@C Summers I agree, but it's just a way of classifying one of rock's many genres. Just as all bands are unique even within other classifications, such as progressive, classic, alternative, anyway. How to classify the 'Rush' for example? It's just a label to distinguish bands from the same era with some roots in common.

A wonderful reaction to a very powerful song. Every time I listen to Black I tear up ... every single time ... I feel the pain of lost love and you explained it excellent that many different people can relate to it. Eddy's voice is not from this world really and I feel so privileged to have been to a live concert of Pearl Jam and hear him sing live. Without a doubt you will also love the song Jeremy and I can't wait what you think about those lyrics. Thank you!

Great review! You are absolutely right, It can relate to all forms of loss and this song was very hard for him to sing live because it opened the wound of his lost love every time and you could see towards the end of the performance. Jeremy is one of their best songs and was controversial because suicide was a hot button topic at the time, and I believe it was censored from MTV. Speaking of controversial, if you ever wanted to react to Tom Macdonald, he has a ton of music, but the genre is rap. He's not your average rapper, lol. He doesn't talk negatively and really makes you think. Every song he does makes you exercise your brain 🤔 You either love or hate him. There is not much in-between. I respect him for how creative he is and the visuals he has in his videos. Just a suggestion.. But if you don't, that is totally understandable as the genre is different. His first song is called "Dear Rappers"

Warmest greetings from Vancouver 🇨🇦 My uncle was lucky enough to be an audio tech in Seattle when Pearl Jam, Nirvana, were breaking through . He had an opportunity to meet all the members of both those bands and he says to this day, Eddie Vedder is one of the nicest people ever wanna meet and also one of the most unique voices around.. I highly recommend watching Jeremy the official video . Also Evenflo official video is also very good. Would like to see you get into Led Zeppelin, whole Lotta. Love, heartbreaker, good Times, bad Times, rock ‘n’ roll, dazed and confused. The official videos of these would be perfectly fine from the Led Zeppelin KZbin channel

Its not about letting go. It's about his being scarred (tattooed) by his first love, his perception of the world (loss of innocence) changing forever. You cant let go of a tattoo. I think the summary line is "All the love gone bad, turned my world to black. Tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I'll be. Kind of the opposite of letting go.

The little head-shake at 2.36 is because Eddie mixes up one of the lines, but it's unnoticeable if you didn't know the song. But the correct line: "I know she gave me all that she wore" ...had more Eddie magic on it. Specifically the word 'she': "I know she gave me all that sheeeeeeeeeee wore". He really knows how and when to hold a note. Saw them live MANY years ago, and they were amazing.

Your analysis of the lyrics is spot on! The song is about letting go. It is assumed That the song is about his long relationship with musician Beth Liebling whom Vedder had been dating since 1983, whom he married in 1994 and divorced in 2000.Vedder said in a 2011 documentary that the song is about letting go. Your pick for the song Jeremy is an excellent choice. Hopefully it can be the official video.

Eddie has said that the song is about first love and how devastating it is when that first idealized relationship ends. The song was written while he was with Beth and he dedicates "Oceans" to her in the beginning of this Unplugged show. MTv edited it out but the unedited version is on KZbin.

Its a Song Eddie was very upset about putting on the album due to the overly causal nature of how people can see his pain. It was so powerful to him that he made comment at one time that he heard people casually singing it once that he snapped and demanded they stop singing it. Lots of hurt in it.

This song was about a stillborn/miscarriage situation that resulted in a breakup. “Legs spread out before me, as HER body once DID.” Giving birth. “All five horizons revolve around the soul.” Describing the baby: head, arms, and legs. Then, the moment of happiness sours. “Now the air I taste and I breathe has taken a turn.” Goes on to talk about hearing kids laughing, but it makes him sear inside, presumably because he expected to hear his own kid laugh one day and no that won’t even happen. Absolutely devastating to imagine.

Huh. Nobody ever seems to mention that, while the performance is amazing, Eddie messed up. "Now the air that I tasted and breathed has taken a turn Ooh And all I taught her was everything Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore And now my bitter hands chafe beneath the clouds Of what was everything Oh the pictures have all been washed in black Tattoed everything" This verse isn't in this version. He was pissed that he messed up. He sang here: "And all I taught her was everything How quick the sun can drop away And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass Of what was everything All the bitches said, all been washed in black Tattooed everything" That's why there's more emphasis in the second time he sung the verse. He's pissed. Even so, this whole show was an amazing showcase of pure musical talent from the whole band. I see a lot of comments saying "React to 'Jeremy.'" Good song, but you should go for 'Release.'

God I remember when this album came out. The days before mp3 an iPods were popular. It was just a cd/radio player. And my friend who was friend, who is full of drama and coincidently French background. Loved this band and we would have to hear the whole album, it sucked. I don’t call it grunge rock I called depression rock. As Vince McNeil said “I just don’t get grunge. I don’t need a song to tell me that life sucks and it’s unfair.” But there was a happy ending to the story. The mighty MP3 player came out, and so didn’t, Napster. For a little while 😊
