Black Men Build

Respect is a fundamental human need, but for Black men in America, it has been hard-won throughout a complex history of oppression and marginalization.
And the definition of respect, and disrespect for that matter, even changes depend on who you're asking. It's complex and many of us are willing to die over it. Sometimes demanding our respect is the only way we feel we have power. It's heavy, but it's real. But there's gotta be another way to expand what respect is and how we go about earning it.
This conversation features brothers from our BMB Miami Chapter and is a continuation from WARTIME Issue 4, "The Platinum Rule: There are Different Levels to Respect" written by BMB Co-Director Asa Shaw.

If we are led to appreciate 'respect' as meaning to proceed from a relational standpoint of ensuring equality and fairness with any and all, then this becomes a necessary condition for love to exist. Love, as derived from this standpoint, might then mean to recognize and act in ways that honour the wellbeing of any and all. Black Men Build, you are critically important!

True story that words don’t mean the same. In our presents era you would get cut ear to ear for calling someone a jive azz turkey and lose all respect for not doing it 💯 respect is standing on principles and your manhood. Thing is most of these young Thundercats feel they have to prove themselves to the next man. Stay true to self and The Most High and real disrespect is something you lose sleep over

"what were you taught?" - Contradictions. "you have to respect women." Then you see dad objectifying women, honking, hollering, etc. Television has strong Black women on shows, but other shows are treating women horribly. I'm glad I made the right choices growing up, because it does feel like you have to pick which lessons to follow when it comes to respect. Women in particular as Phil talks about, potentially having listened to the lessons I turned away from.

Really felt that conclusion, talking about contradictions better than I was able to. Word to Asa on platinum rule. Treat others as THEY would like to be treated. That blew my mind as a teenager when I first heard it, after hearing golden rule so much growing up. ✊🏾

Much needed and look forward to tappin in on the next convo!!! In my humble hoodologist opinion. Respect is driven by fear, either emotional shame, physical punishment, or restriction of access etc. That fear maintains respectful behavior as men its our role to maintain that balance of fear when our people get outta line in terms of respectful behavior.
