At Uncommon Schools, 8% of teachers are Black male teachers, that’s more than 4x the national average at 1.3%. Uncommon has been partnering with UNCF to recruit teachers and has overall made efforts to diversity its teacher force through their teacher fellowship program. Why does it matter? The dropout rates from high school for Black male students after an encounter with a single Black male educator decreases by 39%, and their college aspirations increase by 19%.
On Wednesday March 27, Uncommon is held its inaugural Black Male Educator Summit in Brooklyn with 70+ black male teachers coming together for a professional development session and to provide a common space to share experiences.
