Something a lot of people seem to miss is the "woman" in his "memories" is another construct of the Mass device. Notice that his "memories" of "her" also start to glitch when he is exposed to the device that cripples the implants. Apparently, the Mass device has created "someone to fight for" and "someone to get home to". Actual motivations of many real soldiers in combat.

The title comes from SLA Marshall's seminal work, "Men Against Fire" in which he did an in depth study of how men act in combat. The stats that the psychologist gives the soldier about the declining rates of engagement of soldiers in combat is straight from Marshall's research.

I know this is an older post but thanks for that info mate. I never knew that. The analysis from the woman on the right is always so insightful, that I've been binge-watching the channel's reactions. In my opinion, Black Mirror is the best reflection (pun intended) on the impacts of tech on humanity I've ever seen. It's even more powerful today.
@scotthewitt2582 жыл бұрын
The idea that the Mass device can scan a person's DNA in real time and detect the "defects" that are being weeded out and then make that person appear to the soldier as a "Roach" is scary level high-tech. Like so many things in "Black Mirror". But, so much of the technology could likely be created within a relatively short time with dedicated research.

That's the scary thing about black mirror, pretty much every episode talks about a possible near future (sometimes present) for society :/ It can look and sound crazy, but when you think about it, we're really not that far from it being our reality

The way the Mass deceives the soldiers into seeing something non-Human is used in several other sci-fi works. I think there was an episode of the new "The Outer Limits" that used a similar theme. And, of course it was a main theme in a recent sci-fi movie adapted from a YA novel.

Found it. "Hearts and Minds" is the episode of the new "The Outer Limits". From 1998.

it is far from clear whether "roaches" had any thing wrong about them at all. it is about demonizing enemies, for whatever reason, and making people in military obey through complete enclosing of a person in a propaganda bubble. btw it is true that most soldiers don't shoot and people tend to run away. it is only in movies that most soldiers (or enemies or underling of villains) willingly fight. there is a reason why soldiers have to go through months of training and bonding with each other, before even seeing a real fight, otherwise most of them run away abandoning their fellows. its not so much like hitler, it is more like modern western establishment(or other authorities in other countries), with its warmongering elite and permanent wars. with cooperation of legacy media enemies are demonized as monsters through propaganda (re legacy media depiction of russians, iranians, syrian "regime", etc) while actual facts and realities about wars are kept away from ordinary people . of course propaganda don't quite work in real life. western military is uniformly unsuccessful in recent decades. their soldiers don't really want to fight in these wars and they don't really believe in the rationale. american soldiers, for instance, have consistently voted overwhelmingly for candidates like trump or ron paul in past decade, candidate who say, when campaigning, they will get less involved in other people's wars, fought for benefit of american "allies".

I think they mentioned in the episode something about "wanting to get rid of handicaps, deviances, homosexuality, etc.," so I think roaches are basically people that diverge from the "normativity". But you're right, the episode is mostly about demonizing the ennemy (and I have absolutely no problem believing that the man's facts about war were true, which makes their technology and their use of it even worse D:) to even imagine that this reality is not so farfetched really changes one's perspective about war and the army in general!

It's more like people with a defectuos genes, they are killing them so it can't be passed on to the general population
@douglas29385 жыл бұрын
@@desxen There's no defective genes. That may be part of the propaganda they're pushing but by the end it's pretty clear it's an advanced eugenics program, aimed at getting rid of any kind of "undesirables". The fact that the girl had an accent should be a big clue.

I think you really hit something referring to the playtest episode. Some years ago i saw an add for "armée de terre française" which looked obviously like the most famous military-like videogames. I was shocked that they were not even trying to hide the maneuver. I can't find it on the internet now. But researching it, i learned that they were inserting adds directly in some videogames; not military ones, sport games only, because, I quote: "la guerre n'est pas un jeu"-"war is not a game"... kind of ironic! www.20minutes.fr/france/383440-20100209-armee-recrute-a-travers-jeux-video-ligne

Also i share your opinion about war, i think it's human and natural to feel bad about doing it, and not aknowledging the horrors of it could be really dangerous. Which reminds me of an old Star Trek episode, S01X23, A Taste of Armageddon, in which two planets have been at war for several centuries. With their modern technology, they are able to keep it totally virtual, in order to preserve the planets from any kind of destruction... but by agreeing to sacrifice millions of people each time a virtual attack succeeds. The people are willingly going into some "killing chamber" for the greater good. Kirk says something like "if the wars aren't terrible anymore, they can never stop, and the people aren't afraid of them enough to want to prevent them from happening". Anyway, greetings from France, you (both :) ) are insightful and interesting to listen to.

My mind setting was fucked up watching this. I feel ashamed of myself. I thought they had hacked into him and would use his implant to so say see his Commander who they shot. Or they would turn him into one of them... I never picked up the signs when he referred to the roaches as " He" or the fact they smelled the grass and heard the birds.. My head was so into their mission. In the end this episode was like the military's response to Vietnam when so many soldiers later in the war became anti war demonstrators. It wasn't the College kids the gov't was worried about it protesting, it was the soldiers. Because they had the credibility and more influence.. We heard about the protests back in the day but the mood in the US against the war was like what we've seen the past 7-8 years.

Not to mention there would be a huge disconnect between these current crop of soldiers and Gulf War, Vietnam, Afghanistan veterans who have to live with their memories of the war and PTSD.. I'm sure they would still have respect in the aspect of dealing with war in general but their purpose, coupled with the fact they don't have to deal with the hardships of war and the psychological aspects of it. Vets would probably want little to do with them..

My best guess would be that he knows that everything he is seeing is fake. Just a mask. And to know that you can see the girl of your dream right in front of you, but to never ne able to touch her, feel her must be heartbreaking. And i don't think that he is able to turn it off since the army probably made sure that he wouldn't be able to reveal the truth about the roaches :(. If you have another suggestion write it down, i'll be glad to Read it and talk to you about it😘
@vplane5 жыл бұрын
He does not know that everything he sees is fake, in fact he doesn't remember what happened to his vision or the whole deal with the roaches. He chose to have those memories removed rather than relive the horror of what he did for the rest of his life. In exchange, he was discharged with honors, and given a "fantasy ending".

I remember when I edited this episode I got surprised at how laggy the video was after, because it played nicely for us 🤷 the problem was definitely coming from OBS (which I used to record the episode) and I don't remember what I did back then, but I solved the issue somehow later on xD
