So for anyone who doesn't know, the crown on his head is a gift Avalokitesvara gave to Tang Seng (Wukong's Master in Journey to the West) so he can control/punish Wukong if he's being disobedient (mostly to stop him from killing yaoguai without permission). Iirc, the crown was removed when they sucessfully retrive the Scriptures, but now it returned.

Which is just straight up wrong, other dubs and interpretations of the characters can always be better than the original, both for entertainment value to the story and for fitting the character/plot, which in most cases the English dub does way better than the "original" Japanese in Anime, especially in Anime with European settings and characters like Attack on Titan or Vinland Saga.

To be fair, Wukong has always been portraited as having a high-pitch, obnoxious voice, to highlight his monkey traits. In the OG Journey to the West, Sun Wukong is a deeply flawed character, not meant to be flattering. I think the English VA did an ok job. I don't think chat would've enjoyed the Chinese VA either. There are a lot of western conventions that are simply not there in Chinese literatures.

My partner is Chinese and seeing her get hyped from this intro and saying the Chinese names of the deities and the crown that sealed wukong with so much happiness like she was reliving a piece of her childhood was unreal. She was a bit disappointed the game deviated from the original story of journey to the west but it was nice anyways to know that a Chinese game company designed the game in a way that wasn't compromised by the west's brainwashed narratives. When I first came to China she showed me journey to the west and king fu hustle with her friends. It was a special memory and I love wukong for it, if this game was made by anyone else it would have been an assassin's creed situation

Guys, for ppl who don't understand the context: the first scene you have played is the real wukong. (The one in novel "journey to the west" and he finally accomplish the task with his peers and became one of the Buddha) the background of this game is happening after that, wukong back to his mountain and for some reason, the world (the God court and Buddha world, as well as the human world) was controlled by the demon and most of gods and Buddha were demonized (you will see a lot of boss are demonized Buddha and god). The real wukong realized that and tried to figure out the reason and you see the first scene. And looks like he failed and dead. Then, the main character you are playing after is not wukong, it's a similar kind of intelligent monkey to the real wukong, and he's trying to figure out the real reason of this demonized world (same as real wukong). And you will fight 81 bosses in this new journey and at the end find out what's going on. Even me don't know what the real ending of this story is.

Some intro, the Court means the Imperial Heavnly Court, kind of a goverment that tried to tie WoKong to their service, he finished the Journey to the West, and the Court still want him to do their bidding since his power is too strong to be left along. small lore recap here, Wukong ultimately lost to Erlang here because of the golden circlet/restraining headband that reappeared on his head. It was originally placed onto him by buddha to help keep him in check on the journey to the west where if he acted out or misbehaved the priest guy he was protecting could chant an incantation causing the headband to tighten causing wukong extreme pain. He ultimately did complete his duty and finished the journey so this all took place after that, he was granted enlightenment and buddhahood and the restraining headband removed. Strange how it materialized on his head now almost as if Buddha himself cast down divine intervention which allowed Erlang to strike him down.
