Not really, Erlang Shen and Sun Wukong are friends. Even after he burned down Sun Wukong’s house and made the flower fruit mountain monkies homeless. They even spent a chapters afterwards killing a demon together. The Celestial Host sucks which I'd why Erlang Shen isn't one of them. He does freelance stuff from heaven for pay because he also doesn't like them much. Tldr: Erlang Shen would never be a Heaven shill. He hates his uncle to much. Him and Monkey King are bros! 😭

Wukong rages against the 100,000 soldiers and Generals of Heaven, is defeated by Erleng Shen, and is left imprisoned on the mountain to think about his actions until Xuanzang frees him and he pledges his service to him. Unless I have my chronology wrong. It HAS been a while since I've read that series.

This game is set after Journey to the West, and knowing the story actually helps clear some things up that Wukong in this cutscene. Particularly when Wukong says "except for that pig, you tell the tallest tales", he is referencing 豬八戒 Zhu Bajie, one of the disciples that Wukong travelled alongside who was notorious for lying and his rebellious behaviour towards the main character of JttW - Tang Sanzang - and Wukong himself. This just really shows how well educated the writers and Devs were and how exceptionally detailed this game can be, referencing various people or events that the average person would be oblivious to.

If you can't understand the opening CG, you can think of it as:The Heavenly Court is like the CIA, and the monkey used to be a former mob boss. His mission to "go legit" involves delivering an important NPC to pick up some crucial items. After the job's done, they promise the monkey a spot in the system, but along the way, the monkey takes out quite a few of his old mob buddies. In the end, the monkey decides he doesn't want the spot anymore and just wants to retire to the mountains. The CIA, though, plans to kill him to tie up loose ends.

The original Wukong is physically dead but his spirit lives while scattered into 6 relics. The protagonist, the destined one or who you are playing, is revisiting those important locations and ppl once showed up in the Journey to the West. You are trying to collect all relics so as to revive Wukong, but as far as I know, finally you inherit Wukong’s spirit and become his spiritually reincarnated version.
