A little trick if you're running your mix through this and you want to balance your channels: Bring up the gain on both channels until you're hitting the level you need, then mono your mix out and flip phase on one of your input channels. Then tweak the gain on one channel until it nulls (or very close) and you'll have perfectly-matched gain on both channels. Now you can flip the phase back and remove the mono on your mix out. It's an extra step compared to stepped controls, but it will give you matched channels.

In the Auteur vs Quantum part, on one hand I want to say the Quantum is less forgiving, but on the other hand this may be more of a performance difference, and on a third hand the Auteur may well have allowed for a better performance. And that bass comparison with the tracks, that was eye opening. It's like the Quantum has a peak in the low end and everything else is dull, where the Auteur has a more realistic low end and the rest of the spectrum sounds equally fantastic. Thank you!

I’m subscribing because you’re a great singer. Your melodies are beautiful and your review style isn’t snarky. It’s educated and detailed and fair. BUT!! I have been trying to find just one review of an affordable pre with medium to maximum coloration. Gain. Saturation. I am happy I found your channel but dang. You can always purchase a pre amp within your budget to test out and see if it does what you need it to do.And if it doesn't fit your needs just take it back and try another one. I wouldn't just rely on KZbin videos to make a choice. You have to factor in AD/DA conversion as well as the KZbin compression not to mention if there is any post processing. I definitely feel you though it can get overwhelming!

I record with the b173. It emulates 1073 sound very well. Probably less versatile but atleast the preamp is close.

Hands down the auteur is superior bass was warm and thick, vocals were clean and transparent. The stereo recording had a wide depth and the singer is just phenomenal. This is definitely a nice piece of hear for the price.

Quick question if you have time. When a pre-amp only has a gain knob and no output/trim knob is that a con? My guess is that maybe pre-amp with no trim are default cranked and the knob removed. I really don't know.

I wouldn't say it con. Just gives you less control over setting the gain, but it also makes it easier to set the gain since you're setting one knob and not two. But you can look at preamps with just a gain. Knob is having a fixed output, and you just said how much input level you need

Hi Im looking for a color preamp to run my mix through it and I think this two channel preamp has a good configuration and price for it, would you make a test runing a couple of mixes in different configuratinos to see what this preamp could do for a mix? By the way if the gain knobs would be step it would be better for that application. Thanks for the review

Hi, thanks for this great review! maybe it's a dumb question, but I have a RME UCX interface and want to upgrade my preamps. If I use the Auteur first in my signal chain, the signal still has to go through the preamps of my RME right? Does this still give me a much better signal to work with in my DAW?! just askin for a friend ;)

ich schicke 16 stereospuren, analog summiert in den auteur mk3 als makeup gain. funktioniert supergut, es gibt nur keine gesteppten gainregler. es hat schon so etwas den API charakter, durch den fehlenden input transformer aber wesentlich cleaner, was für meine zwecke sehr gut ist. trotzdem hat das ding eine menge charakter.

Hello. I know this is mainly a MIC preamp, but it does has line level inputs/outputs . I don't record vocals, I make hip-hop / boombap beats. If I use this preamp between my analog mixer and my audio interface will this add some coloration to my beats?
