It's funny to see ppl mention Goku when Wukong riding the cloud, which they aren't wrong, Goku in Japanese translate to Wukong, and the author of DBZ was inspired by Chinese's Wukong Mythology to created DBZ with Saiyan being monkey and shits. Also ppl mentioned Naruto shadow clones when Wukong uses his, don't they know Wukong is the original, and the master of clones lol. In Chinese mythology, Wukong has the ability to turn his hair in to clones of ANYTHING, and he has over 80 thousand hairs on his body, he himself can also transform into anything he wants, even transform into his opponents. And that's barely one of his most broken abilities that he has, which is why no gods in Chinese myth can beat him, only a few can fight him equally, but he's immortal over immortal, so he's unbeatable. And don't worry, this has nothing to do with the game's story, so I'm not spoiling anything about the game, I'm just saying Wukong is just him, one of the strongest characters EVER written.

I live in China as a foreigner, and this game is everywhere! It's even commercialized in coffee shops and other spots-truly a blast to see how widespread it is. If you're familiar with Chinese culture, Wukong has deep roots in their mythology, and I think this game is one of the coolest ways to introduce that to the West.

Im from southeast asia and I dont have chinese blood but,i used to watch journey to the west from TV. The TV Station back in the day keep playing differnt serries of it and now we have game of the legendary wukong. Its sure bring back memories

It's interesting to see other cultures react to something they never seen before. I grew up on the Journey to the West series and was obsessed with this as a kid. I watched the Cantonese version starring Dky Cheung as the actor (can't say his first name lol). Will say there are a lot of themes that differ drastically from Western fairytales (as this is a mythology), so it's really fascinating to compare the two - like the Wukong series vs Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter, two ocult fantasies in the West. I also read the original novel by Wu Cheng'en and felt like the movies couldn't even compare to the writing alone. There is a lot of intricate details about the characters, environment, and interactions that got me so in love with the series. It's going to be an interesting rollercoaster to see how people react to this.

I have read through numerous comments, and most of the attention is focused on Sun Wukong's various abilities. However, in Chinese culture, people like Sun Wukong more because he is naturally kind-hearted, knows right from wrong, has independent thinking when facing things between humans, gods, and demons, understands good and evil, and still maintains his original intention after being pressed down by the Buddha for 500 years. He still protects his master wholeheartedly along the way while maintaining his own judgment about good and evil. You can see this specifically in the chapter where Sun Wukong kills robbers to protect farmers before putting on the tightening hoop curse. It’s not a spell, it’s the headband that the Buddha gave to the monk tangshen who placed on wukong as a way to control him after he freed wukong, since wukong is so powerful and uncontrollable, now every time he is out of line the monk just need to chant and the headband will tighten to such a degree it gives wukong a severe headache that he can no longer function. But at the end of journey to the west, the headband was removed as wukong finally understood what it means to be kind and just from the journey / his master the monk. So I am not sure why the headband all of sudden reappeared magically as he is falling, also it suppose to be a physical headband not just appear out of thin air…..I guess we will find out in this game It’s hilarious reading westerners comments trying to understand this game, the story really isn’t for westerners you need to understand a lot of the background and lore tied to journey of the west to appreciate the game, even native Chinese like me has trouble understand some of the meaning in the game and I just started. Add on the horrible English dub and forget it. I guess just enjoy the graphic and action of a well made game and don’t try to understand the story too much.

To some extend, this is the original One Piece written 500 years ago. Featuring characters not like Whitebeard and Akainu, but like Gautama Buddha and Lao Tzu. The main character is not Monkey D Luffy, but an actual monkey. The journey was not to find One Piece, but the greatest literatures of enlightenment from the Buddha himself. They did not sail the Grandline, they journeyed to the west on foot, fighting legendary monsters along the way. And btw, Journey to the West itself was inspired by the true event of the Tang monk Xuanzang journeying on foot India to bring back the greatest Buddhism literatures to China.

The Cities development and landscape is beautiful. Big kudos to the hard working chinese people. But on my recent visit, you cannot escape the smell of tobacco everywhere, meaning non smoking hotel have ashtrays. I cannot walk peacefully through a nice street without blaring announcement over and over. Workers calling you left and right to eat at their establishment, solicited by many taxi drivers & hotel owner following me at night to use their service. I know they are harmless but very unpleasant to be seen as a target. Any nice place is crowded by so much people and cigarettes smell that the beauty in the background become lost. At the end of my trip I feel exhausted & stress. I was disappointed that I couldn't have peace, quiet and clean air even at beautiful place like Westlake, Hangzhou. On the good side, the monetary and transportation system is efficient. Government staff are helpful & patient. Seniors are enjoying themselves. Couples are happy, kids are outspoken and cleaning efforts can be seen, my 2cent.

