Black Lightning Season Finale Was Bad and Here's Why

Salim Akil wanted to take a back seat to allow storytellers, artists,and staff members who did not get a chance to make their mark on the previous seasons of Black Lightning to see where their talent can take them. I understand his reasons but it hadn't been for the fact that season four began with Jefferson Pierce looking over Detective Henderson's grave, then it would have a season that out of continuity

What could have happened was that when Khalil lost the kill order, TC could have just been at his side all the time and tell Khalil that there is a friend he wants Khalil to meet. Boom, Khalil and Jennifer back together again. Done. I was kind of upset that Khalil's story just ended there and nothing else happened

This is what they should have done on the final episode: - The Pierce family's proper happy reaction to the old Jen coming back - Painkiller vs. Tobias rematch - Lala and Khalil fighting Tobias at the same time - Cutter returns. She help Lala and Khalil fight Tobias. Tobias getting the upper hand on them - Thunder, Lightning, and Wylde take turns fighting Tobias - Black Lightning vs. Tobias. Their fight goes longer - Tobias gets defeated. Painkiller wants to rip out Tobias's spine but Khalil talk him out of it - Tobias gets exposed as a criminal and he goes to prison - Lala dress like a cop and he says the words "I told you before, I'm gon finally kill your ass" then he shoots him multiple times - Double wedding between Jefferson & Lynn and Anissa & Grace - Khalil getting the kill order erased without losing his memory of the Pierces but he still has Painkiller's abilities - Lala kill Destiny

I've read "Naomi" and it's a good comic, but she's no BL. I guess you can only have one Black led comic book show at a time. Guess I still have " Falcon & Winter Soldier"... LOL

If you notice in the last episode that China McClain and Cress Williams were never in the same scene together. They used stand in's , and the way it was filmed. Trust and believe if everything was cool, we would have gotten a better filmed reunion at the end. I get it the cw is going younger. Black lightning was the least popular character on its own show time to cut their losses. Overall the show was more miss than hit I think. And the finale was like the last chance to make up for all that and they failed. The final scene. The family get together. Arguably the most important scene in the finale and maybe even the whole show and what did they do. A family get together with no heartfelt expression of love for each other. Everyone pretty much keeping each other beyond arm's length. NOT ONE embrace or hug between them. Especially with Jen who just returned. Specifically with her dad. She comes back from the dead and no celebration at the fact that she's alive. No reunion scene at all between them. Especially with Jen and Jeff reuniting. Jeff and Lynn's engagement is done OFF SCREEEEEEEEEEEENNNN!!! Then when it's announced the kids BARELY react to it. The family gathering done from a distance between all of them. Literally dancing in their chairs instead of getting up. Like were they social distancing on set? If it wasn't appropriate to shoot it properly with them being closer to each other then probably should have just not done it. That show. I defended it and praised it but after season 3 and 4 I kinda wish I didn't watch it. Season 2 wasn't A plus but that Khalil arc was legendary and one of the best things the show ever did. Maybe the best. Waste of potential. Had better production quality and direction than most CW shows before it it seemed like in the form of consistent acting, longer takes than usual Cw shows if I'm not mistaken, and quality cinematography. It's presentation was that of a streaming show. It should have been one. On Netflix or Hulu or HBO Max or something. It might have been better. But it probably would have needed a better showrunner and writers as well. Like Cheo Hadari Coker who ran Luke Cage. Just imagine if this show had gotten the proper care it needed.

I mean the only thing I wanted was Tobias to die but even that felt kind of silly. Also, have you noticed how the actors China and Cress had NO SCENES together at all? Makes me wonder if there was some BTs drama. And Lynn has been written horribly since the beginning. Plus with Black Lightning over, we no longer have a Black led Superhero show which sucks. Plus, having no Painkiller is disappointing as well. Let's just hope Naomi is done well. As for Superman & Lois, you can tell they give a shit about this show because it has a HUGE budget plus better writing.

From what I recall about Khalil being cured of the kill order,TC explained to him that all of his memories of Pierce family would be erased,he didn't say anything about him completely losing his memory of everything including special abilities.

