Respect is a fundamental human need, but for Black men in America, it has been hard-won throughout a complex history of oppression and marginalization.
And the definition of respect, and disrespect for that matter, even changes depend on who you're asking. It's complex and many of us are willing to die over it. Sometimes demanding our respect is the only way we feel we have power. It's heavy, but it's real. But there's gotta be another way to expand what respect is and how we go about earning it.
This conversation features brothers from our BMB Miami Chapter and is a continuation from WARTIME Issue 4, "The Platinum Rule: There are Different Levels to Respect" written by BMB Co-Director Asa Shaw.
