The studio called Game Science,which is a small indie game studio in china,no more than 30 people. Actually they released this video just for recruit,they need talented people to make this game,so there will be a very long time to wait. The original story written by 吴承恩（1500-1582）in Ming Dynasty. Sun Wukong(孙悟空) can summon his clones with his hair,it's one of his many abilities, And his weapon called 金箍棒 actually pull out from his ear,because it can shrink or magniy as holder‘s will. His transform ability called 72变 means he can transform into 72 different things,but 72 is only a number,he is not limited to 72,he can tranform into anything. And the way he parry is also his ability called 金刚不坏 means like steel nothing will hurt him. When he try finish the wolf,another wukong stop him,and if you are chinese,you will konw that he is actully the real Sun WuKong, the five gold shining characters appear one by one "如意金箍棒", he is holding the real 金箍棒, I cant wait to see how they will tell the story. You are right, Wukong was a badass before he joined the Journey-to-the-west team, he has done a lot of nasty things and even honored he himself as Qi Tian Da Sheng (Great Heaven Master) but in fact, he was just a monkey demon. Heaven Emperor very angry with that and called out armies to arrest him. And this is what you watched at the final gameplay trailer scene that he beat up the whole heaven armies (in Chinese mythology).

to some who don't know, Son WuKong is a character from a Chinese myth novel 400 years ago called Journey to the West. In the myth, some of his powers include riding clouds, transforming (72 forms), that magical staff he wields can lengthen and shorten, he also hides it in his ears when it's tiny. When he tears off strands of his hair, each strand can turn into a clone of himself. Oh, and let's not forget he can freeze people with words. that's all i remember for the moment. but he's pretty dope!! lots of animes are inspired by him and his story Journey to the West. Like Goku from Dragonball is pretty much WuKong (Goku is WuKong in Japanese), Naruto's shadow clones, the nine-tailed fox, Sandaime's transformation... are all inspired by WuKong.

That's him, who he was or the legend he will become. This is an inwards journey as much as it is an outward one. The mythology and lore of Wukong is an awesome and lengthy one that dates back hundreds of years. There are a lot of subtle references in this game play alone. Knowing the full story makes this game that much more appreciable.

【To understand this game, you have to know this】an over-simplified explain here: This game is a re-creation of "journey to the west", and in ancient china myth world which WUKONG lives in, humans can get supernature power to become a "god/神仙". Practicing Buddhism or Taoism is a way of becoming "god". Animals can also receive supernature power, and they become "monster/demon/妖怪", not "god". Here, monster/demon is not always evil, they are just different from humans. In many stories, the monster can live with humans or even have a marriage with a human. in those stories, humans are often more evil or stupid or greedy or coward... The rank or class of this world is roughly like this: god > monster > human > animal. This rank is a metaphor of ancient china society, but not enough room to explain it here, knowing the rank is ok. So monsters want to live in the form of a human, or at least act like a human because they are in the hope of becoming a "god". WUKONG is a monkey born from a stone who finally become a "god", he is not a "pure" god(human -> god), he remains some monster/demon characteristics. This contradiction is the source of many re-creations including this game. Back to this trailer: This trailer shows a monk tells a story that happens in a temple relic occupied by a group of monster gangsters. The giant wolf boss at 7:38 is their leader, he identifies himself as a Taoism priest, and get a Taoism name "灵虚子" or "灵虚真人" he has a friend who is a black bear. but not shown in this game. the minor boss at 2:53 is also a wolf. check his feet, you can see that he is a wolf wearing human cloth, not a human with a wolf head. the little potato-like guy at 4:49 is "土地公/local earth god", a kind of minor god. like a nymph in Greek myth, but not that pretty. you guys may be confused why there is another monkey king with better weapon and better armor stop us from finishing the boss. and spend several seconds showing shining gold characters on his stick. We Chinese guys are quite excited seeing this scene because it gets to the most suspenseful part of the story: whether the monkey king who finally becomes the god is the real monkey king who born from the stone? (Is the hero at the end of the journey the same person when he starts the journey?) (are we still us when we grow up/old ?) yes, there are multiple monkey kings and multiple explanations. you can even take them as the "ego", the "id", the "superego" of the monkey king. but it is best to let the game itself to explain it. if you look carefully enough, you will find that the storyteller(at the beginning and end of the trailer) himself is an old "monkey" too. the floating belt behind him indicating that he is a "god". here are some subtle I translated. Hi, I understand some of you are very confused to what you are watching. I'm a chinese Hong Kong aged boy, we all knew Wu Kong and "Journey to the West'", all the scene /posture inside this video recall my memory (especially famous Wu Kong 72 transform) since I was a child, salute to the latest technology. " journey to the West" should be the no.1 chinese/asian ancent story or even literature for many hundred years. You may see the 4 big Kings of the world and also Wu Kong going to the sky palace to fight the army and general of Jade Emperor. Wu Kong is very ambitous and want to replace all the rule of the World, he finally punished by Budda and learnt to be a good boy, then step to the next chapter to bodyguard Tong Juan for "Journey to the west"!