Yeah, the last season and especially the last episode was kind of a let down. The whole thing with Jefferson wallowing in self pity for half the season was the worst part and was really off for his character. And that whole Jennifer doppelganger thing was weird but intriguing at the same time. They could've fleshed it out to be so much better. But I'm sure that Covid and China quitting the show had a lot to do with the low quality of the final season.

What bothered me the most is Jeff's no kill rule because Gambi killed proctor and a lot of other people for his family without caring or even confronting him about it, so at the very least why not just ask Gambi to kill Tobias or when Anissa threw a tank at a helicopter killing whoever was inside, he never mentions it. Jeff is very inconsistent caring about murder, so it was obvious the plot was gonna drag this out to the season finale despite having no real reason why they can't finish him off now. It's was just so frustrating.

Hell, the worst casualties along with the series being left with a kinda Spectacular Spider-Man style ending but not done correctly is that the Painkiller series was canceled by the CW- the Shadow Board and Lady Eve are still out there, Akashic Valley still hasn't been delved into along with O'Dell's daughter Akil had plans for a potential seasons five and six which would have explored a Black Joker in the series and show where the Outsiders and Lala could have gone. Oh and let's not forget that he also had plans for crossovers with the BL series towards the rest of the Arrowverse's shows

Also, Wallace Smith and Marvin Jones III wanted to reprise their respective roles- Detective Shakur and Tobias Whale in the Painkiller spinoff series. Darn we'll never get to see all of that. Though, it looks like I'll have to get more Black Lightning in the comics and perhaps the Young Justice TV series

Gravedigger new Black Lightning and Lightning were related to him. It wouldn't been that hard to discover their true identities by exploring his family tree. Gravedigger is a threat/possible ally that was left never explored further. In my opinion Gravedigger would have made a better villain than Tobias in the final season or the least they could made the last season longer to wrap up storylines. It's like they forgot Brandon existed at all they didn't even mention his whereabouts, to tie-up that loose end.

The writers had plan for a season 5 and possible 6th. But I think there was drama behind the scenes might be the reason as to why the show did not continued on. This season as a whole was chopped together. The lack of advertisement did not do the show any justice.

A 2 hour finale episode would have been nice but we along with CW have been cheated overall by the Warner/AT&T/HBO Max agenda. The show had so much untapped (money) potential and could have capitalized off of the black culture with entertainers and everything. We never got the Static Shock spinoff either. Oh well....

@@karlsingh9076 The first few episodes were solid, but once we saw Tobias moving certain pieces on the board in terms of him taking political power I could already tell it was too large of a storyline for the amount of episodes they already announced for that season. So I knew maybe four episodes in that they were not gonna have enough time to finish all these plot points that they left open. Especially with the whole situation regarding Jennifer.

i felt bad it was getting hate about how bad it was but heres the real reason it was bad it was rush because im not sure but i think they were filming the mid season and then they just told them it was the last season so they just rewrite it if this wasn't the last season the outsiders were be made that dark side of jeff would be explored and etc but you know the show was dropping rates so cw just didn't care right now cw writers are on something and just turning into wb so im just happy they got to finish it poor black lightning deserve better then rush and a last season so the season gets a pass because the og season would have been better im not saying this is why everyone hates it but this covers up why it was bad

I totally agree with you on this. The final season of Black Lightning 🌩️⚡ was pretty bad it was horrible. Times were very hard in real life in 2020-2021. The pandemic ruined lots of things in the couple of years. I loved watching the 1st 3 seasons of Black Lightning 🌩️⚡. When I 1st saw the very 1st season episodes of this show I was like this could be the New Unsolved Mysteries Show it did remind me of the original Unsolved Mysteries Show with Host Robert Stack in it. Netflix did do a reboot of Unsolved Mysteries Show and it really sucked it was awful. I met Thunder ⛈️⚡ Nafessa Williams back in 2019 at a Comic Con Show. She's very nice to meet. Nafessa Williams plans on doing more Comic movies and shows in the future hopefully another DC or maybe Marvel comics

The writing sucks, they made him look like an average superhero. The entire show never left the hood. They never did any crossover. They fought the same villain for 4 seasons. Tobias Harris , only had average super powers, he can take a beating, let me stop, he is garbage. Black lightning in the comic was more powerful. The show was too political. The flash fought alot of different villains, arrow was more entertaining, Supergirl, fought different villains.