Ok imma try to give as most context as I can: Long time ago there’s was a rock born from heaven sitting in a mountain, one day a monkey was born out of it, he latter founds a group of monkeys and he becomes their king later the monkey releases that he’s not immortal so he goes in a journey to be imortal, in the way he learns tricks from a teacher in a town, that gives him abilities to transform and duplicate ect, (this is where he gets the name of Sun wukong) until one day Wukong broke his teacher promise of not ever using his abilities to be famous, so the teacher kicks him out, wukong decides to continue his journey of power and immortality, he keep fighting demons and exploring until he founds a palace underwater, he goes in and ask for a weapon he almost didn’t found one until the king gave wukong the magic staff, but wukong wanted armor too so the king, scared called other palaces, they came thinking they were going to fight until the king told them to not engage “he’s too strong,” so they all agree and give wukong pieces of armor, after wukong leaves the kings tells what happens to the gods of heaven and “hell” and they obviously get pissed off so hell takes wukong there, wukong founds a type of temple that has a book, on that books there’s the names of every creatures so he founds his name and the names of his family’s and cross them, this gives wukong 1 point of imortality, after this he goes back to his family but heaven not trusting wukong tells him to come to heaven, wukong agrees, the gods give wukong the job of a stable man, for wukong he thought this was amazing but in reality this was the worst rank on heaven, wukong gets super pissed and leaves, he gets back home and to wukong it’s been just a few months but for his family it’s been years, so they throw a party, the gods (trying to control Wukong) tells wukong to come back that they have a higher rank job to give to Wukong, wukong again agrees and goes, the job is basically to protect a tree, that tree has the peaches of immortality, and it’s wukong job to protect it, wukong agrees and protects the tree until one day a group of ladies come to the tree, asking wukong for a few peaches, wukong ask why and they tell him that the gods are having a party and he is not invited, after the ladies leave Wukong gets super pissed to he eats all of the peaches, this makes him immortal by a bunch of times then he goes to the party (which it haven’t started) and drinks the kings wine of immortality he also goes to the kitchen and eats a bunch of pill of immortality he founds, after he sobers up he relies in the amount of problems he is in so he runs away back to his family, the gods of heaven extremely pissed wants to kill Wukong so Wukong and a group of soldiers that he has goes and fights a bunch of gods he ends up wining so the king had to call Buddha, a then buddha puts in a prison for 500 yrs. One day a monk named Tang Sanzang was “talking to Buddha” aperently there was a war going on and they had to stop it, Buddha gives the monk Tang Sanzang a bunch of scriptures, if someone ever read those scriptures they would be come peaceful no matter what, but there’s was a problem he had to go to the west and a bunch of demons wants to kill Tang Sanzang because they believe they will be immortal if they do this, so Buddha gives Tang Sanzang a group of body guards first (Sun Wukong) then a god that haves been kicked from heaven then cursed to turned into a half human half pig (Zhu Bajie), and a cursed half human half fish (Sha Wujing) before they left Buddha put on them a golden headband, this would help Tang Sanzang so if they tried something the golden headband would squeeze causing a lot of pain. this formed the trio that would help Tang Sanzang through the journey to the west. (I’m going to skip ahead because I would be texting this all day) when they finally get to the west the trio are finally set free and found peace, this is where black myth wukong kicks in, after wukong comes back to his family for some reason the gods of heaven started killing wukongs family, this pisses a lot wukong so he goes amd tries to fight them but loses, a few centuries later a recantation of sun wukong is born called the destined one, his job is to find all wukong artifacts to posibly revive him. This took ages to type, sorry if I was wrong in some stuff (I’m new to jurney to the west) I would appreciate if you found something wrong to tell me since I’m also learning, also sorry if my English isn’t perfect I’m still learning, I had to skip a loooot of stuff from journey to the west because the book is really really long, but I really recommend it, also I really recommend this game, I stared playing and it’s amazing. Edit: just finished the game and if you didn’t understand here’s is my opinion on what the ending was, there’s currently 2 endings one is the bad ending and the other one is the true ending. When you enter the rock it’s reveal the sun wukong always had the golden headband and cause lots of pain, after jurney to the west the gods tricked him into thinking that he doesn’t have the golden headband anymore, he comes back to his maintain but the gods didn’t trust sun wukong so they started killing his own people sun wukong gets mad and fights the gods, that’s were the golden headband activates and makes sun wukong loose, sun wukong dies, some people say that he killed himself others say the he didn’t really die only his body the point is that he looses and the gods separates parts of wukong into 6 pieces called relics, the important part is that one relic is missing, that relic is us that’s why we look exactly like sun wukong, the old monkey wanted the destined one to find all the relics so he becomes the new sun wukong, after the old monkey explains all of that we found sun wukong but this version of sun is like a dead version of him, the destined one fights him and wins wich makes the destined one the new sun Wukong, after the fight the old man puts the golden head band on this new sun wukong witch means that we basically replace sun wukong place and now we are the ones trapped in the rock that’s why this is the bad ending because we are being controlled by gods and trapped on the rock with the golden headband on, (some people thinks that the old man may be working with the gods to have a more controlled version of sun Wukong but this is just a theory nothing is confirmed). now the true ending, you can only get it if you fight the secret bosses in one of the chapter, basically you fight all of the big massive gods and Erlang that were controlling sun wukong, after that when you go back to the rock and go inside after defeating sun wukong the old man doesn’t put the golden headband on this new sun wukong, witch signifies that he’s not getting controlled by the gods and he’s also not trapped in the rock, something that sun wukong always wanted, after that we get a séquense of the old sun wukong memories, this animation story is being told from the end to the start it’s basically backwards. Don’t be sad technically sun wukong isn’t 100% dead, sun wukong is part of this destined one, it’s almost like if a father gives his son his armor. there so many theories on what this ending truly means and what the destined one (sun wukong) will do next, hopefully we get more endings on dlc or updates .