Sun Wu Kong ( Monkey King) was born from a rock that absorb the essence of sun and moon light. The rock was located in flower fruit mountain which is full of monkeys. Soon, he ruled the monkeys and became Monkey King. However, he was arrogant and a troublemaker, a taoist priest brought him to his temple to learn basic manners, wisdom and magic skills. One of the most difficult skill to master was the 72 Transformations (which means 72 magic abilities). 1 of the ability is him able to transform to anything he sees. The other abilities are able to pluck out his hair to summon a clone of himself. 1 strand of hair = 1 clone. He also have the ability to shrink items or enlarge items he held. And able to ride a cloud so he could fly and travel at great distances. With his new found power, he got more arrogant and caused more problems on earth. Soon the ruler of Heavens, the Jade Emperor decideds to invite him to the heavens and gave him a low rank job there so he will not cause trouble on earth. However, Wu Kong was insulted as his job was only to feed horses and caused more problems on heaven. He went to the deep eastern sea and asked the dragon king for weapons. Dragon King offered a few but Wu Kong did not like them. Then Wu Kong saw the Golden Jinghu Staff and wanted it. But Dragon King said if Wu Kong removes this staff, then floods will hit every city and cause unmeasurable damage as this staff was to control the waves of the seas. But Wu Kong still took it and became even more powerful. Becoming more uncontrollable, the Jade Emperor ask one of the deity to prison him in a magic fire cauldron and slowly burn him to death. Yet, Wu Kong did not die from the magic fire and instead mastered a new skill called Fiery Eyes where he could see invisible units and other demons that uses transformation magic. Then he burst out from the fire cauldron and wreck havoc on heavens. He fought 10000 heavenly soldiers singlehandledly and won. Then he declare himself the Great Sage of the Heavens. This is the first arc of "Journey to the West", where the journey itself hasnt even begin. Wu Kong started off as a arrogant and trouble making monkey, to a very powerful being, and then finally learn the wisdom of Compassionate. In the journety to the west, he killed demons or to the extent of innocent humans that he thought were demons. But at the end of the journey, he got enlightended and became compassionate to all life, including demons. So the Jade Emperor grant him buddhahood and a new title called the "Invincible War Buddha"

I wondered if I can see your reacion video of this game yesterday and here it is! You never let me down bro! Sun Wukong`s tale is one of the most well known mythology in China! He has 72 types of transformations and broke into “Di Yu” 地狱 （which literally means hell）， beat the shit out of Yang Wang 阎王（hell ruler，like Hades），erased his name from the "Sheng Si Bu" 生死簿（the death note, not the manga one）to become immortal, then he fought the entire heaven`s army for being treated with discrimination by Jade Emperor, which is shown in the end of the footage where he fought against numbers of heavenly guards on the cloud. At the end of the battle he lost his wager with the buddha and got trapped under the mountain for 500 years until Tang Sanzang 唐三藏 set him free. and that`s where the journey to the west begins.

