes mate lol. Each "Black Crusade" had a goal which Abaddon achieved leading to the 13th. This lore dates back to the 90s and the second Chaos Codex. Then in codex Eye of Terra it goes into detail about each goal achieved which came out in 2003. As for your comment about Abaddon being better than Horus clearly your not upto day on recent lore but no worries Jonny is here to help. Abaddon has done more damage to the Imperium with not even a third of what Horus. Horus with 9 FULL LEGIONS, half the Machanicum and half of the Imperium backing him and still he failed. The ONLY thing Abaddon had over Horus was time which he has used like a master. So again when did Abaddon fail?

One of the greatest strategic and logistical mind in the whole of 40k lore Roboute Guilliman launched a Crusade that lasted 112 year complete with new and improved Space Marines complete with new and improved wargear and deemed it a fail because after Abaddon destroyed Cadia and split the Imperium in half and covered it with warp storms Guilliman seen that there is too many wars on too many fronts again a near unlimited enemy (daemons) to win against. And who managed to full this off over the course of the Long War with 13 strategic strikes (Black Crusades to the Imperium) oh yes you guessed it ABADDON. "Failaddon" meme lovers = how far some of the 40k community have fallen lol.

There weren't really picks following Horus's death, because it was a free-for-all after the Scouring, so literally anyone was fair game since they were all his sons. But, if we're following the old legion chain of command, Abaddon was indeed the 1st pick; he was first captain.

After the heresy Abbadon wanted nothing more to do with the Son's of Horus, it's power struggles or the wars with the other legions. He was just sick, tired and disillusioned with it all. So he hijacked the Vengeful Spirit and set course for deep into the Eye of Terror to live in solitary exile. It was only after much in fighting, getting their asses handed to them by the Emperor's Children and Fabius Bile creating the clone Horus that the Son's sought out Abbadon to return to the legion and lead them. Or it could be Abaddon leads the initial attack into Imperial space, accomplishes a specific goal, then lets his rivals keep going while Abaddon returns. The rivals get defeated, weakening or killing them and strengthening Abaddon by absorbing their remnants. The Imperium rejoices at defeating Abaddon, but in reality Abaddon accomplished his goal and had already left.