A long story before all of this, like how he became what you see here, and how to became immortality and where he got his stick (weapon) which can hide inside his ear. How he got sealed under the mountain etc.. it's very deep meaning and many of Chinese grew up with this story and theories which make this game one of its kinds. The story of the intro is, it is far after the tourney to the west. Wakong is already one of the Above (usually we say god), but he didn’t like it. Wanted to go back to the ground and stay with family(monkeys) and take care of them. But the Aboves cannot feel safe without Wukong standing their side as he is too powerful and can be a threat, an unstable factor because there is possibility he would fight against them someday. So the lord of above sent Erlang, leading an army to bring him back or kill him and then what happened as you saw. Actually Erlang is not a random guy. He had his own myth story. His mother was kept under a mountain, so he went though adventures to save his mother, got third eye on the way which can see far and can use as weapon. Finally he used the axe cut the mountain half and saved his mother and he became one of the aboves. Which explains why he uses axe as weapon.

The biggest one is Julin-Shen the Tremendous Spirit, a giant vanguard of heaven's army, obeying general Li Jin, he was the first god to challenge wukong last time, but lost almost immediately. Wukong smashed Julin's weapon, but he escaped thanks to General Li's son, Nezha. General Li was so angry about Julin being a deserter, even wanted to have him executed, again Nezha saved him, persuaded his father to spare Julin because even he couldn't defeat Wukong. In the end, only Erlang (Jade Emperor's nephew) can fight Wukong as equal. Yang Jian, aka Erlang, the Jade Emperor's demigod nephew, has a goddess mother and a mortal father, with a magical third-eye, keeps a hound named Xiaotian (Sky Howler). His mother was punished and sealed under Mount Tao for uniting with a lowly human, so he cleaved the entire mountain in half to save her. He is usually described as a man of gentle and honor, strange for him to act like a dick in the game's intro. Li Nezha, third born of General Li Jin, known for slaying the dragon prince Ao Bin, son of king Ao Guang (who was robbed by Wukong, of the staff and the armor). Nezha appears as a young lad wearing crimson, wielding the Fire-Tip Lance, and can transform into three-head-six-arm. There were times that he were just as rebellious as Wukong. Wukong, Erlang and Nezha are known as the three troublemakers of the Celestial Court. One challenged the heaven, one cleaved a mountain, and one wrought havoc in the ocean. They may listen to the Court, but they do not take commands. If the Court wants their service, say "please".

