Fun fact (or not so fun fact): The writers have confirmed that Kenny is 19 which means he will he tried as an adult for his crimes. The casting of a such an innocent and baby faced actor was a good call

ajnr6 he’s trying to point out the fallibility of humans and the very real psychological disorder; paraphilia/pedophilia. Perhaps if it wasn’t so egregiously taboo this young kid could have sought help. There ARE effective treatments for paraphilia. But even with HIPPA laws people are afraid of the exposure even with a PSYCHIATRIST

I'm surprised you instantly believed him. I didn't realize his accusation of Kenny was accurate until the phone call at the end, and even after that I feel pretty skeptical. Just a video of him doesn't prove anything, and if he was so paranoid as to buy a lock for his door and argue with his sister then I doubt he'd have the stuff on his harddrive like Hector did. That would leave the only evidence of his crimes being search history which is shaky at best. That's not really a reason for Kenny to be so terrified at the hackers. It's shown over and over again that the video is what Kenny is so afraid of, not what he was watching or what was on his computer. The logical conclusion would be that evidence was planted on his computer remotely to make things even worse for him in the end. After all he had to be an idiot in 1 of 2 ways and all evidence seems to point to him being an idiot for not just calling the police immediately rather than being an idiot for not covering his tracks.
@Maria-tl9lw
@Maria-tl9lw 6 жыл бұрын
KingBranden I didn’t immediately think he was a pedo but I took in consideration that he never admitted to wanking on camera whenever he was asked what exactly he did, he always just said “I was just looking at some pictures” and started crying and when the man asked him “how young were they” I assumed he was looking at child pornography and to raise my suspicion he didn’t deny it but I never thought of them applying the pictures on to the computer
@EmpressChu
@EmpressChu 6 жыл бұрын
KingBranden I'm gonna be honest, I instantly believed him, just because the scene at the start when he gives the little girl her toy back was unsettling to me and the fact he didn't just go to the police for just masturbation, I studied media so I can't help but analyse everything

Kera yeah it absolutely does hurt the child bc they got sexually assaulted making the videos dumbasses! That’s like saying snuff films where people are murdered don’t hurt people! Drawings and shit are different in that respect in that real children aren’t directly harmed but I fear normalizing this lolicon shit more and more over time. It will endanger real children when pedophiles can more easily justify their actions in their heads and think it’s ok to give in to their desires instead of getting help.

Omg y'all I just remembered that at the beginning of the episode Kenny gave a toy a little girl had lost back to her. And he kind of just stared at her when she walked away. But of course watching it then you wouldn't suspect a thing and just think that Kenny's a nice guy. Also there was that girl boss lady who had an obvious interest in Kenny but Kenny never showed any interest in her. Quite a few red flags that I can't believe I missed. EDIT: On a rewatch rn and I lowk forgot I posted this comment lmaooo -- but I just wanted to add that of course you don't need to be gay or awkward or anything to simply not reciprocate feelings/interest for someone, but the interaction between that lady and Kenny paired up with the other things he's done makes it a "red flag".

Given that Kenny pissed himself with the bank robbery and wanted to shoot himself, before he had to shoot someone else, I can't see him as someone who could force Children to have sex. Cowardly looking at Child Porn without thinking about the consequences for other people, sure! But I don't think he has enough... guts to do that himself. Sorry, if that sounds like I would call that a virtue in this case. Also Bar San, you make it sound like the hackers were heroes. They could've just leaked these Things without making People fight to the death for their amusement.

ZiggyWSB That does really make sense but then again, people don't want to be/feel powerless or weak which is why they're are capable of the most horrible acts (great example is bullying). So I think it is also possible that as a weak, cowardly person he might desire someone who will make him feel less so... And children are even weaker and more easily scared than he is. So I think there still is a chance he would end up growing into a child molester. That said people also do grow more bold and assertive as they mature all the time. I'm quite grateful that isn't the case in the episode but cynically enough it could go either way, I think!

I think it’s really interesting how you spend an hour feeling sorry for Kenny, like come on he’s just a teen who watched some porn. Then at the end you figure out he’s a pedophile. So it makes you reevaluate: did Kenny deserve what happened to him? Black mirror has a way of making you think about how YOU think... what your core morals and beliefs are. Some people still feel sorry for him, some believe he deserved what he got.

