The writers knew perfectly well that everyone would be expecting a tragic cruel twist ending, and they turned it into a reverse twist by making it look like it was going that way and then gifting us a beautiful surprise happy ending. No wonder so many people cry.

I think there can be a better love story, gay or straight. This was basically a fling that gets the happily ever after treatment, and I don't like those because they haven't put in the time with each other, really gotten to know one another. And like Kelly said go through the " Boredom" part of their relationship. I think it would have been better if they knew each when they were younger and ran into one another decades later in San Junipero..

You die, but the copy lives on, so you wouldn’t experience anything the copy experiences. It’s like you copy a file and edit the copied file. the original file doesn’t change and if you delete it the copy still gets to be there, but the original is gone.

Your concepts of the afterlife it seems are very...physical/human based that you think you'll get bored after an hour or "want to fuck everyone there" instead of "just sitting there doing nothing"....the whole point is that you'll be free from your body in the spirit realm...your senses and your mind won't be limited like they are now...the physical universe we know of, as mind-bogglingly vast as it is, is still a tiny fraction of reality...you'll be able to explore all of that, plus all the other dimensions/densities from microcosm to macro. You'll be outside of time as well in the first place so you'll only experience the present moment. Our brains can't fathom the true nature of consciousness/awareness outside of our physical lives. It's like a drop of water that is returned to the ocean...we'll gain so much it can't be understood.

What I find interesting is that when you die in the real world you don't make the conscious decision to die unless you're really suffering in some way. But in San Junipero if you want to get unplugged you have to make the conscious decision to die while also living in a very healthy body and in a heaven like world. So would you ever be able to make that decision in the first place or would you always feel kind of guilty and always be doubting that choice and therefore still live in an eternity because you dread the decision of ending your life?

Scifi needs a few more happy endings. I get that you might critique aspects of society and technology and that it might lead to grim outcomes. But too frequently we use grim twists as an easy sledgehammer to punctuate an episode or short story, because it's easier to destroy things than to create. Seriously, think about how easy it is, "and they became digital slaves" "every time they hit the reset button it killed the different version of themselves" "he was already dead the whole time" etc. This ending, even though their courtship is a bit rushed, is much more meaningful to me than if they just torched it all to ashes in the last moments.

Chris. The afterlife wouldnt be boring if you had like a personal heaven. Like, you could make yourself forget you're dead and live in any type of world you wanted with ai people that you don't know are fake. So you can live in the 80's or you can live in Game of Thrones but give yourself cheat codes. Or you can live in an anime hentai if you want. Plot Twist: This is the afterlife and you made yourself forget and now you're living through it. The next "life" will be a world with super heroes. Seriously, people's imaginations are too limited. In the afterlife, you wouldn't just be sitting there. you could make a personal world where you can fly around as a dragon 3 giant boobs wearing a red leather jacket. The possibilities are endless. Hopefully that's what the afterlife is like. I'm sure it is, but to explain why I think this would require a 10 page essay which I have actually written before. Got a 98 (grammatical errors).

black mirror is so fantastical in the way it explores potential alternate realities, it also does realism particularly well, so there's never anything too mindbending to grasp, operating within the 'life as we know it' principle, which i suppose was necessary at the time it debuted considering the inevitable controversy and backlash that would've come from a couple of episodes, i can only liken it to exiting a moving vehicle, you try to run until your legs reach a suitable rate of speed and then let go of the car door and proceed to slow yourself down when at a safe distance from the car, essentially 'easing into it'.

Passing over or not doesn't matter. When the physical body is dead and your consciousness is simulated, you're dead. Deciding on crossing over is deciding whether an AI will be started there and whether you want to die. By that token this is also not a happy ending. It is in comparison to all other Black mirror episodes, no living hell here. But they are dead and two programs do a digital dance forever. Not terrible but far from a happy ending.

