The suit does in fact have a helmet XD in the first game it comes with a helmet canonically, because some of the other men you can find around with HEV suits have helmets on. But for some reason, Gordon does not have a helmet. My theory is that he lost it after the failed experiment resulting in the resonance cascade.

The designer of the original HL1 HEV suit once commented that Gordon is wearing the helmet, it's just not shown on the HEV suit model, the 3rd person model, or the game artwork because they thought it looked cooler without. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but hey, this is black mesa. The facility that has rivers and waterfalls of green radioactive acid, even to the way to your office.

That's what I thought as well. I believe the helmet was tucked away within the suit (Like the suit helmets in Dead Space) and assembles once the person wears the suit. I'm pretty sure the helmet snapped off once the Cascade happened either from the explosions or from the electrical energy portals.

Being that Guy here, in the original the Headpiece is a deployable Biohazard hood with Gasmask. Not a Helmet but it would protect you from Hazardous materials and is in the neck piece. All the Vanity shots have Gordon with it un-deployed so we can see his marketable face but the HL multiplayer models and the corpses in Xen have the Hood deployed and Dev's have confirmed Canonically Gordon wears the full suit with hood during the events of Black Mesa. The Remastered Models from Black mesa have a separate helmet piece on the Bodies which is my only gripe with what is otherwise a excellent remake.

The reason everyone assumes Gordon isn't wearing a helmet is because the in-game model for the suit when he picks it up doesn't visibly have one, and pictures of him wearing it show him without one. However, if he has no helmet, how is the suit providing him with air underwater and projecting his interface in front of his face? I thus conclude he is actually wearing a helmet, and the helmet is normally stored inside the chest of the empty suit. The pictures of him wearing the suit but no helmet are purely so players can see Gordon's face.

Even worse: In Half Life 2, Dr Kleiner, KNOWING Gordons going to be SHOT AT and ATTACKED BY HEADCRABS doesn't give him a helmet. And at no point in any of the games does Gordon think to maybe just scavenge a helmet from the countless soldiers he kills. Not even when he goes to Ravenholm, a place infested with headcrabs and headcrab zombies does he try to get a helmet. Not only is it an old mining town I'm almost certain had a bunch of hard hat props lying about in it, but even if there wasn't, Gordon has a god damn damn gravity gun which can apply a great deal of force to objects, perhaps enough that could make his own helmet out of a piece of scrap metal to protect his head.