Bro I see this argument over and over and over and over and its just so bland and boring to me.. Let me ask you this, what do you think drives demand up more? Some socially inept, idiotic teen making a stupid mistake, or a society that gives him nowhere to go to deal with these tendancies? Maybe if we weren't so quick to throw these people into the deepest pits of hell and recognised that one does not choose to be this way. Even if Kenny wanted to seek help, we wouldn't let him, we'd be too busy trying to punish him for something has hasn't done(as in actually being a sexual abuser) or for tendancies he did not choose. It just goes to show that people care more about punishment instead of actually fixing the problem.

@@suckmyduck7029 I agree, even tho I understand why so many people think he deserved it. I just think many don’t understand that these people weren’t born evil, but became this way. It’s hard because crimes on innocent people are hard to forgive and children are the definition of innocence. It's hard to think about this rationally, but looking at this rationally these people need psychological help. Imprisoning them for life isn’t really the solution. Someone close to me was sexually abused and the pain of it is deep and traumatizing, so I can understand the people wanting them to be punished, but you can’t let your emotions get in the way of treating these people. I just hope the person who did this to my family member will regret it for the rest of his life and will become a mental healthy and good person.

Its implied that Kenny won, not the other guy. It was a fight to the DEATH and Kenny lived. I also want to say that this is one of, if not, my favorite episodes. The episode starts with Kenny being extremely relatable, we all do private things on our computers or phones that we would not want everyone in our contact lists (family, friends, coworkers, etc) seeing. Even something as normal as self-pleasuring is extremely embarrassing to have your mom or boss see. As the episode progressing, we get the feeling that the punishment outweighs the crime and saying to ourselves that he should cut his losses and have the footage leaked. It's embarrassing but do that or go miles away in a strange car with a stranger? Rob a bank with a gun? Fight someone to the death? A video of you masturbating can't be that bad. We're sitting there baffled as our empathy turns into complete confusion and then the reveal.... It all makes sense. Why else would he be so desperate to cover up his act. It was perfect. Kenny's actor did such a great job portraying his desperation and helplessness, especially the moments before and during the bank robbery and his screaming and panic attacks when he is first found out. Great episode, 5/5, would watch again.

I'm not a scholar on the subject or anything, but I'm pretty sure a lot of peadophiles are "good with kids" like Kenny - it only makes sense that they would be. They idealize children's innocence and naivete and want to be with them because it's easier than dealing with somebody who is their equal. I'm generally on the "we need to differentiate between peadophiles and child molesters" and "we need treatments, not witch hunts" team, but when it was revealed at the end all my sympathy for him immediately dissolved. Watching a video of a child being sexually assulted and jerking off to it - it's just so disgusting.

@@DmanDice That argument is a bit similar to the notion of marijuana being a gateway drug, I've yet to read any psychological research finding cases where exploring urges then leads to a worsening of actions. That only seems to be the case if the person has previously grown an addiction to an activity/substance, in as far as my studies have taken me. Unfortunately, there will be a market for it no matter what's done. But, such a market doesn't have much power or traction for obvious reasons and that's the best part. Not to say we should be complacent with it happening, I'm just meaning to say that Kenny's exploration of it doesn't necessarily mean it's gaining any of the previously mentioned. I also can't just say he wouldn't take any actions or condemn him being arrested, it may be for the best.

I love this analysis. I don't think the end is necessarily supposed to make you "hate" Kenny. It's throwing your preconceptions into the blender. It's making you question whether otherwise "good" people, or at least humans you could otherwise sympathize with, have dark evils inside them. It made me question myself. What if the darkest depths of my own personality or perversions were exposed for all to see? The things that are so private to us we maybe don't even admit to ourselves, don't identify with? Especially when thinking in relation to pornography, it is so easy to avoid thinking of it as taking an active role. This same commentary is brought up in other episodes of Black Mirror - the twisted voyeurism of the girl in White Bear and the twitter users of Hated in the Nation who did not hold themselves accountable for the vigilante deaths that they hashtagged in support of. Perhaps we could imagine that Kenny, like many of us, thought that because he was "only watching" and not participating that he could escape the blame of being an active participant. But of course if we assume this is real child porn, that means real children were abused for it to be made. Are we a bit like Kenny in our own ways? By viewing "anonymously," we have a false sense of not being active participants when really, we still are.