4:24 Erlang Shen is one of the more well known Gods in the traditional Chinese folks religion and in Taoism. He’s often depicted as a handsome young man with the third eye that seeks Truth and accompanied by a very loyal black hunting hound. I have once been in a temple in Southeast Asia where they painted Erlang with a German Shepherd 😂. That was… unique, to say the least. Anyway, this is the thing about Chinese movie makers and game developers; Erlang Shen is supposed to be a noble, righteous, just, charismatic, charming, and powerful divine being (deified human) who’s out to destroy demons and monsters. He’s upright and also very filial (filial piety is a thing in many Asian cultures). But the movie or game writers often write him as a cocky, almost like a jerk kind of guy; evil even. Strange, because unlike the Norse gods, there are still many people who worship and pray to Erlang Shen and yeah, that includes a lot of people in China - like really a lot.

Just sharing some info to make it easier to understand. Wukong was also known as the stone monkey. He was born from a stone that has absorbed eons of divine energy. 4:40 Yes, that's the third eye (or divine eye). That gentleman is a deity (二郎神) who has bested Wukong before the story of "Journey to the West" and the black dog is his companion the divine dog (天狗） 12:18 That circlet on his head hurts him because it was a divine artifact used as a tool to bring him under control when he was tamed to follow the monk on the journey to the west. It was given to the monk by the bodhisattva Guanyin and it has a chant to tighten it around Wukong's head and cause extreme pain.

Add little bit of detail, the divine dog is actually 哮天犬, loosely translate to Howling Celestial Dog. However, in the original novel, the dog is said to be a white color beast. There seems to be some hidden backstory (including how ErLang reacts to WuKong, as well as choice of words) from the intro, that may or may not be a plan for a sequel.

Funny he said Kage bun shin(影分身) when Wukong did his clones. The word bun shin(分身) happens to be the name of Wukong's clone jutsu in the Journey to the West novel. Not sure if Kishimoto learned it from the novel as well, but from the Naruto manga alone, he showed his familiarity to the stories. Wukong is an icon in China for his rebelliousness, courage, intelligence and optimism, etc. Everybody knows him, I mean literally everybody. I don't even remember when was I aware of his existence in the first place, I must have watched TV shows of Journey to the West before I could talk. He's also well known in other Asian countries as well. Mikka even said Goku, the Japanese pronunciation. In Korea, it's Oh-Gong, and in Vietnamese it's Ngộ Không. Until today, people in other Asian countries still prefer to call him their own ways, which is also a sign that he has been popular in Asia for centuries. I feel happy to see the oriental cultures get recognized by the rest of the world. It's truly a Journey to the West. Enjoy the game, if you feel interested in Wukong, you can watch the TV shows and movies as well. There are so many of them, personally I recommend China's first Journey to the West TV show made in 1986 and the one made in Hong Kong in 2000s. You're gonna love this monkey!

It’s truly heartfelt to see so many foreign players enjoying this game. We grew up watching “Journey to the West,” whether it’s the original novel or the 1986 TV series. So, seeing so many foreign players resonate with the opening CG of this game is very touching. Additionally, when Sun Wukong transformed into a bird and suddenly had the golden headband placed on him, causing him to fall onto the mountain, the streamers didn’t seem to understand this part. I guess they haven’t figured out this detail yet.

One thing I would like to bring out is form the orignial story book, Wukong's master is Subodhi (PutiZhushi), an immortal Taoist sage who teaches Wukong the arts of transformation, combat, and mysticism. Subodhi is a wise and powerful figure, but he's also cautious. When Wukong begins to display his newfound abilities recklessly, attracting the attention of the Jade Emperor and other celestial beings, Subodhi decides to disown him. This decision is partly to protect himself and his other disciples from the backlash of Wukong's actions, but also to teach Wukong a lesson in humility and the importance of responsibility. It's a classic case of tough love.

Maybe westerners only know Goku from the Dragonball anime. We Indonesians know him as Sun Gokong or Kera Sakti from the TV series Journey to the West, to find the holy book. Because we in Indonesia also watched the series, because it used to be broadcast on our country's national TV, so we know the original story. Reminding us of memories when we were little, seeing the magical monkey with the pig we called Patkay and the stupid Wucing, and the dragon who became a horse, I forgot his name.
