It just says it all as culture goes...

I’m a gamer and come from a “western” country and I can tell you the last thing we think about while playing a game is “diversity”. We care about the story and if it ropes you in and keeps you interested, we care about game mechanics, controls and graphics. We care about the playability of a game. From what I’m hearing from the actual gamer community is nothing like what critics are saying, I’m hearing nothing but praise for this game and I intend on buying it myself 😊

While the western criticism is disingenuous, if you don’t “care about diversity”, it means you’re mostly represented in the gaming industry and the cultural representations in society at large.

If people outside China pick up on the cultural elements of the game, then great - it would be cherry on top. If not, just treat it as a normal game and judge it as either enjoyable or not. Wukong Monkey King movies and even a Jackie Chan movie in which Wukong made an appearance were my introduction to the Journey to the West. Wukong is also found as one of the gods in the video game "Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom." One of the movies shows the story of the male pregnancy and even a trans spellcaster, and the land of women. There are multiple intelligent species represented in the form of the pig demon, fish demons, etc. The thing I liked most was that the movies showed ways of thinking not common to my own background. An example is when the monk expresses how it is, to him, a welcome opportunity to suffer, because suffering is a chance to break the chains of karma, a way to pay off our karmic debts. This is a classic tale akin to the Thousand Nights or the saga of Beowulf, it shouldn't be viewed in the same light as a modern Hollywood blockbuster.

It’s fairly new that a video game is primarily made to a specific non-western audience, and the western audience may not even be the secondary audience either. But it’s good that this is happening. It is normalising future games from and for Southeast Asians, from and for Africans etc.

May I add that the original novel, Tangshen (who Wukong was escorting) was a Buddhist monk, tasked to go west to fetch holy scripts. Wukong, Bajie and Wujing became acolytes and protectors of him to accompany him on this task. Buddhist monks usually didn't have a lot om women hanging around them as part of their custom. The original story AND the game have female characters, they're just not in the maincast. Diversity is a very weird point to bring up for this material.

I slightly disagree in question of "cultural war in west" - or at least have different perspective about it. There been long problem with racism and sexism in so called "west", and for two centuries socialist, communists and other movements near to these been demanding change for that. But especially after end of USSR, in one hand, many of those who used to be socialists, communists, or similar, started shame their movements and try to hide it, and that also gave in some "corruption" in what they want or do not want (it is kind of question of opportunism: people often want to see binary, that person is opportunist or person isn't opportunist. But reality is analogic, there is opportunism probably in everyone of us, but how much. And if you lose all of what you believed, in one night...what to do after that? Many choose opportunistic ways to seek new ways to merge old ways of believe, and new hegemony). But other hand is, that those who rule the status quo, many of them sees opportunism to pretend to be "rebellious" while they are not really interested about changing things, but in opposite, make sure, that things does not really change. This means, that there been ideas, that media, entertainment industry, etc, should add x-amount of women and exploited minorities in "positive places" in fiction etc. In one hand, there is good intention to "normalise" women, or people with brown skin, etc. in important places. But those who try to implement these rules, do not really care about women, nor brown skinned people, etc. They care about PR, and how to get more money. They care about following these rules some CEO or other charlatan created. If they would really be interested about women or exploited humans, they would actually add conversations about this problems, and seek ways to answer to these problems. They won't do that. Similarity is how Germany works. They banned symbols of nazism, but they do not care if influential people create clearly neo-nazi organisations, or if police is after wrong coloured people. State of Germany do not understand what was wrong in Nazi-Germany - except losing the war. And today, they spend effort to arrest people who demand Germany to stop supporting similar horrors in Palestine. State of Germany does not see anything wrong to support genocide, but they see it wrong to demand ending support genocide. It is like psychopath tries to implement empathic ways of life, demand that everyone must live in empathic way - while the psychopath does not themselves even understand what is empathy. Same is in both, Germany's anti-nazi bans (and full support on genocide), and these acts in USA, etc, where you pretend to help women or people with different skin colour, but you do not really care about these people at all. Similar way British company "Chinese Room" (nothing to do with China, but a story about kidnapped person who does not know Chinese language, but is asked to question in Chinese, and the person must answer in Chinese, having library with Chinese words... Person needs seek answer for question what they do not know, and answer with words they do not know) made claims about Polish CD-Project RED's game "Cyberpunk 2077", that the game is sexist...before the game was even released. The company probably seeked positive PR for themselves as a "defender of women", or just make name for themselves, since Cyberpunk 2077 was really popular, unlike Chinese Room and their walking simulator games. (BTW. They released earlier in this year game. Didn't see many women in that game..? Although, I didn't watch to end the game, since I felt it was bit boring..). -- I've been personally watching let's play series about Black Myth of Wukong, so far bit over 8h, chapter 2 is still going. Very pretty game, but I wish there would be more story. But I am always after good stories. So far I've seen main character to talk only in intro. But then again... this is not type of games what I personally play - I never had good reflects or so, I prefer slower games, usually turn based strategies or tactical games. Cyberpunk 2077 are one of rare action games I played, since it is so deeply story based game. Story of V (the main character) is actually tragedy... She (or he - I played female version) became legend, because in world where she lives, corporations rules, and human life as no value, and she wanted to be something, she wanted that some people would remember her once she is dead. Desperately wanted to feel, that her life as any value, any importance. She achieved that, but also, she died because tried to achieve that. Copy of her - echo of her - stayed after her, but she herself died because she wanted to be "somebody" instead of "nobody".

@hh4560 no response I see well I got one thing to say. The way you behave and say I'm tired of this and that on things that aren't true to begin with, you are attention starved, immature, and petty and the most butthurt person I ever seen. It's like saying "oh you didn't consider putting this in the game or didn't feel the need ur sexist, racist, etc. Labeling others makes you look like the bigger asshole than you try to be. People can chose to put whatever they want with their game but whining is just immature like seriously if a piece of media is hurting you mentally ignore it

The problem with Chinese games are godless and satanic elements. Wukong included (I've seen the intro). Genshin had too much of that as well; e.g., some playable character descriptions, deity names (and some character names) are names of demons taken from The Lesser Key of Solomon. Mondstadt region story and characters are based not on medieval Europe but revolutionary France and satanic forced-equality principle. Honor of Kings has a godless story and almost all characters are, by their profile, voice lines etc., the combination of bad, godless and satanic. I think only one Chinese hero was okay, and few others who were okay were western characters such as Arthur.
