Gene did a drum clinic in Wroclaw in Poland around 2013. I had a chance to ask him why he plays open handed and 2 rides. I asked him if that because he had to play Sean Reinert’s parts from Human album. He laughed and said to me that he started to play open handed because he was TOO FAT TO CROSS THE STICKS. I swear that’s true story what he said, super chill guy!!

I got a chance to interview Gene Hoglan many years ago and he mentioned growing up, his drum kit in his room restricted his right arm so he learned to lead with his left. He was such a nice guy and funny too! My favorite metal drummer :)

So underrated. He wrote a lot of the guitars, lyrics, bass, on the Dark Angel albums. His work with the other talented musicians in Death is so good. Musical pioneering in metal. His time in Testament, especially with Steve DiGiorgio on bass, is probably my favorite period of Testament. So creative, such timing, such technique, never technical for the sake of being technical but always looking to serve the song. Gene Hoglan and Dirk Verburen (his stuff in Soilwork is great) are probably my favorite drummers in metal, but there's so many out there.

Dethklok is how I first came across him. Saw him twice with Testament, and was blown away both times. Hands down one of the best to ever pick up a set of sticks.

Saw Mr. Atomic Clock & Co. (Death ☠) for the first time back in the early 90's during the Individual Thought Patterns tour. I had been extremely apprehensive since reading that Sean Reinert's tenure in Death had ended. Human, after all, delivered track after track of bludgeoning methodical malevolence

All of Death Drummers where great all different styles of playing. The most interesting is that to get good on the double bass he used ankle weights which I wouldn’t recommended to ppl just learning to play double bass.