Kenny is portrayed as a decent, innocent and overall nice person. He seems to be extra sensitive, hence why he flips out so drastically over the messages and the threat of his video being leaked. The writers are genius for doing this, because it effectively makes the viewer sympathise and root for Kenny to stop his video being leaked. However, the twist comes at the final moment and we realise Kenny does deserve to be caught and exposed, so we feel instantly bad and guilty ourselves for supporting a paedophile. This episode is by far my favourite, mainly because it holds suspense, but also I love how ironic the whole concept is. The hackers use troll faces as a way of delivering the moral and want to teach the “victims” not to take their lives for granted. However, us viewers also receive our own troll faces towards the end as we realise we’ve been manipulated and tricked into supporting Kenny the whole time. It just goes to show how easily we can be manipulated as a society by the influence of technology and our unawareness of it.

When they introduced Hector, an adult who had done something much worse than what I thought Kenny did, I thought that the episode would end with the two of them being forced to choose one of them to die and that Hector would kill Kenny because Kenny had less to lose, since all he did was look at (what I assumed was normal) porn. I thought that the hackers were just monsters using Kenny as an easy target because he's a scared teenager. Then the other pedophile asked "How young were they?" and I realized that the entire narrative had been manipulating me from the start. The use of trollface was solid, as well. I disagree with you about Kenny's actions being harmless though. If there was no audience for child porn, it wouldn't be made. Kenny is part of the audience and by contributing to demand, he is enabling supply, which makes his actions quite harmful. I also am skeptical that he would have gone his whole life never actually abusing a child himself; indulging his desires by looking at the images would just further normalize it in his mind, and maybe get him worked up until he feels the need to find his own victim to experience the real thing, I think. Also: what the hell was he thinking, googling "malware removal" and just downloading the first thing that popped up? That had me yelling at the TV almost as much as the big reveal.

The scariest part of the episode to me is how smugly SADISTIC the blackmailer is indicated to be. This unseen figure clearly relishes being able to terrify, torment and control people. It's really not about "righting wrongs", because the blackmailer makes Kenny and the others commit MORE wrongs, like robbery and murder. Whatever these people originally did, there's a difference between proper delivery of justice and just playing a big cruel fixed game with the accused. It kind of reminds me of the Sherlock Holmes story about Milverton, the "king of blackmailers". Even after encountering so many murderers and criminals, Sherlock has more disgust for Milverton than any of them. Food for thought.

Well, yeah it would be wrong if the crimes were dangerous. The bank robbery was done with a pistol that had no bullets in it, and the fight was between two pedophiles so regardless the murder would happen to either one of them who deserve to die. Notice how only the pedophiles are forced to fight each other to the death, the guy looking for a prostitute or the woman with racist emails were simply just used for advancing the eventual fight between the pedos.

That is a widely spread myth. Also, not all cp involves hurting children, like the Ukrainian studio that got raided in 2004 shot just young girls in the nude in agreed upon settings after negotiating with their parents. The harder material is produced by people trying to justify their actions and the FBI has by now dealt with most of that. This logic is also like "gun manufacturers are contributing to school shootings". Yeah, in a way but that doesn't make them liable for murder.

If you looked at Kenny's e-mails you could see that he had been planning on buying a camera, this implies that Kenny was already starting to escalate in his disgusting endeavors, considering he also works at a fast food restaurant where there are a lot of children pretty often, and that he goes out of his way to build trust with them; this means he didn't just want to consume CP, he wanted to make it. I also find it notable that this episode was published at the height of multiple huge dark web Cyber Chomo Rings being exposed and their most notable members and owners be arrested, such as Peter Scully, Richard Huckle, Matthew David Graham, Shannon McCoole and Eric Marques. No doubt the creators of this episode based Kenny on Matthew Graham and if not, then coincidences with this show have happened before (The National Anthem).