I was disappointed with the whole final season. Your right it was rushed and when they announced PainKiller as a spinoff I wasn't feeling it even though he was a good character. I think season 3 was the better of all the seasons and had the makings of doing something better or a real potential spinoff The Outsiders which it basically was. Too bad they never brought in Static Shock either.

All I wanted was for Khalil & Jen to get their happy ending. It would have been lit if they could have done a “1 year later.” Maybe Gambi & his love interest having a wedding, but he’s having cold feet because he’s scared that he won’t be as accessible to the the pierce family when they need him because he will have his own home to worry about. Somehow (maybe while Jen picking up the wedding cake) Jen and Khalil cross paths while he coming back to his home town. All he technically forgot was the pierce family. He didn’t forget his whole life. Khalil could have had a run in with Jen, and all his memories came back of her and her family. The reason his memories came back was because of how strong his love for Jen was. This man had a whole fight with painkiller when painkiller was injecting Jen with that poison. He fought P.K and won while he was at a low point in his life. Keep in mind that he has to be way stronger now because he literally made painkiller his b***h. Painkiller came out when he wanted him to. All I’m saying is that Jen was like Khalil’s drug. They were best friends, first loves, and they always had each other’s back. It would have been very believable that seeing her bought back the memories they have had together. T.C. said the only way to get rid of the kill order was if he “fixed” the part of Khalil’s brain that had the kill order. It just so happens that the pierce family was also in that section, so he would forget them as well. With this being said, Khalil remembering Jen wouldn’t have messed up the kill order because it would be gone. Painkiller would no longer want to kill Jen. They could have had their reunion. The fact that they kept their meetings with Khalil a secret from her, knowing he constantly asked about her was wrong. Anissa even said that her and Jen talks about him. I think that black lightning’s ending was bs. Many things were unexplained, and not shown. I would rather a delayed episode than a thrown together episode with unanswered questions. Like the old dude from last season and his daughter. I don’t know why they love to throw together black shows, but put all the time and money into these boring tv shows that don’t have enough melanin. Like they will make a whole boring 10 season show but ruin something like this. At least give the show a proper ending if you’re not renewing it for another season. A huge disappointment.

Honestly i am dissapointed they didn't bring back Gravedigger who is supposed to be hiding in Gotham ( so Batwoman will be dealing with him ? ). Tobias death was so anti-climatic, just like first Oliver Queen's death in Crisis. Latavious trumph brought nothing to show. They didn't explain at all Jennifer Doppelganger ( or whatever cosmic entity it was ). I wanted Jefferson to perform some very powerful feat like stopping antiwave producing antimatter canon. Like c'moon this black lightning has even feats able to match multi-solar system being Imperiex + he is like Asura or Hulk in rage empowerment.

It will be now interesting lore speaking of crossover since it is interesting that how different are dark matter metahumans and green light stable metahumans. Painkiller i guess will join Naomi or maybe will join Batwoman. I assume Lightning should join team Stargirl just like in comics and Anissa should have some crossover with Supergirl as THunder in comics is friend with her. Even Supergirl and Black Lightning cast wanted to have crossover

I know this comment is like 3 months late but I think the doppelgänger with Jennifer was for the sake of the Audience. China McClain made some tiktoks talking about her leaving the show. I assumed the character switch was when China decided not to film the show anymore and the story line was the writers way of introducing the new character. Maybe they were planning on continuing the storyline with the new Jen but once it was decided that this would be the last season they were able to convince China to make a final appearance. This is Just a theory, Maybe the writer wanted to see how the audience felt about the new Jen before calling it quits and didn't get the response he/she wanted. 🤷🏽‍♀️

Black lighting was rushed, Tobias was supposed to be like kingpin in strategy and gravedigger was an awesome season villain. Superman could’ve dealt with Conner, Jonathan, and his cousin

i dont like that they did that with the creature/alien and Jennifer. They could have tied up the loose ends a lot better. And with Tobias, I thought he would really be on it, and that his ending would be final. Lynn was one of my favorite's in the first season. but over time she became a little slow on the pick up. They put too much into the fighting between them. I liked the split with Khalil and Painkiller.
