although the British Museum as well as lots of other museums in Europe and North America have lots of cultural relics stolen from China, this one is not true, unfortunately. His incarnation is Lingji Bodhisattva, a made up Buddha in 'Journey to the West', so there will not be a real sculpture of him.
This guy was not singing in standard mandarin accent, it was Northern Shan xi province accent. So yes, he does have a strong accent in Chinese just like Scottish in English world.

I grew up with this type of music, so I can probably share a few words about it. It's rooted in northern Shaanxi, an area characterized by sandy mountains. That's why the music evokes the feeling of wild deserts and rugged mountains-that is where the music is born. Decades ago, groups of performers would travel across villages and towns on special occasions to perform this kind of music. The singing typically told stories from old times or new stories created by the performers themselves. For most people back then, this was one of the few forms of entertainment and one of the few ways to learn about the world beyond their small village. The harsh reality is that many of these performers were actually people with disabilities, such as blindness. This resonates with the NPC of the headless monk. These individuals likely took up performing because they couldn’t engage in more typical occupations like farming to make a living. Life was hard back then, but it was also full of happiness. I miss it so much. I’ve been thinking about picking this up as a hobby myself, so my kids know their roots.

The headless Bodhisattva here is Lingji Bodhisattva, one of the eight major Bodhisattvas in Buddhism. In ancient times, Buddhism was very prosperous in China, and there were numerous Buddhist statues in temples and grottoes across the country. However, most of these statues had their heads cut off because the heads were considered the most valuable parts, both artistically and research-wise. Now, you can find these heads in museums in Western countries. In the past two centuries, Western countries have seized a large number of historical artifacts from Asia and Africa through wars. The British Museum alone houses over 20,000 Chinese artifacts, which are only given simple numbers without detailed descriptions. To attract tourists, the British Museum even allows people to touch these foreign artifacts without any protection. We sincerely hope that Western countries will return these war-looted artifacts to their original countries.

I never imagined that the art form beloved by elders in my childhood hometown could become known worldwide through a game. Hearing the familiar dialect and local accent is truly moving. Shaanbei Shuoshu (陕北说书, Shuoshu means storytelling) is a form of storytelling and singing art from the northern Shaanxi province of China. It features the unique dialect of northern Shaanxi and northern Shanxi provinces(陕西 and 山西, yes, they sound very familiar and located closely). The instrument played is called Sanxian(三弦), meaning "three-stringed lute." The storyteller also ties a small wood clapper to their leg, shaking it to the rhythm - that's the source of the "ding-ding" sound in the background. It's incredible to see our local culture showcased here!😃

During the Second Opium War waged by the British and the French military, whereupon they looted, plundered hundreds of thousands of national treasures of China, dating back since Shang Dynasty, through Tang Dynasty, well into Ming and Qing Dynasties.
The reason the game dev designed this character this way is the head of the statue of this deity is kept in the Great Britain Museum looted by the British. A very subtle protest.

His name is Lingji Bodhisattva/Buddha. In the original literature work (Journey to the West), the Golden Wind Sage was originally a gold rat guai who stole the lamplight from the Heavenly Court and was given to him to be made a disciple. Later in the book, when Sun Wukong faces off against the Golden Wind Guai/Sage, he got blinded from the guai's Samadha Wind (yes, ***that*** Samadha, similar to the Samadha Flames) and had to ask Lingji to help, who gave him a tool to disperse the guai's wind and ultimately winning him the fight.