The kid is not even a full-fledged adult, empirical testing on his demographic and basic common sense would make the assumption safe to make. If you are afraid he will eventually turn into someone who pays for such things, maybe deal with the source of the problem (immaturity, mental issues, etc). Porn images (different than videos) are usually not paid by the view because in our case the money would have to come from advertisements and in the case of images you can't count that accurately. Sure, there are cases against both assumptions, but you shouldn't focus on these outliers you should take what's most probable and find the best solution

+Jennifer Ramirez the trolls obviously saw the child porn too otherwise they wouldn't know that Kenny could get in trouble for what he was watching. yet as far as we know they never saw justice, they could have jerked off as many times as they wanted or shared it with as many people as they wanted, but their anonymity automatically makes them the good guy? Also where are the studies saying that without demand there would be no child porn can you link them? Or at least tell me what the logic is because I don't see it. There is a demand for lots of awful/illegal stuff: When Obama was president a lot of Republicans said they'd be happy if they saw a video of his head getting chopped off. Murdering is illegal especially the president, yet if some crazy fuck actually did find and behead Obama, would we blame these Republicans for saying they'd be happy to see it? Because that's the exact logic you're using with Kenny It doesn't make sense. Getting rid of a demand for something is impossible, penalizing people who supply something illegal simply because there is demand is much more workable. What about mass shooters getting media attention and having their crazy videos shared all over? This surely creates a demand by sickos to see even more of this stuff, and even promotes more shooters who wanna get famous, and as far as American law is concerned news outlets and anyone with an internet connection can legally view/share these files of sociopaths mowing people down (take the Vegas shooting as a prime and recent example) Also, gore and snuff films arguably have a much higher demand and a far higher number of people willing to supply these types of videos, yet it's not regulated at all. all you have to do is type "gore" into Google images and instantly be met with real life murders, tortures, rapes, and tons of fucked up shit like that, and the statistics indicate that murders tortures and rapes are far more common of a crime than child porn, so why is it so much easier and basically legal to Google a far more common crime that kills and hurts many more than child porn? If Kenny had instead watched "2 guys 1 hammer" he would have ended up watching a man being stabbed repeatedly in the face with a screwdriver and beaten in and out of consciousness with a hammer by 2 young boys (completely real) and he never would have been in trouble for anything, because you can still easily find "2 guys 1 hammer" on Google (don't look it up). I bring this up because it really points out your flaw in your supply and demand theory, because some dude on the internet ACTUALLY paid these young boys to videotape murders of multiple people and post it online, there was a real demand for this type of video, and still is, yet this video can be found by any 12 year old dumb enough to look it up, and that 12 year old could in theory enjoy it or jerk off to it without ever facing any punishment.

I thought the troll face was perfect. It really drove it home to me that this situation could happen in real life. Maybe not quite so extreme, but it made me believe that some of the trolls I met on the internet really would do this just for their own personal amusement if they could. I mean people have called swat teams on streamers that have resulted in deaths just for their amusement (not that the troll thought it would go that far).

To be fair, the only information we were ever given is that he was "looking at kids." There's never a mention of child pornography, only that Kenny looked at imagery of young children that was on his laptop. There is enough legal imagery you can find online of minors, so there is a possibility he never committed a criminal act until he tried robbing the bank.
@ItsAv3rageGamer
@ItsAv3rageGamer 6 жыл бұрын
I think it was actual child porn though, since I think the mother said at the end his sister found it on his laptop, this also makes sense as when she goes to borrow his laptop he gets really defensive. Watching child porn is ultimately illegal, and downloading it and watching it is what keeps the demand for it up. However, I'm more of the opinion that these people need help and therapy more so than being locked away forever. As we do this already and it doesn't work.
@cHeStEr5434
@cHeStEr5434 6 жыл бұрын
From what I recall, the reason he got angry with his sister for borrowing his laptop was because she infected it with malware. He therefore downloads anti-malware software, which allows the hacker to seize control of his device. That said, another possibility is that the hacker just wanted to set him up and mess with him. If I were a kid and someone was gonna send a video of me masturbating to everyone I knew, I'd probably feel compelled to do what they say. In the scene where Kenny masturbates, he only types around 10 characters into a search engine. Now, I've never looked up child pornography, but I've read up enough about the Deep Web to know that you have to do much more digging than that. As a viewer, I was able to feel bad for Kenny, because I felt that that situation could happen to anyone. I mean the hackers sent a freakin' troll face in the end, it's not like they're truly fighting for justice.

