A descendant of the lost tribe of Atlanteans known as The Deserters, David Hyde, whose mother, Ramona, walked out on him when he was a child, was raised by his father, Jesse on his family’s fishing boat, the Black Manta. Jesse tried to raise Hyde to be tough, unsentimental, and merciless, believing that a black man would need to be tough to succeed in life. He taught Hyde that the latter did not need anyone. As a young man, Hyde worked as a diver and a treasure hunter for Jesse. They sought the mythic Black Pearl, which would grant its user hydrokonetic powers. In the Bermuda Triangle, in the lost Atlantean kingdom of Xebel, he seduced a young woman, wanting the map to the Black Pearl, she saw through Hyde’s intentions and forged a fake map, impeding his search for the Pearl until much later. Eventually, Dr. Stephen Shin contracted Hyde to gain a sample of Arthur Curry’s blood. During the encounter that followed, Arthur’s father, Tom, came to his defense, only to suffer a heart attack in the process, dying 3 days later. following Tom’s funeral, Arthur swore revenge, storming the Black Manta and killing Jesse, believing that he was responsible for Tom’s death. Out of vengeance, Hyde crafted weapons and armor and went hunting. When Arthur became publicly known as Aquaman, Hyde became The supervillain known as Black Manta and would clash with Aquaman on several occasions.

Uxas was born in the nightmare world of Apokolips to the royal family that reigned over it, namely it’s king, Yuga Khan, and his consort, Heggra. Ever since reaching adulthood, Uxas longed for the throne of Apokolips, but saw opposition in the form of his brother, Drax, also known as the extraterrestrial superhero Infinity-Man. Uxas had plotted his whole life to supplant both Heggra and Drax. He travelled to New Genesis and met a young man, who was peaceful by nature. Releasing his pet bird, Uxas convinced the man that his cat had eaten it, and that he should bury the cat alive. When the bird returned, however, the cat was already dead. Because of this, the man strangled it in a rage. The man soon assumed the name “Desaad”, and becoming Uxas’ most trusted advisor and the closest that the former ever had to a friend. His chance to rule Apokolips came when he discovered the Omega Realm. Drax intended to connect with it, but Uxas interrupted this and took the power for himself, seemingly killing Drax in the process. When he emerged from the chrysalis that formed around his body, he took on the name “Darkseid”, the most feared name in all of the god names in the ancient Apokoliptian lore books that no one dared assume, as his god name. Haggra, who detested Drax’s pacifist ways, was pleased with Darkseid’s ruthlessness. He eventually invaded Earth in search for what he believed was an “Anti-Life Equation”. During his attempts to find it, he battled many of the world’s superheroes, chief among them Superman, which quickly turned into an extremely antagonistic relationship. Since Superman founded the One Earth Regime, he has largely brushed off any threats involving Darkseid, let alone any mention of him at all, implying that he is not afraid to face Darkseid in spite of his immense power.
