I did not expect to see this after completing chapter 1... It adds a whole new depth to Jinchi for me, initially I thought he was just a greedy golem, but after realizing how tragic his dialogue was after you defeat him as a hidden boss, mixed with his whole backstory in this music video, I can't help but sympathize with him. Thank you Game Science for displaying such wonderful storytelling!

So he pretended to look as if he was no more tied to material things but this very intension itself was his bond and his tragedy is that he wasted his whole life to see at the end that he was never free of greed

Someone please explain what this chapter meant was the bear we fight the blanket wizard or what's going on??

Basically, yes. It's the bear's backstory and how the temples were ruined in the area. It also touches on another hidden boss in the area called Elder Jinchi who you can fight in the forest. Basically all the monks were corrupted by their desire for status symbols and power

The bear is the monk’s greed, he spent his whole life in pursuit of showing everybody not having material bounds getting higher and higher at the monastery realizing at the very end his failure, because to become a Buddha one must be free of all worldly ties even of the intention to become a Buddha

My understanding is a little shaky as I’m JUST learning about Journey to the West (so someone that know the book more than me can chime in and correct me) but… Basically this music video tells the tale of Elder Jinchi and how he was tempted by greed in the form of the Bear Yaoguai. Remember that Buddhist monks live in a way where they are told to let go of greed and those types of attachments. Bear Yaoguai crossed paths with child Elder Jinchi and tempts him with riches. It’s not readily apparent but that plants the seeds of greed in him for the rest of his life. He grows up to become an Elder of a temple which is like a really esteemed position. Now, in the events prior to the game in Journey to the West (I’m gonna butcher this because like I said I got the cliff notes version) the original Journey to the West gang (Tripitaka, Sun Wukong, Pigsy, Sandy, and the dragon horse) come across this temple on their titular journey to the west/ Thunderclap Temple (in the OG story they were tasked with making a pilgrimage to the west to pick up these Buddhist scrolls from TClap Temple, the actual Buddha’s estate that could enlightened even the most lost of people and then bring these scrolls back to their homeland to help people). I forget how but Tripitaka (who is actually the leader/main character of JttW, a real Boy Scout of a monk who is the reincarnation of Golden Cicada who was among Buddha’s first and very best followers) comes upon divine kasaya/blanket (actually iirc it was a kasaya given to him by the Buddah himself symbolizing his forsaking of the material world like money, treasures etc…a kasaya is basically a cloak that’s a monk’s uniform). Elder Jinchi finds it intoxicatingly beautiful and wants it bad. His greed takes over and in his avarice he decides the best way to steal Tripitaka’s Kasaya is to burn his own temple to the ground in the middle of the night killing everyone inside (including the JttW boys who are making their pit stop here as they continue their journey) in their sleep leaving him able to take the special kasaya afterward. So Sun Wukong gets wind of this plan and when disciples Guangzhi and Guangmou (another two bosses you meet in the game’s chapter 1) light the temple on fire at the behest of Elder Jinchi it kills every living person/monk inside the temple but Wukong uses the Fireproof Mantle (the first vessel you get in the game’s Chapter 1!) to completely shield his friends from the fire so they survive. As the Temple burns to the ground out of either purely losing his mind/insanity to greed or out of guilt/remorse Elder Jinchi smashes his own head with blunt force and unalives himself (hence why when you see Elder Jinchi in the game he’s got crack along his head). The game seems to insinuate the interpretation that he not only survived as…whatever he is in the game but that based on his dialogue quips he may have attempted to end himself before out of the guilt of killing all of his disciples in the temple (save for Guangzhi and Guangmou who helped him do it). That’s my very basic understanding of it that may need corrections lol.

have you read the stories you get when you defeat enemies? they kinda piece it together, especially the two demons named guang-something and obviously jinchi and the bear demon, i think some of the wolf guais also touch on it. if you haven't been reading those you should they're all really neat imo.
