Really looks like it's a week or two after Gordon began working in Anomalous Materials, doing the HEV training as part of his job, and no-one takes him seriously yet - or even tries to be genuinely supportive instead of polite. With the exception of Kleiner of course, who is genuinely warm and supportive and I love him for that :)

He also brought the sample from Xen to test on (as we can see thoughout HL1 playthrough H.E.V. science team was not doing a real good job collecting samples since we haven't seen any of them alive out there) Obviously he signed him up for that stuff.

Fun fact: In our original script, G-Man made a brief appearance behind the glass doors before you enter the range. But we felt that made it WAY too obvious and not subtle enough (as is the G-Man way), and we also wanted to make it more ambiguous as to whether G-Man knew about Freeman before the Course, or only took notice of him after. So by popular team vote, we cut that scene.

The crystals that are analyzed in the Anti-Mass Spectrometer came from Xen, (Well, the crystal that caused the Resonance Cascade was from the G-Man, but he probably got it from Xen) so we know that people equipped with HEV suits went to Xen _and_ came back alive. The chapter Questionable Ethics also showed that several aliens found in Xen were already brought from Xen to Black Mesa before the disaster. There's not really any reason for the hazard course to _not_ train personnel on the use of firearms.

Here in Texas, like 3/100 people have a concealed carry license- they're able to basically carry loaded guns anywhere with the exception of places that explicitly prohibit it. Many people carry guns with them as well. If you don't have a concealed carry license, the guns have to be unloaded for it to be legal- but how long does it take to slap a magazine in the gun? Most people I know have guns in their gym bag, or car or in a drawer at work (if the establishment allows it.) New Mexico is pretty similar to Texas with gun culture. It follows that some of the science team and administration would have guns.

I feel like it's kind of explainable why it's there though. I assume that during stasis, even if not too much according to Eli's (an old scientist at that point) eyes, Gordon has aged. He even looks reasonably older on box art of HL2 compared to HL1. Hence he can't sprint non-stop like he used to (and, infact, can't run at all without HEV suit in HL2), he can't swing his crowbar as fast, can't push crates as hard, and can't hold his breath as well so he needs the HEV suit to use its power to hold and dispense breathable air to him - the "auxillary power" is used for the air pump.

This is really awesome with the way it delves into and expands upon the lore of the games, as well as expose some of the little quirks here and there. It is pretty silly that they have to teach you how to climb a ladder (Ross Scott mentioned this in Freeman's Mind), and let's be honest here, the Target Range on the original Hazard Course really doesn't make any sense, lmao. Under normal circumstances a scientist doesn't need to know how to use an SMG (with a grenade launcher to boot) so the part about them inadvertently mixing up Gordon's files in order to explain why he receives training with guns is a great detail.

Wes Lesley Sorry about the mistake. I wrote the captions for the HC when I was testing the mod with PSR (the HC devs). I was trying to be as thorough and accurate to what you hear in-game as possible when writing the captions for the final version of it. Looks like that was one of the ones I missed. The other one had a smart quote for one of the guards' lines when there wasn't supposed to be one iirc. They have been working on updating the HC a bit [although I don't know if it's for the mod version, Steam version (which will be available when the Workshop works properly for it), or both]. Wherever that goes, I'll have that caption fixed for it.

Back in 1998, the hazard course was an ingenious way of introducing the player to the mouse and WSAD way of gaming we know and love today and to teach people the mechanics of the game without taking the player out of the atmosphere of sudden tutorials. I just wish this was implemented into the steam build. I really don't want to download 4.6GB of game just to play an addon 1/32nd the size of the mod

A training course like this in 2018-19, that teaches the most basic of moves, might sound silly now... But I still remember how I gave this game (the original HL) to a relative of mine back in early 2000s, who'd never even touched a computer in his life before that, and he was having difficulties with it, especially that consecutive-three-jumps bit.