I think that the episode shows a grey area of justice since the hackers are just as bad as Kenny because Kenny watches people suffering for his own enjoyment but so do the hackers making 2 people fight to the death for their own enjoyment. That's why I hate when people call the hackers heroes since they are just as evil.

I think it definitely was vigilante justice, but is that justified? Also Hector has kids so it was a crewel joke from the hackers to pair him up with Kenny. His crime wasn't as bad (prostitution) which would explain why he got to go home before the fight and was only the getaway driver, not the robber. Kenny is also never able to quite do something right: he must abandon his bike, enter the pin twice and piss himself. These minor inconveniences really emphasise how he's at odds to the whole world. I'm pretty sure Kenny killed the guy in the woods because the hackers deemed paedophilia worthy of death (and not a mental illness). The punishments seem to be an eye for an ear, of course it's debatable which one is of more value. About he guy giving Kenny cake, I wonder what his crime was because he got off the easiest it seems but that night was called a pervert by his family. Overall, a lot to chew on and question its justification.

I always assumed that Hector was likely seeing underage prostitutes. Maybe even children prostituted through human trafficking? I wouldn't think he would "deserve" such vicious punishment otherwise. But maybe that's my own belief seeping in that consensual sex work is just as legitimate as any other job.

Should have microwaved his laptop immediately then claimed innocence to the police. Just say that the hackers put that data on his computer and that he is being framed. Considering he could prove they exists (afterall, it was the hackers who informed the police), he has enough plausible deniability to avoid the consequences.

Just claim that he could clearly see that the hackers were trying to frame him and that he was panicing. Again, it doesn't have to be completely believable, it just needs to provide reasonable doubt in a courtroom setting. Can a jury say, with a 95+% level of confidence that the blackmailers aren't also framing him?
@arandombard1197

He mentioned it was 'just a picture' so probably not. He could just claim that the video of him jacking off was to regular porn and they they have just edited it together with the illegal content. As far as the world is aware, he is just some nice kid who has never committed a crime or done anything suspicious. The hackers are proven blackmailers who hide behind screens and would refuse to arrive in person to defend their evidence. Again, he just needs plausible deniability.

Confounded and mildly disturbed by the amount of comments voicing unconditional support for the hackers in this episode. Obviously consuming CP is horrible, indefensible, and Kenny should serve time. But they put him in a position where he has to kill another pedophile or have his pedophilia revealed to everyone in his life. I thought it was pretty clear that the hackers weren't motivated by justice or criminal deterrence, but by gross vindictiveness and enjoyment, like a blood sport. It's not a black and white issue; both Kenny and the hackers' actions are despicable, and just because one party is in the wrong doesn't mean the other is in the right. I think the episode is confronting the people that say "All pedophiles deserve the worst possible death" with a conceivable horrific reality of what that might look like and calling their bluff.

For all the people feeling bad for Kenny. He was a pedophile, I'm not talking about 13 or 15 year olds. It is clearly little KIDS, like her mother shouts in the end. That kind of KIDS he gives the toy in the beginning. So yeah, he deserved it all. Its sickening to see you even feel sorry for him. On the other hand, the man who cheated on his wife, yes he is an asshole. But considering the possible aftermath(losing his kids), he didn't deserve it.

I wonder how you would react if you started getting attracted to kids when you were a teen. Would you tell your parents and seek medical help? Or would you be fuckin scared for life and resort to porn? What the episode made me realize is that there are problably lots of ppl in the same place as kenny, and if society was a bit less stupid we would ensure these people were given treatment as it's not their choice to feel what they feel (ps. I'm talking about non-commiting pedophiles, those who abuse children should be taken account by their action harshly.)

Idk, there's a big difference between having a psychological affliction and completely resisting the temptation to act on it vs watching porn vs actually abusing and hurting children. Had he been in the third category, I say he deserved all of this and worse, but he's not. Obviously children are being hurt and violated to create the videos he was watching; he deserves some form of punishment for supporting some of the most vile and despicable shit on this planet, but this was psychological torture at the hands of immature sociopaths. At Kenny's stage I think mandatory therapy and rehabilitation would be an appropriate response, so yeah, I kinda felt bad for him. Maybe think about how it would feel to realize you have the most reviled and hated affliction in the fucking world when you're like 17 years old?