Although Pat is a Normie and friend, the wheel landed on Legion. It's fine if you want to react to Ballers for him, but own up and react to Legion as well then. I don't watch Legion, nor do I even know what that show is about, but if you've been trying to be fair all the other times you've spun the wheel you changing course now makes me feel negative about the whole wheel situation.
@Adrian9oh97 жыл бұрын
Agreed. People say others are taking this too seriously but you have to think that if the decision based on the wheel is not being honored, why have it at all? Why not have another lottery-based system that makes it easier like picking a show out of a bowl? Obviously that's not as fun as spinning a wheel, but it'll be easier to manage and no one can really dispute it. Also, I don't think we should reward a grown man for cheating on a wheel because he wouldn't get what he wanted otherwise.

One woman said you'd be stuck in one place forever. For one thing, you can drive a heck of a lot of interesting places in the U.S.! Also, in the scene where Yorkie is walking to her car, you see a jet fly overhead, so they have air travel, too. I think the trial period you may be limited to San Junipero, but once you're a permanent resident, you can go wherever you want. That's why the machine moved them both to a different spot in the system. They were already dead, their consciousness was already uploaded. The only reasons to move them is to move their consciousness to other locations, and the machine moved them together so they'd be together in the same locale. To me I think the idea of San Junipero is something you would HAVE to do. Yes everything get's boring eventually that's the fucking point. The point is that living in San Junipero gives you as much time as you want to do any experience everything you didn't get to in the real world and you get to be the one to choose when it ends. Imagine a death that only you can choose that would only happen after you are completely and 100% spiritually satisfied with your life. Imagine having as much time as you want with the people you love doing the things you love. It was never about eternity it was about "The rest of it." What any of us wouldn't give for the rest of it. Also personally I've always believed the whole "are you real" discussion is mute. Your body isn't what makes you real it's your emotions, your thoughts and connections that do. Whether you're powered by a computer or a real brain it's all just interpreting electrical signals. We are more than what the bounds of our reality provide. Time, space, biology, computers, religion, philosophy it's all just different words for the same shit. If you feel, then you are real. No matter what.

i had a dream once where my hell was working in a barber shop. A man would come in for a haircut, I would give him a haircut, then after about an hour it would reset and he would walk back in. At first I thought it wasnt so bad, and I would give him different styles, break out into dance, etc. After a while, I started getting angry because I was running out of things to do. I killed him multiple times, in all ways imaginable. After that I tried killing myself, which resulted in me having to wait out the rest of the hour, dead yet conscious, trapped in my own body. Eventually I ran through every possible outcome, leaving me insane. It reminds me of bandersnatch in the way i had to confront my own decision making and map out every outcome

But you could "unplug" and move on to real Heaven when ever you want. But for the meantime they want to be together. They not trapped. Why not do it until you say forget it.

Ok, I read literally 100 comments and out of all that only one person said they wouldn't but that was because they don't think it would be really them it would be a copy of them. So that's a pretty overwhelming consensus, to answer your question. I think you guys were not using your imagination to its fullest extent in thinking of all the creative ideas you could do in such a virtual world. The best point I thought the panelists raised though was that "without consequences life would be boring". And I kind of agree to that. It reminds me of a twilight zone episode, SPOILER ALERT where a gangster died and he had gone to heaven because it was everything he ever wanted. Girls all threw themselves at him, everyone laughed at his every joke, he could never lose on the craps table. SPOILER ALERT But it turned out he only presumed he had gone to heaven, it was actually hell because living like this for eternity would surely drive anyone mad. But,, a counter argument to that , is you could have consequences added in as part of the existence. You could sign up for a program where you don't have godlike powers, your pain slider is not set to zero, and you have to work to achieve your goals. I think most people after trying it long enough in god mode would opt for the consequences mode.

Interesting use of the concept of a soulbank. most sci-fi combine it with transhumanism to inhabit robot-bodies

gerbenvanessen yeah, but I've read sci fi with exactly this concept. It's bot original, I predicted it in the 1st 5 minutes. Fun episode, but bland, as someone else put it.