The trailer is done by a team of 15 people with a core group of ex-Tencent employees that worked on the MMO, Asura based loosely on the world of Journey of the West. That core group left Tencent after the "Skeletal Demon queen" update, which is why at the end of the trailers, the eight Chinese characters says, "After the white bones, (we) return to the West". They put out the trailer in hopes to hire more staff (and possibly) attract investors so that they can complete the games. What is displayed in the trailer is from 2 years of work from these 15 people, very impressive. I hope they get the help they wanted and not too much help in the sense they got taken over by yet another corporate overlord that completely change their vision. Wukong is a spirit stone, he exposed naked in the alternative of sun and moon, experienced the bathing of sun and rains,he got some magic power and turned into a monkey. he is nice friendly with other monkey ,take care of them, he hate evil as one's enemy, but obstinate and unruly. GOD trying to offer amnesty and enlistment to rebels, but only give him a very low position. he got mad, snafued and havoced the whole heaven. no one can fight him. Tathagata （I think this is his name, im not sure, he is the king of Buddha）come over, pressure him under a mountain for 500 years. after 500 years, A hunman monk Go to the west to seek the truth, helped wukong out, Buddha ask wukong to help this monk, protect him，because there is alot monsters in this trip, this monk is a goodness hunman, very week and ez to fool. So this Monk（name Tang xuanzang, people call him monk Tang）become wukong's teacher, teach him Buddhism and control himself. in this trip, they find another 2 people (a pig-Bajie and another monk-Shaseng), they was one of the god (or angel), but they make mistake, so God punish them to go to earth, learn Buddhism from monk Tang, and protect him to go to the west. They took over 17 years, walk over 54000km（about 34000 mile ），go trough 81 different tribulations, see different Country, good or bad people, different god or monsters, finnally arrive at the destination. Found Buddha Tathagata , found the scripture, and all of them became Buddha. then go back to China(they can fly now cause they are Buddha),and teach people the scripture and the truth. thats the whole story of Journey to the west. many culture, anime, games, movies.......inspired by this story, you might know 《The Forbidden Kingdom》，《The Monkey King》《Dragon Ball (only inspire，early story is similar, but later is way different, Son Goku is sun wukong, Oolong is the pig-Bajie, helping Bulma as Monk Tang). in this game, the reason why he put the weapon in his ear, because, in the story, wukong's weapon got superpower, it was a Mythology weapon to keep the ocean steady. it can change size, when he not in combat, he always make it very tiny, and put in his ear. wukong has another skill , is he can change 72 different form. basiclly, anything he saw, he can transfor to him/her/it. thats why he transfiguration in the game. he can freeze people by saying "freeze" we also see that in the game. he can also change his size, be big like a mountain or small like ant. he can invisible，. he can't fly, but he got a magic cloud, can take him everywhere. he can use his hair to clone himself, or make something else, like an apple ,a tree, a cat... anything. but only stay for a short time, and they are fake, can't use ,can't eat, ez to break. he also got 3 “livesaving magic hair”, he only use it once in the story, in that time , he got stock in a weapon， that thing is unbreakble， he use one of the “livesaving magic hair”, to make a drill，drill a little hole on it , change himself very small , then come out. you can't burn him or drown him, cause he is a spirit of nature. thats why Buddha only pressure him under a mountain but can't kill him. A different thing about this game is, is a positive story. This game trying to Interpretation from different perspectives. make it very darkness, make people think , there might be something dark, we don't know. i don't know if you ever watch a movie that make all classic fairy tale dark , Cinderella，Snow White...... all dark. tell you a whole different story. there is another spirit monkey, exactly like him, no one can distinguish them. everything is the same, called "the six ears monkey". in the original story，they find a way to separate them, and killed the fake one. im guessing this game trying to say , they find they wrong Wukong, the one go to the west, became a buddha, is the "six ears", they killed the real Wukong. im jsut guessing, we are playing the real Wukong, who didn't die, when we trying to kill the Werewolf boss, another golden monkey stopped us , thats probablly the "six ears" who already became a buddha. and the old man who telling us this story, probablly is the old Wukong, try to tell us , we worship the wrong monkey, he is reluctantly and sad. then he try to tell us , how he survive in these years, and the "six ears" looking for him , try to kill him,then he can became the "real Wukong". thats why this is black myth. also in the end, the old guy got ribbon floating in the air, that means he is not a hunman. he also humming the theme song of , we can feel his helpless. im just guessing ,so its not a spoiler. lol~ but i know this company, they can make a nice story, a legend story, so i never worry about the story of this game.

This is info. for people Don't about Journey to the west novel 16th century. I know china copied a lot other but not this one. He know all this abilities before all this below: Journey to the west inspired dragon ball if there no Wu Kong there will not be goku with staff and tail. About the shadow clone Wu Kong know this abilities way before made Naruto. Fight giant god like God of War. Wu Kong himself can turn into giant and fighter gaint as well. unless God of War novel made before 16th century idk then you claimed it. other thing you guy said game style similar GOW, GOT, DS, and etc. but He had all this abilities before all this game made.

Agreed. Western world only focus on we are a Communist rule country without knowing the long written history of China, many old mythological story like this was written long time ago, they are awesome title/story for games. I hope this game will bring interest to people to learn about our culture. Being Chinese myself living in the US, I was blew away too, the detail of the game just awesome. At the beginning of the group fight, he charged up his staff 3 times, pay attention to it's shape! Anyway, love your reaction!

In Chinese mythology all heaven and earth there is 4 different legendary monkey. Wu Kong is the stone monkey birth from sun and moon. The other three is a lil different but all four become gods and protector of Buddhist religion. Wu Kong is the one of them of course. Wu Kong is the most powerful of all four. There is one “six ear stone monkey” he’s very close to Wu Kong. Wu Kong biggest weakness is water. All he’s skill base from fire and earth but six ear monkey has no weakness.

it's kind of a tradition thing, a hanging 福 means a stand upside down 福， or a handstand 福， and the pronunciation of "stand upside down" in Chinese is same as "come , arrive". so that simply means "luck has found you", they are using this even nowadays during the lunar spring festival which is the most important holiday, Chinese people will put a red paper has a hanging 福 on it on their doors, for wishing luck for the new year.