The 72 Earthly Evil Techniques that Sun Wukong knows refer to 1. Passing through the secluded places: Passing through the secluded places means being able to go to and from hell freely. Everyone knows that going to hell is not difficult, but coming back is not so easy. If you master the skill of passing through the secluded places, you can go to hell to play at will. Sun Wukong was able to go to the King of Hell to change the Book of Life and Death, so he used this method. 2. Expelling gods: Expelling gods. 3. Carrying mountains: It means being able to carry the weight of a mountain. Sun Wukong was able to survive under the Five Fingers Mountain because of this method. 4. Forbidding water: Being able to pass through water unimpeded. Although it is unimpeded, Sun Wukong's attack power in water battles is not as good as Sha Wujing, and his ability is even more limited in special waters such as the Flowing Sand River. In the end, Guanyin had to come forward to settle it. After all, everyone has their own expertise and abilities. 5. Borrowing wind: Being able to drive the wind. 6. Spreading fog: As the name suggests, it means making fog appear wherever you want. 7. Pray for clear weather: can make rainy days clear. 8. Pray for rain: when Tang Monk and his three disciples were fighting in Chechi Kingdom, Sun Wukong competed with Huli Daxian in praying for rain. 9. Sitting on fire: not afraid of fire. 10. Entering water: diving into the deep sea. 11. Covering the sun: can avoid the strong light of the sun. 12. Riding the wind: can ride the wind, the "flying skill" in Journey to the West. 13. Boiling stones: alchemy. Can make elixirs. 14. Breathing flames: can spit fire. 15. Swallowing a knife: can eat a knife into the stomach. 16. Pot sky: the small space in the pot can become the sky, can become smaller. 17. Divine movement: the spirit transcends the body and swims freely. 18. Walking on water: walking on the water. 19. Staff: You can abandon your body and go to heaven, or you can escape without leaving your body and just pretend to have an object (such as clothes, staff, sword) to escape. Sun Wukong often escapes by this. 20. Clone: Not only can you create multiple versions of yourself. You can also create multiple versions of other objects. 21. Invisibility: Invisibility. 22. Continuation: You can do this, so Sun Wukong can grow back after being beheaded. 23. Immobilization: There is no problem using this to deal with small monsters. 24. Demon-slaying: Many ghosts and monsters have no physical body. You can chop them by practicing this. 25. Invite the immortals: This depends on your character, and of course your strength, to invite the immortals to help you! 26. Chasing the soul: You can see the soul and track it. 27. Capturing the soul: You can find the soul and eat the soul. 28. Summoning the cloud: Summoning the cloud. 29. Take the moon: Take the moon with one hand. 30. Transport: Can quickly transport things from one place to another, like pushing mountains and filling the sea. 31. Marry a dream: A kind of illusion. Let the other party fall into a nightmare and mentally destroy the other party. 32. Disintegrate: Can separate various parts of the body without any damage. This is why Sun Wukong cannot be killed. 33. Send the stick: Can send the hit of the stick to another object to escape the pain. 34. Stop the flow: Stop the flow of rivers. Sun Wukong used this method to help Tang Seng cross the river. 35. Avert disasters: Use magic to eliminate the disasters faced. 36. Relieve disasters: Rescue dangers. 37. Huangbai: The so-called magic of the sorcerer to turn elixir into gold and silver. 38. Swordsmanship: The method and technique of using a sword. Therefore, most Taoist weapons are swords. 39. Shooting covers: Divination and guessing objects. 40. Earth movement: moving freely in the earth. 41. Star number: being able to observe the stars at night and know one's destiny. 42. Formation: various barriers and formations to trap the enemy. In the third fight with the White Bone Demon, Sun Wukong drew a circle on the spot for Tang Seng. The White Bone Demon turned into a girl, but could not come forward. This circle is the formation. 43. False form: the art of transformation, one of Sun Wukong's most commonly used moves, and he used it to the extreme. 44. Spraying: using magic to point at an object and make it change. 45. Finger transformation: using a finger to change something. 46. Corpse transformation: after Taoists attain the Tao, they can abandon their bodies and become immortals, or leave behind a body and only pretend to be an object (such as clothes, staff, sword) and ascend to heaven. 47. Scenery shifting: a trick, also known as illusion. 48. Summon: being able to summon something by remote control. In Journey to the West, there is an episode where the king wanted to capture the four masters and apprentices pretending to be merchants. After the misunderstanding was resolved, the clothes and boxes used for pretending flew back to their original positions by themselves. This is what they used. 49. Erqu: can make items return. 50. Gathering beasts: various wild beasts can obey your orders. Sun Wukong tamed the celestial horses with this. 51. Adjusting birds: can tame various birds. 52. Qi ban: can not breathe air. 53. Dali: infinite strength. It is powerful enough to be able to play Dinghai Shenzhen. 54. Penetrating stones: can pass through stones. It is more unobstructed when walking on the earth. 55. Shengguang: eyes can emit strong light. 56. Zhanfu: practice inner alchemy. 57. Daoyin: "Dao" refers to "guiding qi", guiding qi makes it harmonious; "Yin" refers to "leading the body", leading the body makes it soft. 58. Taking food: Anything can be swallowed and it is beneficial and harmless. 59. Breaking the wall: Can pass through the wall. 60. Leaping the rock: Can jump high and long. 61. Cute head: Grow a new head. 62. Climbing the copy: Quickly grab something. 63. Drinking water: Drinking as much water as you want is fine. If Jingwei knew this, she wouldn't have to fill the sea. 64. Lying in the snow: Lying in the snow. 65. Exposing to the sun: Can be exposed to the sun. 66. Playing with pills: Nine out of ten are doctors. In Journey to the West, there are several episodes where Sun Wukong can cure diseases, diagnose pulses with a thread, prescribe medicine, and play with pills. 67. Talisman water: Draw or burn talismans in water, and drink it to cure diseases. 68. Medicine: Chinese and Western medicine and surgical operations. 69. Knowing time: Equivalent to having your own watch or clock. 70. Geospatial knowledge: You can also bring your own maps and pointers. 71. Fasting: Don’t be afraid of not eating or drinking. 72. Nightmare prayer: Use nightmares to defeat the enemy.

connecting the dots here since lots of players say that the story doesn’t make sense. So this headless guy is actually Bodhisattva Lingji who guarded one of Sun Wukong’s 6 senses. Sun Wukong, not the MC, but the one who was still under a rock in Mount Huaguo (remember the end of the intro?) is still trapped because his 6 senses scattered when he was fell from the sky. The MC, the “young sage”, is on his journey to collect all 6 of the lost senses, one from each chapter. 6 senses being sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch and the literal “sixth sense” - extrasensory perception. MC tries to restore the 6 senses and release Wukong from that rock! All the destroyed Bodhisattva statues and temples suggest that the yaoguais had defeated the buddhas and taken over this world. That’s why there humans was all zombie like or turned into lesser guais.

If you watch the plot carefully enough you will realize this headless singer was the real villain and lying all the time in this chapter. He says at the end of this chapter that the rat chanced upon one of Wukong's relics, but actually, in the last chapter, we can see that the rat was assigned to this relic by the Celestial Court after Wukong's death. Also, all the rats here in this chapter were the nationals of this country, and this headless Bodhisattva punished them into rats for trying to reform their country, etc.

He must be feeling ichy ichy inside his neck... like how we feel when the sand went into our running shoes after a walk at the beach. Probably this is why he left so quicky, he gotta go somewhere without anyone presence and fix his neck all over again!

Two years ago, during a business trip to China, I experienced an unforgettable week in a small town. The morning sun filtered through the leaves, filling the air with a fresh, sweet scent. The purity of the air, free from pollution, brought a sense of happiness and peace. The locals' commitment to environmental protection preserves the land's natural beauty. If we all cared for the environment as they do, our world would be a better place.
